He succeeded Jill Popelka, who stepped down at the end of January; chairman Charles Goodman served as interim CEO during the gap. Darktrace’s leadership page now lists Jennings in the role.
When did Ed Jennings become Darktrace CEO?
Darktrace announced Jennings’s appointment on March 9, 2026, and said he would join on March 23. The distinction matters: the announcement date was not his start date. Popelka had left the CEO role at the end of January, and Goodman, the board chairman, was interim CEO until Jennings joined. Darktrace’s announcement describes Jennings as both president and chief executive officer.
As of August 18, 2026, the company’s leadership page lists him as President and CEO. That page also lists Marcus Fowler as CEO of Darktrace Federal, a separate role.
Who is Ed Jennings?
Jennings’s most recent role before Darktrace was CEO of Quickbase, a cloud-based work-management platform. Before that, he was chief operating officer at cybersecurity company Mimecast. Darktrace says he helped lead Mimecast’s IPO and international expansion. Those descriptions of his contributions come from Darktrace’s appointment announcement, rather than an independent assessment.

Earlier in his career, Jennings held commercial and go-to-market roles at Veracode, ADP, Copanion, and PTC. Darktrace’s executive biography says he graduated from Boston College and earned an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
Why did Darktrace select him?
Darktrace’s stated rationale centers on Jennings’s experience in cybersecurity and enterprise software, particularly scaling businesses and building teams. Chairman Charles Goodman described him as a veteran technology leader with experience scaling cybersecurity and software companies and building high-trust, high-performance teams. These are the board’s characterizations of Jennings, not independently verified performance findings.
The combination of roles suggests a profile weighted toward commercial execution and growth: Jennings has led a software company and held an operating role at a cybersecurity vendor. That background is relevant to Darktrace’s competitive position, but it does not establish that he will change the company’s products, sales model, or priorities.
What priorities has Jennings stated?
In a public statement about joining Darktrace, Jennings said he wanted to build a high-trust, high-performance team, sharpen the company’s voice in a crowded cybersecurity market, and reaccelerate topline growth. He also emphasized positioning the business for threats associated with AI and what he called the agentic-AI era. These are stated ambitions; they are not evidence that growth has accelerated or that Darktrace’s positioning has already changed. Jennings’s statement sets out those aims.
What is Darktrace’s business context?
Darktrace describes its business as AI-focused cybersecurity. Its platform spans network, cloud, and email security; operational technology; threat detection and autonomous response; and tools for security operations and analyst support. The company says it was founded in 2013, has more than 2,300 employees, and serves nearly 10,000 customers. Those are company-provided, time-sensitive figures, not independently validated counts.
Darktrace is listed in Thoma Bravo’s portfolio, which identifies 2024 as the investment year. That establishes the ownership context, but does not show that the investment firm directed the CEO selection or any particular operating decision. Thoma Bravo’s portfolio page lists the company and investment year.

What the leadership change does—and does not—signal
Jennings brings both broader enterprise-software experience and a prior senior role at a cybersecurity company. His stated emphasis on growth and market positioning makes commercial execution an important area to watch as Darktrace competes in a crowded AI-security market. Popelka’s departure after a relatively short tenure also makes continuity and strategic direction reasonable questions for customers, employees, and investors.
The appointment materials do not establish whether Jennings will alter the product roadmap, pricing, sales channels, geographic focus, or acquisition strategy. They also do not disclose specific revenue, margin, customer-growth, or retention targets, or explain Popelka’s departure beyond saying she stepped down. As a result, the appointment alone is not proof of a strategic pivot or a response to financial performance.
