SambaNova announced a $676 million Series D on April 13, 2021, at a reported $5.1 billion valuation. The financing backed its plan to sell enterprises an integrated AI system—proprietary hardware, software and managed access—rather than just a chip. That valuation is historical: SambaNova announced a first close of a $1 billion Series F at an $11 billion post-money valuation on July 8, 2026.
What SambaNova raised in 2021
The April 2021 round was led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2. New investors included Temasek and Singapore’s Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC); participating backers named in the coverage included BlackRock, Intel Capital, GV, Walden International and WRVI. SambaNova said it had raised more than $1 billion in total by then, a cumulative figure reported as “more than” rather than an exact total. TechCrunch’s April 13, 2021 report put the company’s founding in 2017 and identified founders Rodrigo Liang, Kunle Olukotun and Chris Ré.
The $676 million was the financing amount; $5.1 billion was the reported valuation, not cash paid to buy the company. For the valuation, the round represented investors’ view of SambaNova’s prospects—not evidence by itself that the business had broad customer adoption or proven commercial scale.
What the company was building
DataScale: an integrated AI system
SambaNova was not simply a software company or a chip vendor. Its DataScale platform combined proprietary AI hardware with software designed around a dataflow architecture, intended to move data efficiently through AI workloads. The software was designed to work with mainstream machine-learning frameworks, including PyTorch and TensorFlow. The proposition was a vertically integrated system, not a standalone accelerator sale.

Dataflow-as-a-Service: access without running all the infrastructure
With Dataflow-as-a-Service, enterprises could access SambaNova’s AI capabilities on demand through a subscription rather than buying, configuring and maintaining all of the underlying infrastructure themselves. The commercial shift was from selling only racks or chips toward selling a managed capability. It could reduce lower-level infrastructure work and the number of specialists needed for those operations; it did not eliminate the need for data scientists, application teams or domain expertise.
Why enterprises might have wanted that model
For a company whose core business was not technology, moving AI from experiments into production could mean hiring scarce specialists, selecting hardware, integrating software, deploying models, maintaining systems and updating them over time. Organizations also had to decide how to use proprietary data and handle performance, security and governance. SambaNova’s pitch was to make AI adoption more like buying a service than undertaking a multiyear infrastructure project.
The case was especially relevant to businesses with substantial proprietary datasets or specialized industry needs. TechCrunch’s 2021 coverage cited high-resolution medical and other imaging, custom language models for sectors such as finance, and recommendation systems as potential applications. It also mentioned research workloads at Argonne National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Those examples describe the use cases reported at the time; they do not establish current commercial scale or broad customer adoption.

How the 2021 strategy fit into the market
The competitors named in the 2021 coverage included Nvidia, Cerebras Systems and Graphcore. But an enterprise choosing how to run AI was not necessarily choosing only between accelerator chips. It could rent compute from a cloud provider, use a managed model API, buy private Nvidia-based systems, consider specialized hardware, or build around custom cloud silicon. Google and Intel could also be relevant as partners, infrastructure providers or routes to enterprise customers.

Buyers weigh time to production, existing software compatibility, geographic availability, data control, model access, total cost, service commitments and how easily they can move workloads later. An integrated provider may simplify procurement and operations, but a proprietary stack can increase dependence on one vendor. A service can reduce infrastructure work without making model selection, application design or data governance disappear.
How SambaNova’s strategy looks in 2026
On July 8, 2026, SambaNova announced the first close of a $1 billion Series F at an $11 billion post-money valuation, led by General Atlantic, with significant investment from Seligman Ventures and T. Rowe Price Associates. This is the company’s latest financing and valuation stated in the announcement; it does not replace the historical facts of the 2021 Series D.

The company’s current positioning emphasizes production AI inference—running trained models to answer requests—alongside enterprise deployment, rather than the broader enterprise AI adoption pitch of 2021. Its product lineup spans API-based cloud access, dedicated infrastructure, managed services and deployment management. The through-line is still an integrated hardware-and-software offering intended to spare customers from assembling every layer themselves.
SambaCloud
SambaCloud provides cloud inference access to large open-source models, including Llama, DeepSeek and Qwen, and offers OpenAI-compatible endpoints. The company lists integrations including Hugging Face, CrewAI, Cline and AWS. For developers, the plans page lists $5 in free API credits with no credit card required and pay-as-you-go token usage; larger enterprise usage is subscription-priced through sales. These are current company-listed plan terms, not a comparison of total costs across providers.

SambaStack combines SambaNova hardware and software in dedicated AI infrastructure that can be deployed on premises or in a dedicated cloud environment. It is aimed at organizations seeking more control than a standard API, but a dedicated deployment brings procurement and capacity-planning considerations.

SambaManaged is designed for data centers, telecom providers and enterprises that want to operate a managed inference service on their own infrastructure. It is distinct from an API product for application developers: its pitch is to help an organization or infrastructure operator run an inference cloud.

SambaNova may merit evaluation when an organization needs dedicated or controlled inference infrastructure, wants to run open models, has data-sovereignty or air-gapped requirements, or prefers one supplier for hardware, serving software and support. Sustained workloads may also justify examining dedicated infrastructure rather than relying only on sporadic rented compute. These are reasons to assess fit, not proof that SambaNova will be cheaper or faster for a particular workload.

Validate performance and cost with the models, traffic patterns and service levels the application needs; broad claims such as “fastest” or “more efficient” are not universal conclusions.
- Check ecosystem fit. Teams invested in Nvidia CUDA should account for migration, tuning and developer-tooling costs before choosing another accelerator stack.
- Confirm deployment details. Ask about supported models, fine-tuning, observability, regional availability, security documentation, SLAs and deployment timelines. SambaNova describes cloud, on-premises, hybrid and air-gapped options and lists procurement through AWS Marketplace, direct purchase or partners on its enterprise solutions page.
- Understand commercial and exit terms. Enterprise pricing is not listed publicly on the plans page; larger buyers must contact sales. Evaluate capacity commitments, support arrangements and portability before committing to a proprietary stack.
A small team with uncertain or low usage may find a general-purpose cloud or managed model API easier to start with. An organization already standardized on a hyperscaler may value its existing procurement relationship and broad service ecosystem. The right comparison depends on control, operating responsibility, workload economics and the cost of switching—not only hardware specifications.
What the funding does—and does not—show
The 2021 round showed substantial investor commitment to the idea that enterprises would pay for an integrated way to deploy AI. It did not, on its own, establish revenue, utilization, broad customer traction or the performance of the system against alternatives. The public 2021 coverage identified research labs and potential use cases, but did not provide a comprehensive customer list or commercial operating metrics. Likewise, the later valuation is a financing announcement, not a measure of customer outcomes or a guarantee of future performance.
