For the Indian feature-phone shortlist published in January 2023, Nokia offered options from a basic calls-and-texts handset to music phones and a senior-friendly flip. But “Nokia dominates” is a headline, not a proven market-share finding. The right choice depends on what you need, where you live, and whether the exact model works on your carrier. These are historical 2023 recommendations, not a current-price guide; HMD’s catalog now includes newer Nokia- and HMD-branded phones (HMD phone catalog).
Quick picks: Nokia 105 (2022) for basic calls and texts; Nokia 110 4G for an inexpensive 4G upgrade; Nokia 225 4G for a better-equipped candy bar; Nokia 5310 or 5710 XpressAudio for music; Nokia 2660 Flip for large physical controls; and Nokia 2780 Flip as a US-oriented bridge phone with more internet features.

What counts as a feature phone?
A feature phone puts calls and SMS first, typically with a physical keypad, small display and limited software. Some add 4G voice service, a basic browser, music playback, camera, radio or selected apps. “Feature phone” does not necessarily mean offline: a KaiOS phone such as the Nokia 2780 Flip offers more internet functions than a simple S30+-style handset.
These devices can work well as inexpensive secondary phones, emergency handsets, low-distraction phones or straightforward calling devices. They are usually a poor fit for anyone who depends on smartphone apps, frequent group messaging, capable web browsing or a modern camera.

2023 shortlist at a glance
The prices below are those reported for India in the original article, published January 6, 2023. They are historical figures, not current prices. Specifications and availability can differ by market and model generation.

|---|---|---|---|---|

Best basic phone: Nokia 105 (2022)
The 105 is the straightforward choice if the job is calls, SMS, FM radio and a torch, rather than apps or internet access. The 2022 version described in the January 2023 article has a 1.77-inch display, an island-style keypad, Snake, wireless FM radio, and stated capacity for up to 2,000 contacts and 500 SMS messages.
Keep the model year in view. HMD’s page for the 2023 Nokia 105 claims up to 12 hours of talk time and up to 22 days of standby, and says its battery is 25% larger than its predecessor. Those are manufacturer figures for that version, not independent measurements or guarantees for the 2022 model (HMD Nokia 105 product information). The 105 is best treated as a simple backup or calling phone, not a smartphone substitute.
Best inexpensive 4G upgrade: Nokia 110 4G
The 110 4G adds a stronger set of everyday extras: 4G HD voice calling, a rear camera, MP3 playback, microSD support, Bluetooth, FM radio, a torch, Opera Mini and preloaded games. HMD lists a 1,450mAh battery for its 2023 model. HMD also cautions that HD calling depends on the operator and supported network (HMD Nokia 110 4G product information).
Choose it over the basic 105 if 4G calling, Bluetooth or music playback matter. Before buying, check the exact regional model’s LTE bands and VoLTE support with your carrier: a 4G label alone does not establish that calls will work on a particular network. The original article’s ₹1,699 price applied to the Nokia 110, while its ₹2,799 price applied to the 110 4G; do not confuse the two versions.
Best all-round candy bar: Nokia 225 4G
The 225 4G is the more fully equipped candy-bar option in the original list. The article describes a 2.4-inch display, Unisoc USM9117 chipset, 64MB RAM, 128MB internal storage, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 5.0, dual SIM, a 0.3MP camera, MP3 playback, internet access and a 1,150mAh battery. Its reported India price was ₹3,749 in January 2023.
That specification list belongs to the version covered by the article, not automatically to every later 225. HMD’s current catalog lists a Nokia 225 4G (2024), so compare the exact year and regional model before relying on an older listing. The 225 is a better fit than an entry-level handset when you want a larger screen and more connectivity, but “internet access” here should not be mistaken for smartphone-grade browsing or apps.
Best for music: Nokia 5310 and 5710 XpressAudio
Nokia 5310: physical music controls
The Nokia 5310 is the simpler music-first option. The 2023 shortlist describes dedicated music buttons, FM radio, MP3 playback, dual front-facing speakers, a 2.4-inch curved display and a 1,200mAh battery; its reported India price was ₹3,649. It suits local audio files and radio better than a buyer who expects Spotify or YouTube Music.

The 5710’s distinctive feature is a pair of wireless earbuds stored beneath a rear slider, where they can be charged. HMD’s launch material also describes dedicated audio controls and loud dual speakers (HMD announcement for the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio and related phones). The original article reported an India price of ₹4,999.
This is the more unusual music device, but its appeal depends on wanting physical audio hardware. The earbuds are part of the design, so losing or damaging them diminishes one of the main reasons to choose it. For either phone, check whether your music files, memory-card needs and preferred headphones fit the exact version; neither should be assumed to offer modern streaming apps.
Best senior-friendly flip: Nokia 2660 Flip
The 2660 Flip pairs a 2.8-inch internal display with a 1.77-inch external display. The original article lists a 0.3MP camera with LED flash, dual SIM, 4G LTE, FM radio, Bluetooth, MP3 playback, microSD support and a removable 1,450mAh battery. HMD positions the design around large buttons, simplified calling, hearing-aid compatibility and an emergency button. Its press material says the emergency feature can notify five contacts; setup and behaviour should be checked in the local version’s user guide (HMD announcement).

Large buttons and a flip-to-answer design make the 2660 a sensible candidate for someone who prefers simple physical controls. They do not make it universally suitable: check the person’s needs for key size, text size, speaker clarity, hearing-aid compatibility and charging. HMD currently sells the basic design under the HMD name as the HMD 2660 Flip 4G (HMD 2660 Flip 4G product information).
If an emergency button matters, verify that it exists on the exact regional version, configure contacts, and make sure the user knows how it works. It cannot compensate for lack of network coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best US-oriented bridge phone: Nokia 2780 Flip
The 2780 Flip is a different proposition from a simple S30+-style phone. A 2023 review describes it as a US-exclusive model with KaiOS, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, USB-C and a 5MP camera. The review found the interface less simple and the construction less substantial than the 2660, and reported that WhatsApp was not supported at the time (NokiaMob’s 2023 Nokia 2780 Flip review).
It is worth considering if you want to step away from a touchscreen smartphone but still need limited internet features. It is not the choice for a strict distraction barrier, and the review’s US-market context does not establish compatibility elsewhere. Check the current carrier’s model support before purchasing.
S30+ or KaiOS: simplicity versus a smartphone bridge
The operating system is a better guide to the phone’s role than the Nokia name. A simple S30+-style phone is designed around calls, texts and built-in tools; a KaiOS phone can add a browser, hotspot or selected apps. More capability can help when you need it, but it also means the handset is less of a hard break from online distractions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For a stricter digital detox: look at basic models such as the Nokia 105 or a simple flip phone such as the 2660, after checking the exact model’s functions.
- For a limited-internet bridge: consider a KaiOS device such as the 2780 only if its supported features and carrier fit meet your needs.
- For messaging apps: verify support for the exact model, software version and country before buying. App availability changes over time; the 2023 2780 review’s WhatsApp finding is time-specific, not a statement about every Nokia phone.
What “long battery life” means in practice
Standby and talk-time claims are not equivalent to ordinary use. HMD’s up-to-22-days standby and up-to-12-hours talk-time figures apply to its 2023 Nokia 105 product information and are manufacturer claims. In a Nokia 2780 review, the manufacturer’s claimed figures were reported as up to 18 days standby and about seven hours of talk time; the reviewer observed roughly five to six days with light use and around two days with heavy 4G use. Those are observations for that review’s use, not universal expectations (NokiaMob review).
Runtime can fall with weak 4G signal, VoLTE calls, browsing, Bluetooth, music playback, dual-SIM use and an aged battery. Treat “up to” as a best-case manufacturer claim, not a promise about the time between your charges.
Check compatibility before buying
Network mismatch can turn an inexpensive phone into a poor purchase. Before paying, use this checklist for the exact handset and your location:
- Identify the full model and generation. “Nokia 105,” “110,” “225” and “2660” each cover multiple versions. Match the listing to the intended market.
- Check LTE bands and VoLTE. Ask the carrier whether the phone supports its bands and voice configuration, not merely whether the device says “4G.”
- Confirm carrier approval and lock status. Verify that the carrier accepts the model and that the phone is unlocked if you plan to use another SIM.
- Check SIM configuration and size. Confirm single- or dual-SIM behaviour and the required SIM format for your carrier.
- Confirm the features you actually need. Check Wi-Fi, hotspot, app support, microSD limits, Bluetooth and charging method on the exact regional specification.
- Assess old-stock or used condition. In 2026, a 2023 model may be used, refurbished, imported or old stock. Check battery condition, included charger, warranty, regional software and accessory compatibility.
For music playback or camera storage, some models need a separately purchased microSD card; HMD’s Nokia 110 4G information identifies microSD support (HMD Nokia 110 4G product information). The 2660 charging cradle is also sold separately according to HMD’s announcement. Verify card capacity and accessory compatibility against the exact model rather than assuming all versions support the same accessories.
Which one should you choose?
- Cheapest calls-and-texts phone in the 2023 India shortlist: Nokia 105 (2022).
- Low-cost 4G calling and music: Nokia 110 4G, if your carrier supports the exact variant.
- More capable candy-bar design: Nokia 225 4G, after checking that the listing is not a different-generation model.
- Physical music controls: Nokia 5310; choose the 5710 XpressAudio if its integrated earbuds are a meaningful benefit.
- Large-button flip design: Nokia 2660 Flip or its HMD-branded successor, subject to local compatibility and accessibility checks.
- US-oriented internet-capable flip: Nokia 2780 Flip, for a limited smartphone bridge rather than a strict detox.
None of these is automatically a safe primary-phone replacement. Decide first whether you can live without your required apps, fast typing, capable browsing and camera, then verify network support and the exact generation. For the latest Nokia and HMD product lineup, consult HMD’s current phone catalog.
