The mass Apple-related billing incident in Hungary happened on June 26, 2024—not as a confirmed Apple Pay hack, but as a technical failure that led to unauthorized card debits. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) reported about 780,000 transactions worth more than HUF 2 billion and said affected customers should receive full reimbursement. If a June 2024 debit was never refunded, the MNB’s advice was to complain to your bank.
What happened in Hungary?
The MNB said a technical fault involving Apple and its international card-acceptance partner triggered unauthorized Apple-related card debits on June 26, 2024, primarily between 18:00 and 20:00. It reported roughly 780,000 transactions totaling more than HUF 2 billion. The MNB’s assessment was that the incident resulted from a technical error, not a cyberattack. These findings describe that specific incident; they do not establish that every unfamiliar Apple charge is part of it. MNB statement on the incident

The MNB said the unauthorized transactions should be reimbursed in full. It later reported that compensation was progressing and told customers still missing money to file a complaint with their bank. That direction applies to people affected by the documented Hungarian incident, not automatically to every disputed Apple-related charge. MNB reimbursement statement · MNB follow-up on compensation
Some customers received further notifications on June 28. The MNB cautioned that these did not necessarily indicate a new incident; they could concern alerts about the earlier incorrect debits. MNB statement on customer notifications

Apple Pay, Apple billing, or something else?
An Apple-related descriptor on a bank statement does not, by itself, show that someone used Apple Pay. Apple Pay is the Wallet-based payment method; App Store and Apple service billing can cover apps, subscriptions, iCloud, Apple Music, and other purchases. A bank’s descriptor may not identify the product or payment flow clearly, so compare the bank’s transaction details with your Apple purchase history. The card issuer has the authoritative full transaction record. Apple guidance on Apple Pay transaction history
| What you see | What it may mean | Where to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Apple or App Store charge | An app, subscription, iCloud, Apple Music, or another Apple service; it may also be a charge made by someone in a family group. | Apple purchase history and subscriptions |
| Wallet or Apple Pay transaction | A payment made with a card stored in Wallet; the bank can confirm how it was processed. | Your bank app and Wallet |
| Repeated pending entries | Potentially duplicate authorizations or reservations, rather than multiple completed debits. | Ask your bank whether each item is pending or completed |
| Unexpected refund text, call, or email | Potential impersonation or phishing, especially if it demands a code, password, or urgent action. | Do not use its links or phone number; contact the bank independently |
Apple Pay uses a device-specific card number that differs from the physical card number. An unfamiliar last four digits alone therefore do not prove that a card was stolen. Apple guidance on Apple Pay card numbers

How to check an unfamiliar Apple charge
Check Apple purchases and subscriptions
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
- Review the purchase list and search by amount if you know the amount but not what it bought.
- Check active subscriptions, iCloud, Apple Music, and Family Sharing. A household member’s purchase or a family-billed subscription can look unfamiliar on your card statement.
Check Wallet and the bank record
- On iPhone, open Wallet, tap the relevant card, then review and tap the transaction for more details.
- Compare the entry with your bank app. Apple notes that Wallet history may not be available in every country and may include physical-card activity as well as Apple Pay activity, depending on the issuer; the issuer’s records are the best source for the full transaction record. Apple Pay transaction-history guidance
- Ask the bank whether the item is pending, completed, reversed, duplicated, or being processed as an unauthorized transaction.
What to do if you did not authorize the charge
- Contact your bank through its official app or the number on your card. Ask it to confirm the status and record the dispute as an unauthorized transaction where appropriate. For card-payment disputes, the issuer handles the payment investigation.
- Freeze the card if needed. If more unexpected transactions are appearing, temporarily freeze it or follow the bank’s advice about blocking or replacing it.
- Save the evidence. Keep screenshots showing the date, time, amount, descriptor, and status, along with bank messages and any refund or reversal entry.
- Check whether money was actually taken. A pending authorization may disappear or be corrected; distinguish it from a completed debit before treating it as a final withdrawal.
- For an unresolved June 2024 incident refund, complain to the bank. This was the MNB’s stated next step for customers who had not received reimbursement. MNB advice for unresolved reimbursements
Contact Apple as well if the charge appears in purchase history or you need to review an Apple Account or subscription. Apple’s records and the bank’s payment dispute serve different purposes; changing an Apple Account password does not itself reverse a card debit.
If you suspect your Apple Account or Apple Pay was compromised
- Change your Apple Account password and review the devices signed in to the account.
- Remove devices or payment methods you do not recognize, and enable two-factor authentication if it is not already on.
- Contact the card issuer separately about the transaction; ask whether the card should be frozen or replaced.
Do not assume an Apple Account problem from the statement descriptor alone. The bank can investigate the transaction type, while Apple can help with account access and Apple-service purchase records.

Watch for scams posing as Apple or the bank
Scammers may exploit public concern about Apple Pay by claiming that an account is compromised or that they can arrange a refund. Apple warns about impersonation attempts that use urgency and pressure. Apple guidance on scams and impersonation
- Do not click dispute or refund links in unsolicited messages.
- Never share a bank login, one-time code, card security code, or Apple password with a caller or message sender.
- Do not install remote-access software at someone’s request.
- Call the bank using the number printed on the card or shown in its official app, and find Apple Support independently rather than using contact details in an unexpected message.
Why October 2024 reports were different
A separate issue around September 30–October 1, 2024 involved duplicate Apple App Store reservation notifications. The MNB later said domestic bank customers had not suffered financial harm from that episode; it was not the June mass unauthorized-debit incident. The distinction matters because repeated pending entries are not necessarily repeated completed charges.
