The Trump administration reportedly disbanded DOGE’s centralized operation in November 2025. Its formal sunset came later, on July 4, 2026, and applied specifically to the U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization—not automatically to every agency team or the broader DOGE effort.
What happened to DOGE, and when?
DOGE’s status changed in stages. The November 2025 report concerned the operation of the centralized unit; the July 2026 date was the sunset set for one specific organization in the executive order. Those events are related, but they are not interchangeable.

The executive order states: “The U.S. DOGE Service Temporary Organization shall terminate on July 4, 2026.” That language identifies the organization with a fixed end date; it does not say every agency DOGE team or the broader DOGE entity must end on the same date.
Did Trump disband DOGE?
In the operational sense described by TechCrunch in November 2025, the administration had disbanded the centralized DOGE unit. In the legal sense, the temporary organization established within USDS reached its scheduled termination date on July 4, 2026. GAO explicitly cautioned that the executive order did not itself terminate the broader DOGE entity.

These distinctions matter because the January 2025 order also directed agencies to create their own DOGE teams. The available GAO findings do not establish the full present-day staffing or activities of every such team after the temporary organization’s sunset. A centralized unit’s reported breakup and the formal end of one organization therefore do not, by themselves, show that all DOGE-related work across government stopped.
In the 2025 TechCrunch account, Kupor said that although the centralized unit “doesn’t exist,” “the principles of DOGE remain alive and well: de-regulation; eliminating fraud, waste and abuse; re-shaping the federal workforce; making efficiency a first-class citizen.” Those were Kupor’s remarks at that time, not proof of which specific programs or teams continued afterward.

Did DOGE actually save money?
GAO’s review of the Wall of Receipts distinguishes amounts DOGE reported from money independently shown to have been saved. The site listed $110.34 billion across contracts, grants, and leases as of July 7, 2026, covering 29,591 award entries. GAO identified transparency and reliability limitations in how the amounts were presented; the listed total is not a GAO-verified measure of realized net savings.

GAO’s DHS example shows why a projected reduction in potential spending is different from cash saved. The department’s $10.5 billion estimate represented maximum potential obligations. GAO concluded DHS was unlikely to realize most of that projection because some services could still be obtained through other contracts. GAO also found that 95 percent of the estimated potential cost avoidance was associated with 30 terminated indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts.

For a household, the practical takeaway is not that DOGE’s reported totals translate into a specific tax reduction or a direct personal-finance benefit. The figures describe reported estimates and contract actions; the cited reviews do not establish a corresponding change in an individual’s taxes, benefits, or take-home pay.
How many people worked for DOGE?
GAO identified 206 DOGE personnel who held positions in the Executive Office of the President (EOP) from January 20, 2025, through January 31, 2026. That defined population spanned USDS, the White House Office, and the Office of Management and Budget, and included employees, detailees, and volunteers who met GAO’s criteria. It is a scoped EOP count, not a total headcount for everyone who participated in DOGE work across federal agencies.

- At least 128 of the 206 had separated from EOP positions by January 31, 2026.
- EOP did not provide GAO access to requested training records and financial disclosures, so GAO could not determine all personnel who received training or filed disclosures.
The records limitation is not a finding that every affected person failed to complete training or file a required disclosure. It means GAO could not determine the full extent of those activities from the records it was given.

GAO’s September 2026 review examined DOGE team access at six agencies: the Department of Education, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and Small Business Administration (SBA). It found gaps in the evidence available to verify certain safeguards, including training, signed rules of behavior, background checks, and access controls.

NOAA, SBA, and VA did not respond to GAO’s requests for information about whether they had implemented controls. GAO said it could not assure Congress and the public that all six agencies had implemented controls to ensure DOGE team members appropriately secured information without the requested information. Missing documentation or an unanswered request does not, by itself, prove a control was absent; the finding is about what GAO could verify in this review, not every agency or every user.
What is known about DOGE after Elon Musk left?
The cited record supports a distinction between the end of the centralized operation reported in November 2025, the July 2026 sunset of the temporary organization, and possible activity by agency teams. It does not provide a complete inventory of DOGE participants across government or establish every team’s status after the sunset. The Wall of Receipts remaining online is not evidence of continuing management, and reported savings on the site should be treated as estimates rather than verified net savings.
