Parametrix estimated that the July 19, 2024 CrowdStrike outage would cause $5.4 billion in direct financial losses across U.S. Fortune 500 companies, excluding Microsoft. Its headline figure was a weighted average of $44 million per Fortune 500 company. Both figures were modeled estimates published July 24, 2024—not audited totals of losses ultimately incurred.
What the $44 million estimate measures
Parametrix estimated that 125 Fortune 500 corporations—one quarter of the list—were affected. Its $5.4 billion figure covers estimated direct financial losses for U.S. Fortune 500 companies and explicitly excludes Microsoft. The $44 million figure is a weighted average per Fortune 500 company, not a bill paid by every company or a measured average of only those affected.
Axios reported a separate figure: an average estimated loss of $43.6 million per affected company. That is not precisely the same measure as Parametrix’s $44 million weighted average across Fortune 500 companies. Axios’s contemporaneous report summarized the estimate; Parametrix’s July 24, 2024 analysis is the primary source for its methodology and figures.
Parametrix said its analysis drew on cloud-service performance data and monitoring of technology businesses, including more than 54 billion data points and direct monitoring of 6,000 technology businesses. Those are the firm’s descriptions of its analysis, not an independently audited census of company losses.

Why the outage affected companies
On July 19, 2024, a CrowdStrike software update caused Microsoft Windows operating systems to crash, disrupting operations including commercial flights and hospital care. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) describes the cause as human error, not a cyberattack. The incident affected organizations well beyond the Fortune 500; Parametrix’s financial estimate, however, is limited to the U.S. Fortune 500 scope described above.
A 2025 U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security hearing record referred to 8.5 million devices worldwide. That hearing statement provides context for the incident’s reach; it was not the basis for Parametrix’s financial calculation. The hearing record also contains members’ statements, which should be distinguished from independent incident findings.

Which industries faced the largest estimated losses?
Parametrix’s figures show that the estimated burden varied sharply by sector. Healthcare and banking had the largest aggregate losses in its breakdown, while all six Fortune 500 airlines were affected.
| Sector or measure | Parametrix’s 2024 estimate |
|---|---|
| Healthcare | $1.938 billion in estimated direct losses |
| Banking | $1.149 billion in estimated direct losses |
| Fortune 500 airlines | About $860 million across six airlines; 100% were affected |
| Manufacturing | $36 million in estimated losses across 130 companies |
| Retailers and wholesalers | 43% suffered direct costs |
| Healthcare and banking firms | About three quarters of firms in each sector suffered direct costs |
The company-level impact rates and sector totals are estimates from Parametrix, not audited accounting results. Manufacturing’s comparatively small estimated loss should not be read as evidence that every manufacturer experienced little disruption; the figure aggregates the 130 companies in the report.

- USB-C or tap via NFC for easy authentication on any compatible device. No drivers needed; optional Kensington software available for advanced management features.
- Works across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, ChromeOS, and supports Passkeys and Apple ID.
- Slim, keychain-ready form for easy carry and on-the-go authentication
- IP68-rated for dependable performance
- FIDO CTAP 2.1 for enhanced security features (e.g. resident credentials, Passkey support) and backwards compatibility with CTAP 2. FIDO2 L2 certified security for phishing resistant protection against identity theft and unauthorized access.
How much of the estimated loss might insurance cover?
Parametrix estimated that cyber insurance might cover 10% to 20% of the modeled loss. The firm attributed the limited share to large retentions and policy limits relative to potential outage losses. This is an estimate of the portion that might be insured, not a report of claims paid or a prediction for any particular company’s policy.

The incident exposed the financial reach of a disruption involving widely used software. Parametrix’s co-founder and CEO, Jonatan Hatzor, said: “Our analysis of the CrowdStrike outage shows not only the possible extent of a systemic cyber loss event, but also its boundaries.”

GAO’s recommendations point to practical resilience work: manage supply-chain risk, test and approve software changes before deployment, exercise contingency plans, and share cybersecurity information promptly. GAO notes that testing and approving new or modified systems and software—including critical security patches—helps ensure systems operate as intended and that unauthorized changes are not introduced. These measures can reduce risk and improve response; no single control guarantees prevention.
- Manage software supply-chain risk: understand the providers and software components an organization depends on, and assess how disruption could affect critical operations.
- Test and approve changes: establish a process for validating new or modified software before implementation, including security patches.
- Exercise contingency plans: make sure teams can detect disruption, mitigate its effects, and recover services, rather than relying on an untested plan.
- Share timely information: coordinate relevant cybersecurity information so organizations can respond with better awareness of emerging incidents.
GAO also noted that traditional industries relying on physical computers experienced longer recovery times in Parametrix’s analysis, while cloud-based systems were characterized as more resilient and faster to recover. That is an observation from this report, not a universal rule that cloud systems always recover faster. GAO’s broader cybersecurity context—not specific to this outage—is that 528 of 1,624 public-report recommendations made since 2010 across four major cybersecurity challenge areas remained unimplemented as of September 2024.

In a September 24, 2025 opening statement, Representative Eric Swalwell said, “speed cannot come at the cost of operability.” That is a member’s statement at a later congressional hearing, not a finding about the cause of the 2024 outage. GAO’s September 2024 report provides the official discussion of the incident and resilience lessons: GAO-24-107231.
