The appointments elevated leaders from Prime, Alexa, advertising, AWS, fashion and corporate development into a group that worked with then-CEO Jeff Bezos on major decisions and company operations, according to GeekWire’s December 5, 2019 report.
What Amazon’s S-team was
The S-team was an internal senior operating-leadership group, not a corporate board or a synonym for every executive officer Amazon reports to regulators. GeekWire described it as a small circle that regularly worked with Bezos on important decisions and Amazon’s day-to-day operations. Its membership and size changed over time, so the 22-member figure is a snapshot of December 2019 rather than a fixed limit.
The distinction matters: membership in an internal leadership group does not, by itself, establish that someone was an SEC-reported executive officer or a designated successor to Bezos or another leader.
Who joined the S-team in December 2019
GeekWire reported that all six came from within Amazon. Their roles below are the positions reported at the time, not their later titles.

| Rohit Prasad | Vice president and head scientist, Alexa | Voice technology, artificial intelligence and connected devices. |
| Colleen Aubrey | Vice president, Performance Advertising | Advertising as a growing business in its own right, beyond its role supporting retail. |

| Christine Beauchamp | Vice president, Amazon Fashion | Amazon’s apparel and fashion business. |
| Peter Krawiec | Vice president, Worldwide Corporate Development | Acquisitions, investments and strategic partnerships. |
Why the appointments mattered
Amazon was representing more than retail and cloud
The six positions brought a mix of established platforms, growth areas and strategic functions into the senior leadership circle. Prime and AWS were already central to Amazon’s business, while advertising and fashion were expanding areas. Alexa represented a technology and devices bet; corporate development brought portfolio decisions such as investments and partnerships into the same leadership conversation.
The appointments directly show broader representation for those businesses and functions in the S-team. They can be read as a signal of their strategic importance, but the reporting does not establish specific spending plans or prove that any one appointment was made to prepare a successor.

The group was expanding amid leadership turnover
The additions came as Steve Kessel planned to leave Amazon in January 2020 and Jeff Blackburn planned a one-year sabbatical in 2020. GeekWire reported that the six were not direct replacements for either executive and that other teams would cover their responsibilities.
Two women joined, but the change was limited
Aubrey and Beauchamp were the two women among the six additions. GeekWire framed their appointments as adding some diversity to a group previously criticized as heavily male. Amazon’s 2020 proxy materials cited contemporary reporting that the top 22 executives were 86% men and 14% women; that is a historical figure, not a current workforce measure. The appointments added representation, but do not alone demonstrate a broad change in leadership demographics.

How the S-team changed after Bezos
Bezos stopped serving as Amazon CEO in July 2021 and became executive chair; Andy Jassy became president and CEO. Amazon’s 2026 annual report identifies Bezos as executive chair and Jassy as president and CEO. Amazon’s 2026 annual report
Several of the 2019 appointees later held different roles. Amazon’s current S-team page lists Matt Garman as AWS CEO, Neil Lindsay as SVP of Amazon Health Services, Colleen Aubrey as SVP of AWS Applied AI Solutions, Christine Beauchamp as SVP of North America Stores, and Peter Krawiec as SVP of Worldwide Corporate and Business Development. Rohit Prasad does not appear on that roster. These are later roles and should not be confused with their 2019 positions. Amazon’s current S-team roster
