DGLegacy is a digital legacy planning app designed to catalog assets and alert nominated beneficiaries if its process detects that a user may have died or become unexpectedly inactive. It can help loved ones learn what exists and where to look, but it does not establish their legal right to inherit, transfer ownership, or replace a will and other estate-planning arrangements.
What DGLegacy says it does
DGLegacy describes its service as a digital legacy planning and inheritance app. According to DGLegacy, users set up an “alive” event through its HeartBeat protocol, catalog assets, invite beneficiaries and trustees, and configure detection for a fatal or unexpected event. The goal is to notify designated people and give them information that can help identify and locate assets.
TechCrunch’s October 28, 2024 profile reported that users could catalog assets, upload related files, and invite beneficiaries and trustees. It described the company’s monitoring and follow-up process as checking connected public social posts and biometric logins, then sending an email and making a call if activity paused. That is a description attributed to the company and TechCrunch, not an independently tested guarantee that a particular event will be detected or a message delivered. Read TechCrunch’s report.
Finding assets is not the same as inheriting them
DGLegacy’s FAQ says the service does not handle claiming asset ownership; its role is to alert nominated beneficiaries and help them identify and locate assets. A notification or account record does not itself transfer property or prove that a recipient is legally entitled to it. The relevant institution, estate representative, and applicable law determine the process for claiming an asset.

DGLegacy also says it is not a law firm, is not licensed to practice law, and does not provide legal advice. Treat the app as a possible supplement to estate planning—not a substitute for a valid will, account-level beneficiary designations, powers of attorney, trusts where appropriate, or advice from a lawyer familiar with your jurisdiction.
What to put in place alongside a digital inventory
A digital catalog is most useful when it fits into a broader plan that people responsible for your affairs can actually use. Guardian Capital Advisors’ September 2023 checklist is written for Canadian readers; its examples should not be assumed to apply everywhere. Consider these planning tasks and confirm their legal effect locally:

- Keep an inventory of assets and liabilities. Record enough information for an executor or other appropriate person to know what exists and where to find supporting documents. Review it when accounts, property, or other important circumstances change.
- Review beneficiary designations as well as your will. Some registered accounts and insurance products allow named beneficiaries. Joint accounts may also have survivorship rules in the Canadian context covered by Guardian’s checklist. How these arrangements work depends on the asset and jurisdiction.
- Choose and inform an executor. Make sure the person you select knows where key documents are kept and how to reach the relevant institutions, without relying on an app notification as the whole plan.
- Plan for incapacity and the needs of beneficiaries. A power of attorney may be relevant if you cannot manage your affairs. Trusts or other arrangements may merit consideration for minors or other beneficiaries. These are topics to discuss with a qualified local professional, not universal instructions.

How to evaluate DGLegacy or another legacy tool
Compare a dedicated service with a spreadsheet, personal digital vault, or estate plan by looking at the practical differences—not just the promise of “digital inheritance.” DGLegacy’s own site compares its approach with do-it-yourself methods and estate planning, but those comparisons are company descriptions rather than independent evaluations.

Keep the legal and geographic limits in view
Estate administration is jurisdiction-specific. Guardian Capital Advisors’ checklist is Canadian-context guidance, while DGLegacy’s website describes the company’s service and compliance claims; neither should be treated as a substitute for advice on the law that governs your assets. Confirm how your will, beneficiary designations, joint ownership, and incapacity documents work where you live and where relevant assets are held.
DGLegacy’s website also says it uses encrypted data and certified data centers and claims compliance with California’s CCPA and Europe’s GDPR. These statements are attributable to the company and do not, on their own, establish independent verification, eliminate security risk, or guarantee that beneficiaries will successfully claim assets.
