Cryptocurrency Investing For Dummies by Kiana Danial is a broad beginner’s introduction to crypto investing, not a live guide to today’s prices, platforms, regulations or tax forms. The second edition was published in 2023; use it to learn the subject areas, then verify time-sensitive details with current primary sources.
Which book does this title refer to?
It refers to Kiana Danial’s Cryptocurrency Investing For Dummies, second edition. Wiley’s catalog lists a 400-page softcover, ISBN 978-1-119-98912-7, published in April 2023. The official For Dummies page gives March 28, 2023 as the publication date. Those are the dates each publisher page reports; the edition and ISBN identify the book if you are checking a listing.
Wiley’s book page describes it as an introduction for new crypto-market participants and people considering adding cryptocurrency to an existing portfolio. That is the publisher’s positioning, not an independent assessment of the book or a recommendation to invest.
What does the second edition cover?
The contents range from basic concepts to more specialized assets and approaches. The breadth may help a beginner build a map of the subject, but a chapter’s presence does not establish that an investment or technique is suitable, safe or profitable.
#1 Best Overall
Foundations and portfolio decisions
- Cryptocurrency and blockchain fundamentals
- Risks, buying crypto and using wallets
- Crypto asset types, evaluation and diversification
Other assets and investing approaches
- Initial coin offerings (ICOs), mining, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and crypto-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs)
- Futures, options, technical approaches, and short- and long-term strategies
- Managing losses and taxes
The publisher’s contents listing establishes that these topics are included; it does not show that every method is appropriate for a first-time investor. The For Dummies page’s cheat-sheet advice is to research an asset’s fundamentals before adding it to a portfolio.
How should a beginner use it?
- Start with the foundations and risks. Build a basic understanding of the assets and technology before deciding whether to buy anything.
- Use the wallet and buying material to identify questions. Custody and purchase choices have practical consequences. The book’s coverage alone is not a current endorsement of a wallet, exchange or product.
- Treat the strategy chapters as material to evaluate, not instructions to follow automatically. A discussion of trading, derivatives or other crypto-related assets does not make them appropriate for your circumstances.
- Check dated and jurisdiction-specific details independently. Market conditions, platform availability, rules and tax requirements can change after a 2023 publication.
What needs a current source beyond the book?
For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property rather than currency. Its digital-assets guidance says the federal return question covers receiving a digital asset as a reward, award or payment, or selling, exchanging or otherwise disposing of a digital asset or financial interest during the tax year. The IRS also says taxpayers with digital-asset transactions must report them whether or not they resulted in taxable gain or loss, and should keep records of acquisitions, receipts, sales, exchanges, dispositions and relevant fair market values. Consult the IRS digital-assets guidance and the instructions for the relevant tax year; this is U.S. federal information, not advice for other jurisdictions or a determination of an individual tax outcome.
Rank #2
For investment decisions, the publisher’s own cheat sheet advises researching an asset’s fundamentals before adding it. Use current, reliable sources for facts that can change, and do not treat a book’s coverage as evidence that an asset is sound or that a strategy will work. Neither official book page provides an attributable, dated performance figure that establishes returns or adoption.

It is a plausible fit if you want a wide-ranging introduction to crypto investing topics and understand that the edition dates to 2023. Its scope includes fundamentals, risk, custody, diversification, several asset categories, investment approaches and taxes. It is not enough on its own for present-day platform choices, market decisions or tax filing: those require current information matched to your situation and location.
