You generally cannot transfer cryptocurrency directly to a standard bank account. First sell or convert it to government-issued currency, such as USD, then withdraw the cash balance to a linked bank account using ACH, wire, or an eligible instant-payment service.
The exact steps, fees, limits, and timing depend on the platform, country, state, bank, and payment method. The examples below cover Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance.US; check that fiat withdrawals are available where you live.
The basic process
- Complete identity verification on an exchange that supports bank withdrawals in your location.
- Link a bank account held in the same legal name as your verified exchange account.
- Sell or convert your cryptocurrency into USD or another supported fiat currency.
- Withdraw the cash balance using ACH, a wire transfer, or an eligible instant-payment service.
- Check the transaction status and wait for the bank transfer to settle.
Moving dollars from the exchange to your bank is separate from selling the crypto. For U.S. tax purposes, the sale can create a taxable capital gain or loss even if the cash remains on the exchange.
Before you transfer crypto to your bank
Confirm that fiat withdrawals are supported
Not every exchange offers cash withdrawals in every country or U.S. state. Check the platform’s supported regions and available withdrawal methods before sending crypto there. A wallet that only supports crypto transfers will not, by itself, send dollars to your bank.

Verify your identity
Exchanges may require identity verification before allowing fiat withdrawals. You may need to provide your legal name, address, date of birth, government-issued identification, and—in some cases—additional source-of-funds information.
Use a matching bank account
The bank account generally needs to belong to you and use the same legal name as your exchange account. Coinbase and Kraken require matching ownership for their relevant U.S. bank-transfer services. A withdrawal to another person’s account may be rejected or delayed.
Check the available balance
Do not rely only on your total account balance. Look for wording such as “Available to send or cash out.” Recent deposits or purchases may be subject to a temporary withdrawal hold, even if you can trade with the balance.

ACH, wire, and instant transfers compared
| Method | Typical use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| ACH | Routine U.S. bank withdrawals | Usually slower than instant services; Binance.US lists 1–5 business days. |
| RTP or instant transfer | Eligible U.S. banks and exchange accounts | May arrive within minutes, but can take longer. Fees, limits, and bank eligibility apply. |
| Wire transfer | Larger withdrawals or situations where ACH is unavailable | May involve different instructions, fees, cutoff times, and bank processing rules. |
An exchange’s “instant” option is a specific payment product, not a promise that every bank withdrawal will be immediate. Bank holidays, compliance checks, and the receiving bank can affect delivery.
Why your crypto withdrawal may be blocked
Recent ACH deposit hold
Exchanges may restrict withdrawals while a recent bank deposit is being finalized. Binance.US currently describes a 7-day, or 168-hour, hold on certain ACH deposits. During that period, the dollars—and crypto bought with them, including USDT—may be usable for trading but unavailable for withdrawal. Binance.US says the hold cannot be shortened or waived.
Coinbase says its hold period depends on account history, payment activity, and transaction history. The confirmation screen or email should show when funds become available.
The bank account name does not match
A mismatched account holder is a common reason for a rejected cashout. Use a bank account that belongs to you and meets the exchange’s ownership requirements.

You recently changed security details
Security changes can trigger temporary withdrawal restrictions. Binance.US says withdrawals may be locked for 48 hours after a password or two-factor-authentication reset and for 120 hours after an email-address change.
The account is under review
An exchange may pause funding activity because of suspected fraud, a chargeback, unusual activity, or a compliance review. Kraken says some restrictions may still allow cash withdrawals to a bank account in your own name, but crypto must first be converted to fiat. Read the platform’s message and use its official support channel. Do not pay an alleged “verification fee” to someone who contacts you outside the exchange’s app or website.
You entered the wrong withdrawal details or a bank holiday delays settlement
Before confirming, check the bank account, routing information where applicable, currency, amount, and payment network. Once submitted, cancellation may be difficult or impossible. ACH transfers are not instant: Binance.US lists 1–5 business days and notes that bank holidays can affect processing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fees to check before confirming
The final review screen is the best source for the cost of your transaction. Possible charges include:
- A trading fee or spread when selling or converting crypto.
- A cash-withdrawal fee.
- An extra charge for instant delivery.
- A wire fee charged by the exchange or bank.
- A blockchain network fee if you first move crypto between wallets or platforms.
For example, Kraken lists a 1.50% fee for Instant Transfer, capped at $50, while Binance.US says its Convert quote includes a spread. A “no trading fee” label does not necessarily mean the conversion is free; compare the quoted amount with the market price.

U.S. tax considerations
For U.S. taxpayers, selling crypto for dollars generally creates a capital gain or loss based broadly on sale proceeds minus adjusted basis, with fees affecting the relevant amounts. The taxable event is generally the sale or other disposal of the crypto—not the later transfer of dollars from the exchange to your bank.
The IRS says taxable digital-asset transactions must be reported even if you do not receive a tax form. Individuals generally use Form 8949 and summarize transactions on Schedule D, subject to applicable reporting rules. For sales after 2025, digital-asset brokers generally have Form 1099-DA reporting obligations, subject to applicable rules and exceptions.
Keep records of purchase dates, purchase prices, fees, sale confirmations, and transfers. A bank statement showing the final cash deposit is not a complete record of the crypto sale.
A safer transfer checklist
- Confirm the exchange supports withdrawals where you live.
- Verify your identity and link a bank account in your own legal name.
- Check the balance labeled available to cash out.
- Sell only the amount you intend to convert, and review the quoted price.
- Compare ACH, wire, and instant-transfer fees and delivery estimates.
- Send a small test withdrawal if you are using a bank account or method for the first time.
- Save the sale confirmation and withdrawal receipt for your records.
- Never share your password, two-factor authentication code, or recovery phrase with a purported support agent.
FAQ
Can I transfer Bitcoin directly to my bank account?
Usually not. Sell or convert the Bitcoin into your local currency on an exchange, then withdraw the cash balance to a linked bank account.

How long does it take to move crypto money to a bank?
It depends on the method. Eligible instant transfers may arrive within minutes or take up to 24 hours, while ordinary ACH withdrawals can take several business days. Holds, bank holidays, and reviews can add time.
Why can I trade my crypto but not withdraw it?
Your funds may be under a withdrawal hold from a recent ACH deposit or purchase. Other causes include a bank-account name mismatch, a security change, a provider limit, or an account review.
Do I owe tax when I transfer the money to my bank?
For U.S. taxpayers, the crypto sale generally creates the taxable event. Moving the resulting dollars from the exchange to your bank is normally just a cash transfer, but the sale may produce a capital gain or loss that must be reported.
The Bottom Line
To move crypto to a bank account, first sell the asset for cash, then withdraw that cash using the exchange’s supported bank-transfer method. Check the available balance, matching account ownership, fees, delivery estimate, and any withdrawal hold before confirming. In the U.S., record the sale separately from the bank transfer because the sale—not necessarily the cash deposit—can create the tax obligation.
