“I Shouldn’t Say This in Public”: United CEO Floats Buying Flighty, Raising Passenger-Privacy Questions

United CEO Scott Kirby publicly floated buying Flighty. The remarks do not establish a deal, but Flighty’s policy explains why a future change in ownership could raise questions about traveler data and the app’s independence.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said in a January 15, 2026 interview that he had told his team to “just go buy Flighty.” That is evidence of his interest in acquiring the flight-tracking app—not evidence that United made an offer or completed a purchase. The privacy question is still worth asking: Flighty says it does not sell personal information, but its privacy policy allows information to be transferred in a sale, merger, acquisition, or partnership.

What Scott Kirby said about Flighty

In a January 15, 2026 Stratechery interview about United’s technology strategy, Kirby discussed improving the detail and usefulness of travel information, including weather and flight updates. After interviewer Ben Thompson brought up Flighty and its founder, Ryan Jones, Kirby said United had spoken with Flighty and that he had told his team to buy the app.

Kirby’s explanation focused on people and product culture as well as technology. He said he wanted capable people from outside United’s headquarters who could challenge internal assumptions, and said United would continue operating the product as Flighty. His remarks describe a preference or internal direction; they do not establish that United made a formal offer, signed an agreement, or acquired the company.

Is United actually buying Flighty?

The cited primary material establishes Kirby’s public interest, not a transaction. It does not establish an offer, signed agreement, regulatory approval, or completed acquisition. The sound conclusion from that record is that Kirby floated buying Flighty—not that United is buying it.

That distinction matters for users deciding whether to change how they use the app. No data transfer, change in ownership, or change to Flighty’s privacy practices follows from the interview alone. The interview is the latest transaction-related evidence identified here; it is not a guarantee that circumstances have remained unchanged since then.

What Flighty does—and why United might want it

Flighty describes its app as providing real-time flight details, including delay alerts, gate changes, and cancellation information. Its press page says it has millions of users. It is a multi-airline product, so its appeal is not limited to people flying United.

More useful flight information

Flighty’s tracking and alerts could complement an airline’s customer-facing tools. Kirby’s interview places technology, operational information, weather, and customer experience within United’s broader competitive strategy. He did not say that buying Flighty would necessarily improve United’s app or specify which product capabilities United would adopt.

Talent and product culture

Kirby emphasized bringing in people who could work differently from a large airline’s existing organization. That makes his idea sound at least partly like a talent and product-culture acquisition, rather than simply a plan to copy Flighty’s features into United’s app. The interview does not establish whether he envisaged a full acquisition, an acqui-hire, a partnership, or another arrangement.

What information Flighty says it handles

Flighty’s privacy policy, updated February 25, 2026, says personally identifiable information is not required to use the service. That does not mean the app never handles information connected to a user or itinerary. What it may process depends partly on what a user provides and which features they enable.

  • TripIt: If a user enables TripIt synchronization, Flighty stores a token. The policy says Flighty does not see the user’s TripIt email address or password.
  • Email, name, and photo: Flighty may store an email address if provided, including for service or marketing communications. A name or photo may be stored if supplied for device synchronization or a profile.
  • Location: If location access is enabled, Flighty says it uses airport-location information and immediately forgets non-airport location data.
  • Calendar: Calendar import may send events that appear flight-related to Flighty’s server so the service can identify matching flights. This means itinerary details could reach the service through an integration, not just through manual entry.
  • Friends, notifications, and technical data: Flighty may use iCloud identifiers supplied by Apple for Flighty Friends, random login or push-notification tokens, and basic technical information such as IP addresses. The policy also describes anonymous analytics.

These categories should not be collapsed into a claim that Flighty necessarily holds a complete, personally identified travel history for every user. A person who uses fewer integrations and supplies less profile information may provide less identifiable information than someone who connects calendars, TripIt, location, or Friends features.

What Flighty says about selling and sharing data

Flighty says it does not sell personal information. Its policy says it shares information only when needed to provide functionality or comply with legal requirements, and says it does not use Facebook or Google tracking code in the app. The policy also says users can request access to or deletion of their personal information.

Flighty’s data-use help page gives a broader plain-language assurance: it says Flighty does not store or share personal information about users, devices, or flights and never sells data. Read alongside the policy, that statement should not be taken to mean no information is ever retained or processed. The detailed policy describes feature-related, technical, security, analytics, and legal circumstances in which information may be handled.

Why an acquisition could change the privacy question

The policy’s corporate-transaction language is the key qualification to Flighty’s no-sale assurance. It says Flighty may sell, buy, merge, or partner with other businesses, and that user information may be among the assets transferred in such a transaction.

A transfer clause does not by itself give a buyer unrestricted permission to use every record for any purpose. The practical effect would depend on the transaction’s structure, what data and assets changed hands, applicable law, contractual commitments, any revised policy, and whether users received notice or a choice. It would also matter whether Flighty’s systems remained separate or information could be linked with United booking, loyalty, or customer-service records.

Questions that would matter if a deal were announced

  • Would United buy the company, selected technology, or another set of assets?
  • Which user records, identifiers, or operational data would be transferred?
  • Would Flighty’s policy change, and would users receive notice or a consent option?
  • Would Flighty data remain technically separate from United’s booking and MileagePlus systems?
  • Would support for tracking other airlines remain as prominent and complete?
  • What limits would apply to marketing, analytics, or other uses of transferred information?

Could United use Flighty data to set fares?

That is a hypothetical concern, not an established plan. The available sources do not show that United intended to use Flighty data for personalized pricing, competitor targeting, route decisions, or partnership negotiations. Nor do they establish that United would be legally or technically free to combine Flighty information with airline customer records.

If a transaction occurred, a reasonable privacy question would be whether information about a traveler’s flight interests or tracking activity could be linked to an airline account or used for marketing. Whether that could happen, and under what limits, would require details about the transaction, the data involved, the companies’ policies, and applicable legal obligations. It is not evidence that fares are currently being set using Flighty data.

What could change for Flighty users—and what is only a possibility

Kirby said United would keep running the product under the Flighty name. That is a stated intention in an interview, not a binding promise about future branding, features, or independence. An acquisition could bring more resources or access to operational information, but those are possible benefits, not announced outcomes.

Users could also reasonably weigh the risks of a change in ownership: Flighty might become more integrated with United, prioritize United customers, alter its subscription or marketing approach, or reduce its perceived neutrality as a tool for tracking competing airlines. None of those changes has been established by Kirby’s remarks. Even without a change in data use, some customers may value having a flight tracker that is not owned by one of the airlines it covers.

How to limit optional information sharing now

Users do not need to assume a sale has happened to review what information they choose to provide. Flighty says users can contact the company to request access to or deletion of personal information.

  1. Review the current policy: Read Flighty’s privacy policy and check it again if the company announces a transaction or revises its terms.
  2. Review optional integrations: In Flighty and your device settings, check whether you need calendar import, location access, TripIt synchronization, or Flighty Friends. Turn off integrations you do not use.
  3. Limit profile information: Avoid supplying optional details such as an email, name, or photo if you do not want them associated with the service.
  4. Request access or deletion if appropriate: Use Flighty’s contact method described in its policy to ask about personal information associated with you or request its deletion.

What would make the story materially different

A formal announcement from United or Flighty, a transaction filing, or a revised Flighty policy could change the assessment. Until then, the relevant distinction is between a CEO publicly expressing interest in buying an app and an actual transfer of ownership or user information. The concern is about possible future data stewardship and product independence—not evidence of current fare-setting or misuse.
