Framework’s Roughly Monthly Price Changes Reflect a Wider Memory and Silicon Crunch

Framework has been updating prices roughly monthly as it replaces lower-cost inventory with more expensive memory, storage and other components. Its July 22, 2026 update was especially stark: Framework said its supplier’s price for LPCAMM2 memory had more than doubled, and listed new-order 32GB and 64GB modules at $800 and $1,600, respectively. Those are Framework’s prices for a particular memory format—not a across-the-board increase to every Framework computer.

What Framework has been raising—and why

The headline description of monthly RAM hikes is broadly right, but incomplete. Framework describes its updates as occurring on a “roughly monthly” cadence. Changes have varied by component and configuration: some memory and storage prices rose, some held steady, and some SSD prices fell after Framework qualified a less expensive supplier.

Framework says it buys components at different prices over time and uses a weighted-average-cost model. That means its listed price may not immediately track the cost of the newest shipment. When older, cheaper inventory runs out, the cost of replacement stock can become visible in a later price update. The same logic can produce uneven changes between capacities, or a reduction when sourcing improves. Framework’s running account is at its memory and storage pricing update.

The issue also reaches beyond DRAM. Framework has cited NAND flash used in SSDs and Storage Expansion Cards, as well as CPUs, Windows licensing and other silicon. A Bitkom position paper describes broader volatility in memory and storage pricing and procurement: Bitkom’s 2026 position paper. Framework’s announcements establish its own supplier-cost explanation; they do not establish that one cause, such as AI demand, accounts for every increase.

How the price updates developed

Date Framework-reported change Why it matters
December 17, 2025 Storage prices increased as supplier costs rose. The pressure already included NAND and SSDs, not just RAM.
December 24, 2025 Framework set memory prices near weighted-average supplier costs and cited about $10 per GB for 8GB, 16GB and 32GB modules. It warned that further increases could follow within the next month.
January 12, 2026 Desktop and Mainboard prices increased, especially for 128GB configurations using LPDDR5x. High-capacity Desktop configurations were particularly exposed.
February 11, 2026 DDR5 prices were listed at $12–$16 per GB; Desktop and Mainboard prices were 6%–16% higher. A clear example of the roughly monthly cadence.
March 9, 2026 DDR5 prices rose to $13–$18 per GB; selected Laptop 16 and Desktop configurations were also repriced. Framework flagged costs beyond memory, including other silicon and CPUs.
April 6, 2026 Some DDR5 prices held steady, while selected SSDs, Laptop 16 64GB configurations and Storage Expansion Cards increased. Changes were selective rather than universal.
May 12 and May 27, 2026 Framework adjusted selected memory and SSD prices on May 12. On May 27, it made a one-off Desktop update after lower-cost 128GB inventory was exhausted. The later update was an exception to a regular cadence, not a scheduled monthly surcharge.
June 15, 2026 DDR5 prices were stable, while SSD and 128GB Desktop prices increased. Framework paused production of the 250GB Storage Expansion Card after NAND costs made it uneconomic. Storage costs were a parallel pressure.
June 25, 2026 Some Laptop 13 Pro SSD prices fell after Framework qualified ADATA’s XPG MARS 970. Framework also reported passing through lower sourcing costs.
July 22, 2026 Framework said LPCAMM2 supplier pricing was more than twice the cost of its prior inventory; new-order 32GB and 64GB prices rose sharply. This was the most dramatic update in the running announcement.

The figures above are dated changes in Framework’s continuing announcement, not a single price list that took effect all at once.

Why the July Laptop 13 Pro change stands out

The July update concerned LPCAMM2 in the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 version of the Framework Laptop 13 Pro. Framework said the new supplier price was more than double its previous inventory cost—well above its earlier expectation of a low-to-mid-double-digit percentage increase.

LPCAMM2 capacity Framework price in the July 22 update Context
16GB $239 Temporarily retained for new orders.
32GB $800, previously $439 New-order price in Framework’s update.
64GB $1,600, previously $849 New-order price for later pre-orders.

These are Framework configuration prices reported on July 22, 2026, not universal retail prices or prices for every Framework laptop. Framework also said its available LPCAMM2 inventory was sufficient for existing pre-orders overall, but not in the same capacity mix customers had chosen.

Which Framework products have different upgrade paths?

Product or configuration Memory type What that means for buying memory separately
Framework Laptop DIY models using DDR5 Replaceable DDR5 SO-DIMM Often the clearest opportunity to source memory elsewhere, subject to model-specific compatibility.
Laptop 13 Pro Intel Core Ultra Series 3 LPCAMM2 Ordinary SO-DIMM kits are not substitutes; third-party availability may be more limited.
Laptop 13 Pro AMD Ryzen AI 300 SO-DIMM A more conventional replaceable-memory path, but check the exact configuration.
Framework Desktop LPDDR5x Do not assume a standard user-installed desktop DIMM upgrade is possible.
Pre-built configurations Varies Check the specific SKU and its upgrade options before budgeting for separate memory.

Framework’s earlier guidance encouraged buyers to compare retail prices and bring compatible memory for DIY systems. Its community post on the silicon crunch discusses that approach: Framework’s community update. For model-specific compatibility and installation guidance, consult the Framework Knowledge Base. “DDR5” alone is not enough to establish compatibility: generation, processor platform, capacity, speed, density and kit configuration can matter.

What existing pre-order customers should check

Framework says it honors the original price on existing pre-orders when component prices rise, and may automatically reduce a pre-order price if a component becomes cheaper before fulfillment. Editing a memory or storage option can cause that item to use the current price instead. The July LPCAMM2 situation added a separate issue: some customers’ memory capacity could be changed because available stock did not match the order mix.

  • For 64GB pre-orders beyond Laptop Batch 4 and Mainboard Batch 7, Framework said it could change the order to 32GB at the original 32GB price.
  • For 32GB DIY and Mainboard pre-orders beyond those batches, it said it could change the order to 16GB at the original 16GB price.

That is a capacity substitution, not simply an increase to the original order price. If you received a notice, check the revised capacity and total, whether the offered configuration meets your needs, and the order terms or Framework support guidance for available cancellation or modification options. The published pricing update does not establish every customer’s remedy or whether rules differ by order type.

How to decide whether to buy now or wait

Buying now

Buying now can make sense if you need a computer soon, have a protected pre-order price, or want a high-capacity option that may still be available from lower-cost inventory. Framework itself advised configuring certain high-capacity options while that inventory remained. A pre-order’s protection does not, however, guarantee that the originally selected capacity will be delivered when inventory allocation changes.

Waiting

Waiting may help if your desired configuration is caught in a temporary supplier spike, you can use your current computer, or Framework later qualifies a less expensive part. The June Laptop 13 Pro SSD reduction shows that prices can move down as well as up. But Framework also warned that supplier costs could continue rising through 2026, so postponing a purchase is not a guaranteed way to save.

Buying memory or storage separately

For a DIY laptop with replaceable DDR5, compare Framework’s configuration price with a compatible retail kit, including shipping, return costs and the effort of installation. Framework points buyers to PCPartPicker for component-price comparisons. For SSDs, verify the model’s interface and physical compatibility before buying a third-party drive. Neither strategy automatically applies to LPCAMM2 or LPDDR5x configurations.

When comparing a complete Framework system with another computer, compare the whole configuration: processor and graphics, memory, storage, display, battery, weight, ports, operating-system license, warranty and upgradeability. A lower upfront price may be more attractive if you prioritize performance per dollar; Framework’s repairability and modular upgrades may matter more if you expect to keep and service the system over time.

Is Framework’s explanation enough to call the increases fair?

Framework attributes the changes to higher supplier costs and says it aims to adjust prices to cover those costs, honor existing pre-order prices and lower prices when sourcing becomes cheaper. Its dated component-level updates make the unevenness visible, including both increases and reductions. That is the company’s account; the published figures do not independently establish its full margins or prove that each customer-facing price exactly matches supplier cost.

For buyers, the practical concern is less abstract: a large memory surcharge or a capacity substitution can change whether a configuration makes financial sense. The modular design offers a meaningful way around some ordinary DDR5 pricing, but not every memory format is equally replaceable or available.

Bottom line

Framework’s roughly monthly repricing reflects a wider memory, storage and silicon crunch, with increases driven in part by older, cheaper inventory running out. The July 22, 2026 LPCAMM2 update was unusually severe, but it did not raise every Framework price or affect every model in the same way. Check the exact memory technology and order status before buying: compatible DDR5 DIY systems offer the clearest path to sourcing RAM separately, while LPCAMM2 and Desktop LPDDR5x buyers have fewer assumptions they can safely make.
