The Toyota Sequoia leads this list for predicted odds of reaching 250,000 miles, but longevity does not mean an SUV rarely needs repairs. This ranking combines iSeeCars’ 2025 longevity estimates with RepairPal repair data and J.D. Power dependability results where available; use it as a starting point, then check the specific vehicle’s generation, service history, and recalls.

How this list was ranked

iSeeCars’ 2025 analysis of almost 400 million vehicle records estimates each model’s probability of reaching 250,000 miles. That measures extreme-longevity potential, not repair frequency or a guarantee of trouble-free ownership. RepairPal provides repair-cost, frequency, and severity data for some models; J.D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles. Consumer Reports uses member-survey data and predicts reliability for new or redesigned models. These sources measure different things, so their results should not be treated as interchangeable.

At a glance

Rank SUV Predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles Financial profile
1 Toyota Sequoia 39.1% Strong longevity potential; high fuel and wear costs
2 Toyota 4Runner 32.9% Strong record; older generations have more history
3 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 31.0% Efficient three-row SUV; hybrid components still need service
4 Lexus GX 18.3% Durable luxury SUV; premium operating costs
5 Lexus RX Hybrid 17.0% Efficient and long-lived; luxury parts and labor cost more
6 Honda Pilot 13.1% Roomy family SUV; current generation has less long-term history
7 Toyota Highlander 12.7% Broad service availability; reliability varies by year and powertrain
8 Chevrolet Suburban 11.8% High capacity; high fuel and wear costs
9 Lexus RX 10.7% Established luxury crossover; higher repair costs than mainstream models
10 Honda CR-V 10.6% Comparatively manageable maintenance costs

Percentages are predictions of reaching 250,000 miles, not the likelihood of avoiding repairs. Source: iSeeCars 2025 longest-lasting cars study.

1. Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia has the highest predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles among SUVs in iSeeCars’ 2025 study, at 39.1%, and ranked highest overall among vehicles. Its full-size design and available towing capability suit buyers who need space and capacity for many years.

Size brings costs: fuel, tires, brakes, and suspension work are typically more expensive than for a compact SUV. Current Sequoias use a twin-turbocharged hybrid powertrain, while the model’s long-term evidence is dominated by older generations. The current configuration therefore has less long-term history.

Best for: Towing, three-row space, and buyers prioritizing capacity and longevity over operating efficiency.

2. Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner has a 32.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. RepairPal rates it 4.0 out of 5.0 for reliability, with average annual repair and maintenance costs of $514, about 0.4 unscheduled shop visits per year, and a 13% chance that a repair will be severe. J.D. Power also gave the 4Runner a model-level award in its 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study.

The 2025 model began a new generation, replacing the previous naturally aspirated V6 with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder; a turbocharged hybrid version is also available. The 2010–2024 generation’s reputation is useful historical evidence, not proof of how the new generation will perform over the long term.

Best for: Long-term durability and off-road use, with the caveat that new-generation reliability is not yet established by decades of ownership.

3. Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The Highlander Hybrid has a 31.0% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, ahead of the gasoline Highlander in the iSeeCars analysis. It combines three-row utility with lower fuel consumption than a full-size SUV.

Fuel savings do not eliminate repair risk: the engine, cooling system, brakes, suspension, and hybrid components all require attention. J.D. Power’s 2026 study found higher problem rates for hybrids and plug-in hybrids than for gasoline vehicles overall. That is an industry-level result, not a Highlander-specific failure rate or proof that this model is unreliable.

Best for: Families who need three rows and drive enough for fuel efficiency to matter.

4. Lexus GX

The Lexus GX has an 18.3% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles and received a model-level award in J.D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study. Lexus ranked highest among premium brands in that study for the fourth consecutive year.

The GX’s luxury content and truck-based hardware can make parts, labor, tires, and repairs costly. The 2024 model introduced a new generation with a twin-turbocharged V6 in place of the previous V8; newer versions also offer a hybrid powertrain. The older generation has a longer ownership record.

Best for: Buyers seeking luxury and off-road capability who can budget for premium running costs.

5. Lexus RX Hybrid

The RX Hybrid has a 17.0% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, substantially above the gasoline RX in the iSeeCars analysis. It offers comfortable long-distance driving and can reduce fuel use compared with a similarly sized non-hybrid luxury crossover.

Repair costs can still exceed those of mainstream SUVs because of luxury-vehicle parts and labor. The current RX generation launched for 2023, so the longest-term evidence comes from earlier RX Hybrid generations. Lexus ranked highest among premium brands in J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability results, but that brand-level result is not a guarantee for an individual vehicle.

Best for: Comfortable commuting and road trips when efficiency and luxury matter more than minimizing purchase or repair costs.

6. Honda Pilot

The Pilot’s predicted probability of reaching 250,000 miles is 13.1%, placing it sixth among SUVs in iSeeCars’ 2025 ranking. It is one of the few non-Toyota or non-Lexus models near the top and offers a roomy three-row cabin without full-size SUV dimensions.

The current fourth generation debuted for 2023. Its established model-line reputation is not conclusive evidence about the newest generation; check the specific vehicle’s recalls, service record, warranty, and available reliability information.

Best for: Families seeking a roomy three-row SUV without moving to a full-size model.

7. Toyota Highlander

The gasoline Highlander has a 12.7% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles in the iSeeCars analysis. Toyota’s service and parts availability can make repairs easier to price-shop.

Reliability can vary by model year, engine, transmission, and drivetrain. The gasoline and hybrid versions are not identical from a repair-cost perspective. Consumer Reports uses owner surveys for reliability ratings and separately predicts reliability for new or substantially redesigned models; a prediction is not the same as decades of observed ownership.

Best for: Families wanting a three-row SUV with broad parts and service availability.

8. Chevrolet Suburban

The Suburban has an 11.8% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles and is the highest-ranked Chevrolet SUV in the iSeeCars table. Its large cabin, truck-based construction, and available V8 engines suit hauling and towing.

Fuel, tires, brakes, and suspension work can cost more than they do for a compact or midsize crossover. J.D. Power’s 2026 model-level award went to the mechanically related Chevrolet Tahoe, not the Suburban, so that award is not direct Suburban evidence.

Best for: Buyers who genuinely need maximum passenger, cargo, or towing capacity.

9. Lexus RX

The gasoline Lexus RX has a 10.7% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. RepairPal lists average annual repair and maintenance costs of $550 for the RX350 and reports issues including oil leaks on certain older V6 applications and air-conditioning amplifier failures.

Those reports span multiple generations and should not be applied automatically to every RX. Identify the exact model year and engine, check maintenance records, and look for open recalls before buying.

Best for: Buyers who want a long-running luxury crossover and can afford higher repair costs than for a mainstream equivalent.

10. Honda CR-V

The CR-V is the highest-ranked compact SUV in iSeeCars’ 250,000-mile list, with a 10.6% predicted chance of reaching that mileage. RepairPal lists average annual maintenance and repair costs of $407.

RepairPal reports issues across multiple generations, including air-conditioning compressor failures and sticky or inoperative door-lock tumblers. These reports do not mean every CR-V has those problems. The sixth generation began with the 2023 model year, so older CR-Vs have a longer ownership record than the current generation.

Best for: Buyers seeking practical utility and comparatively manageable maintenance costs.

How to choose an SUV with lower ownership costs

  1. Separate longevity from repair frequency. A vehicle can reach 250,000 miles while requiring repairs along the way. A high-mileage prediction is not a promise of low repair bills.
  2. Compare total operating costs. Include fuel, insurance, registration, tires, brakes, scheduled service, and financing costs. A reliable full-size SUV may still cost more to own than a compact crossover.
  3. Check the exact generation and powertrain. A redesign can introduce a new engine, transmission, hybrid system, software, or electrical architecture. Older model-line data does not establish the reliability of a substantially changed vehicle.
  4. Get a pre-purchase inspection. Ask a mechanic to check leaks, underbody damage, rust, suspension wear, transmission behavior, cooling-system condition, tire age, and diagnostic trouble codes.
  5. Verify recalls by VIN. Check the NHTSA recall tool and confirm that recall remedies are complete. A recall does not automatically indicate chronic mechanical failure.
  6. Keep a repair reserve. Even a dependable older SUV can need an expensive repair. Set aside cash rather than relying on high-interest credit or assuming an extended service contract will pay off.

Important caveats about current models

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is a new generation

The 2026 RAV4 is an all-new sixth-generation model offered only with hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrains. Reliability data from 2019–2025 models does not directly establish how this redesigned vehicle will perform over the long term. Consumer Reports distinguishes predicted reliability for new or redesigned vehicles from owner-survey evidence.

Recent redesigns have less long-term evidence

The 2025-and-newer 4Runner, 2024-and-newer GX, 2023-and-newer Pilot, 2023-and-newer CR-V, and 2023-and-newer RX differ from earlier generations. Consider their specific powertrains and available reliability data rather than assuming older generations’ records apply unchanged.

Recalls and reliability are not the same thing

Some Toyota and Lexus SUVs have had recalls involving instrument-panel software and other safety or compliance issues. A recall is not automatically evidence of a chronic mechanical fault, but buyers should verify completed remedies by VIN using the NHTSA recall tool.

Brand stereotypes can mislead

Toyota and Lexus lead this extreme-longevity comparison, but every vehicle needs maintenance and can develop costly faults. J.D. Power’s 2026 study found higher problem rates for hybrids than gasoline vehicles overall; that does not establish that every hybrid SUV is less dependable than every gasoline SUV. Compare model, generation, powertrain, and service history.

What the rankings mean for your budget

The Honda CR-V has the lowest cited RepairPal average annual cost in this article, at $407. The 4Runner’s cited average is $514 and the RX350’s is $550, but these figures cover different models and should not be treated as a full ranking of total ownership costs. Large SUVs such as the Sequoia and Suburban can have high fuel and wear-item costs even when their longevity potential is strong.

A vehicle’s capacity can justify higher costs if it replaces another expense, such as towing rentals or a second vehicle. Choose based on your actual needs, then compare specific vehicles and ownership costs.

FAQ

Which SUV on this list is most likely to reach 250,000 miles?

The Toyota Sequoia has the highest predicted probability in iSeeCars’ 2025 study, at 39.1%, followed by the Toyota 4Runner at 32.9% and Toyota Highlander Hybrid at 31.0%. These are predictions, not guarantees for an individual vehicle.

Which SUV on this list has the lowest cited annual repair and maintenance cost?

RepairPal lists the Honda CR-V at an average of $407 per year, the lowest figure cited here. The actual cost depends on model year, mileage, location, parts, and choice of repair shop.

Does a high chance of reaching 250,000 miles mean fewer repairs?

No. iSeeCars’ figure estimates the chance of reaching that mileage, not the chance of avoiding repairs along the way. A high-mileage vehicle still needs scheduled maintenance and may have expensive failures.

Should I buy a new-generation SUV based on an older model’s reliability reputation?

Not without qualification. A redesign can introduce new powertrains, software, or electronics, so historical model-line data may not establish the new generation’s long-term reliability. Check recalls, warranty terms, service records, and available generation-specific evidence.

The Bottom Line

The strongest longevity results in this list belong to the Sequoia, 4Runner, and Highlander Hybrid, while the CR-V has the lowest cited RepairPal annual cost. The GX and Suburban offer considerable capacity but can cost more to fuel and maintain; luxury models can also carry higher parts and labor costs. No ranking replaces checking the exact vehicle’s service history, VIN-based recalls, and condition.
