Facebook Marketplace is Facebook’s person-to-person marketplace for finding, buying, and selling physical items in your area. A local deal usually works like a classified ad: you message the other person, agree on a price and meeting or delivery arrangement, inspect the item, and pay directly.
Some listings offer Buy now, checkout, and delivery, but those features depend on the seller, item, and location. They should not be confused with automatic buyer protection for every Marketplace transaction. The safest approach is to treat local Marketplace deals as transactions with strangers, not as purchases from a conventional online retailer.
How Facebook Marketplace works
Marketplace appears inside Facebook and lets users search listings by item, category, location, distance, and date. Sellers upload photos and details, set a price, and choose whether to offer local pickup, delivery, or—where available—shipping.
Most local transactions happen through Facebook Messenger. You and the seller negotiate the price, decide where to meet, and arrange payment yourselves. Facebook does not automatically verify that an item exists, that its condition matches the description, or that a person is trustworthy.

Marketplace access is generally limited to adults with active accounts in supported countries. Meta may restrict access for new or inactive accounts, additional Facebook profiles, policy violations, or age and location requirements. In the United States, users generally must be at least 18.
How to find something to buy
On a computer
- Open Facebook and select Marketplace from the left-hand menu. Select See more if it is hidden.
- Enter an item in the search box and press Enter or Return.
- Use categories, filters, location, and distance to narrow the results.
- Use Sort by to view options such as Suggested, Distance, or Date listed.
In the Facebook app
- Tap Menu, then Marketplace. Tap See more if necessary.
- Tap Search and enter the item you want.
- Choose a location or distance, tap Filters, select your preferences, and tap Apply.
Sorting by distance or newest listings is available in the main Facebook app for iPhone and Android. Facebook Lite has fewer Marketplace features, including no equivalent sorting options for distance or new listings.
How to contact a seller
Open a listing and choose Message to write a specific question. The Send option sends the preset message “Is this available?” A custom message is usually more useful because it can establish that you have read the listing and are a serious buyer.
For example, ask: “Is the desk still available? Does it have any damage, and could we meet at the public library on Saturday at 2 p.m.?” Keep negotiations and transaction details in Facebook or Messenger where possible. Review the seller’s profile, but remember that a profile is not proof of identity or reliability.
A listing can remain visible even when another buyer is arranging a purchase. Sellers may mark it Available, Pending, or Sold. Pending means the sale is not final; sold removes the listing from Marketplace and notifies people who messaged the seller.
Buying with checkout and delivery
Some eligible listings offer an integrated checkout. If the listing has a Buy now button, the process on Facebook.com is generally:
- Open Marketplace and select the product.
- Click Buy now.
- Enter the requested payment, delivery, and contact information.
- Review the order and select Place order.
Checkout purchases appear in Order history. Meta says a purchase may be covered by Purchase Protection, so do not assume that every checkout or Marketplace transaction qualifies. If there is no Buy now button, the listing may be intended for a local transaction rather than Facebook checkout. Shipping and checkout availability varies by location.

For a local purchase, inspect the item before paying. Do not send a deposit merely because a seller provides photos, a screenshot of a payment, or an urgent explanation about another interested buyer.
How to sell an item
On a computer
- From Facebook Feed, select Marketplace.
- Click Create new listing, then Item for sale.
- Select Add photos and upload clear, recent images.
- Enter the title, price, category, condition, description, and other requested information.
- Click Next, then Publish.
In the Facebook app
- Tap Menu, then Marketplace.
- Tap Sell and then Create listing.
- Select the listing type and tap Add photos.
- Enter the price and item details.
- Open More listing options for additional details, category selection, and optional posting to eligible buy-and-sell groups or your profile.
- Tap Publish.
If Next is unavailable or gray, required listing information is probably missing. Entering 0 as the price indicates that an item is free. Do not use $1 or another artificially low price to attract clicks when the item costs more; Meta treats misleading pricing as a policy violation.
What to include in a listing
A precise listing reduces pointless messages and disagreements. Include:
- The correct item name, brand, model, size, and category.
- The actual asking price.
- Clear photos taken recently, including damage and worn areas.
- The condition and any known defects.
- Dimensions, compatibility information, or included accessories where relevant.
- Whether pickup, delivery, or shipping is available.
For electronics, remove personal accounts and data before selling. Record the serial number or IMEI where applicable, and describe battery condition, cracks, faults, or missing parts honestly. Avoid publishing sensitive information such as account passwords or full personal documents.
Editing, pausing, and completing a listing
On a computer, go to Marketplace → Selling → Your listings. Select Options on the relevant listing and choose Edit listing. Make the change and select Update.
Recommended Free Tools
You can change a listing’s status to Pending, Sold, or Available. Mark an item sold when the transaction is complete; this removes it from Marketplace. Changing it back to available can notify people who previously showed interest.
Marketplace listing limits and prohibited items
Meta currently lists monthly limits of 20 total new listings, with separate limits of five each for vehicles, auto parts and accessories, and homes for sale or rent. The limits reset on the first day of each month. A listing counts when created, even if you later delete it. Existing active listings remain active and do not count against the new month’s limit after the reset.

Marketplace is for physical products. Examples of prohibited listings include services such as house cleaning, most animals and animal products, medical and healthcare products, recalled products, weapons, drugs, counterfeit goods, and items that infringe intellectual-property rights. “In search of” posts, lost-and-found posts, jokes, and news are also not valid item listings. Meta’s full Commerce Policies control, and the examples can change.
Why a listing or Marketplace access may disappear
A listing may be rejected with a message such as There are issues with your product if Meta believes it violates its Commerce Policies. Other Marketplace users will not see a rejected listing. If you believe the decision is wrong, use the appeal option shown by Meta.

Marketplace access itself may be removed because of policy violations, prohibited listings, an additional Facebook profile, a new or inactive account, or age and location restrictions. If access is restored, Meta says you may need to refresh Facebook.com or update or reinstall the latest app version.
How to avoid Marketplace scams
The most common financial risk is sending money before you have verified the item and the person. Use these rules:
| Warning sign | Safer response |
|---|---|
| Pressure to pay immediately or send a deposit | Pause the deal and inspect the item first. |
| Request for gift cards, cryptocurrency, login details, or one-time codes | Do not provide them. End the conversation and report the listing. |
| Request to move immediately to text, email, or another platform | Keep communication in Facebook or Messenger where possible. |
| A check for more than the agreed price | Do not deposit it or return the difference. It may be a fake-check scam. |
| Payment screenshot or notification without money in your account | Verify the funds independently; screenshots are not proof of payment. |
| Price far below normal with an urgent story | Compare similar listings and assume the risk is high until verified. |
The FTC warns that a bank may make check funds available before discovering that a check is fraudulent. An overpayment followed by a request to send money back is a classic fake-check pattern.
Meeting safely for a local transaction
- Choose a public, well-lit location rather than giving a stranger your home address.
- Tell someone you trust where and when you are meeting.
- Use Messenger’s Send Plan feature to share the meeting plan with a Facebook friend, if available.
- Keep the agreed location unchanged. A last-minute request to go somewhere private is a reason to cancel.
- Bring a charged phone, and consider live-location sharing.
- Inspect and test the item before paying. For a vehicle or expensive electronic device, verify identifying details and ownership documents as appropriate.
- Do not carry large amounts of cash. Leave if anything feels unsafe.
If a person or listing seems suspicious, cancel the transaction and report it through Facebook. Your personal safety is more important than completing a bargain.
How useful are ratings?
Buyer and seller ratings can be submitted from the Facebook app for iPhone and Android, not from Facebook.com or Facebook Lite. Buyer ratings are private. Seller ratings may become public after the seller receives at least five eligible ratings.

Ratings are signals, not guarantees. Meta says it does not verify that every reviewer actually bought the product or used the service being reviewed. Look at the whole pattern: consistent details, realistic pricing, a normal conversation, and willingness to use a public meeting place.
FAQ
Is Facebook Marketplace free to use?
Browsing and creating a standard local item listing do not generally require a separate Marketplace fee. Costs can depend on the transaction method, such as shipping, checkout, or other features available for a particular listing. Agree on any delivery or service cost before completing the deal.
Does Facebook Marketplace protect buyers?
Not every purchase has buyer protection. Eligible checkout purchases may qualify for Purchase Protection, but local transactions arranged and paid for directly between people do not automatically receive the same coverage. Inspect local items before paying and do not assume Facebook will reimburse a loss.
Why can’t I access Facebook Marketplace?
Possible reasons include age or location restrictions, a new or inactive account, use of an additional Facebook profile, or a previous policy violation. If access is restored, refresh Facebook.com or update the Facebook app. Meta may also ask an adult user to complete age verification.
What should I do if a Marketplace transaction is a scam?
Stop communicating or sending money, preserve messages and payment records, and report the person and listing through Facebook. Contact your bank or payment provider immediately using its official contact details. If you shared a password or verification code, change the password and secure the affected account.
The Bottom Line
Facebook Marketplace can be useful for selling unwanted items and finding local bargains, but it is not automatically a secure retail checkout. Use an accurate price and description when selling; when buying, keep the conversation on Facebook, verify the item, meet publicly, and pay only after you are satisfied. Treat requests for deposits, gift cards, overpayments, or urgent off-platform payments as reasons to walk away.
