There is no single “Office 365” price. For U.S. consumers, Microsoft 365 Personal is listed at $99.99 a year or $9.99 a month, Family at $129.99 a year or $12.99 a month, and Office Home 2024 at $179.99 as a one-time purchase. For organizations, Microsoft lists Business Premium at $22 per user per month paid yearly, Office 365 E1 at $10, Microsoft 365 E3 at $36, and Office 365 E5 at $41. Microsoft 365 Copilot is listed separately at $30 per user per month paid yearly for eligible enterprise customers.
These are U.S. price signals shown on Microsoft pages accessed August 18, 2026—not a global price list or a guaranteed quote. Prices, packaging, taxes, billing terms, and eligibility can vary. Check the linked Microsoft page for the exact plan and region before budgeting or buying.
What “Office 365” means—and why the name affects the price
“Office 365” is often used informally for Microsoft’s productivity products, but it is not one interchangeable subscription. Microsoft sells consumer Microsoft 365 subscriptions, business Microsoft 365 suites, Office 365 enterprise plans, and perpetual Office purchases such as Office Home 2024.
Broadly, Office 365 plans emphasize Office applications and cloud services. Microsoft 365 plans may bundle those with broader capabilities such as identity, security, device management, or Windows, depending on the plan. A broader bundle is not automatically the better deal: the relevant question is whether its included services replace costs you would otherwise incur.

Consumer plans: personal, family, premium, or one-time purchase?
The following U.S. prices and product details come from Microsoft’s consumer buying page, accessed August 18, 2026. Monthly prices are monthly billing; annual prices are annual billing.
| Product | Price shown | People and storage | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $99.99/year or $9.99/month | One person; 1 TB cloud storage | A subscription for one person who wants current desktop Office apps and cloud storage. Not designed to provide separate household memberships. |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $129.99/year or $12.99/month | One to six people; up to 6 TB total, generally 1 TB per person | Often the lower per-person cost when several household members use it. Each person should use their own Microsoft account. |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $199.99/year or $19.99/month | One to six people | A higher-tier consumer subscription with expanded AI-related benefits. Check Microsoft’s current feature descriptions and usage limits rather than assuming AI use is unlimited. |
| Office Home 2024 | $179.99 one time | One PC or Mac on the current comparison page | A perpetual-license purchase rather than a Microsoft 365 subscription. It does not provide the same subscription bundle, cloud-storage allowance, or service ecosystem. |
When Family costs less per person
At the displayed $129.99 annual price, Family’s effective cost is about $65 per active person per year with two users, or about $21.67 with six. Those are arithmetic comparisons—not Microsoft-advertised per-person prices—and assume everyone actually uses the subscription.
How to compare a subscription with Office Home 2024
The one-time price is not directly comparable with one year of Microsoft 365. At the displayed $179.99 purchase price, the subscription alternatives over time would be $199.98 for two years, $299.97 for three years, and $499.95 for five years of Personal at its annual price. For Family, the corresponding totals are $259.98, $389.97, and $649.95. These calculations exclude tax and assume the displayed annual prices stay unchanged; they also do not assign a value to cloud storage, subscription services, or future feature updates. A one-time license may suit a person who wants one device and does not need those services, but it is not automatically cheaper for every use case.

Small-business plans: price the users and features you need
Microsoft’s business pricing page presents a family of plans, including Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium, and Microsoft 365 Apps for business. Microsoft also offers some commercial plans with and without Teams. Business subscriptions are generally priced per user, not per company; the business-plan family is positioned for organizations with up to 300 users. Confirm current eligibility and licensing rules with Microsoft for your situation.
| Plan or variant | Price information | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Business Basic | Check current Microsoft price | Consider when users need business email, cloud services, collaboration, and web or mobile Office, but do not all need installed desktop Office apps. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Standard | Check current Microsoft price | Consider when users need installed desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook alongside business services. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Premium | $22/user/month, paid yearly | Microsoft describes a bundle of desktop, web, and mobile apps, business email, identity and access management, device security and management, threat protection, and data-protection features. |
| Microsoft 365 Apps for business | Check current Microsoft price | Consider when the main requirement is Office apps and storage rather than the full collaboration and security bundle. |
| Plans with or without Teams | Check the exact variant and current Microsoft price | Compare what is included with what your organization already licenses; Teams packaging differs across products and markets. |
The Business Premium price is the U.S. signal shown on Microsoft’s business page accessed August 18, 2026. Microsoft’s business page did not publish prices for every other business tier, so use its live page rather than relying on an older comparison table.
Choosing among the business tiers
- Basic: a possible fit for browser-first teams that need organizational email and collaboration but not desktop Office for every worker.
- Standard: a possible fit when installed Office apps are needed but advanced endpoint protection and management are not the primary buying criteria.
- Premium: a possible fit when desktop apps must be combined with stronger identity, device management, threat protection, and data protection.
- Apps for business: a possible fit when the apps are the requirement and a larger set of business services is unnecessary.
Do not use a consumer Family subscription as a substitute for organizational accounts, business email administration, or business security and compliance controls.
Enterprise plans: Office 365 and Microsoft 365 are not the same comparison
Microsoft’s enterprise pages display U.S. list-price signals for several plans. Prices below are per user per month paid yearly, except where noted, and were visible on Microsoft pages accessed August 18, 2026. Enterprise agreements, reseller arrangements, geography, and the selected package can change the amount a customer pays.

| Plan | Displayed U.S. price | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Office 365 E1 | $10/user/month, paid yearly | Web and mobile versions of core Office apps. Do not assume it includes installed desktop Office applications. |
| Office 365 E3 | Check Microsoft’s current page | Compare its Office productivity and enterprise services with Microsoft 365 E3; the names are not interchangeable. |
| Office 365 E5 | $41/user/month, paid yearly | Positioned for advanced productivity, security, compliance, analytics, and enterprise capabilities. The premium is difficult to justify if those features are not needed. |
| Microsoft 365 E3 | $36/user/month, paid yearly | A broader enterprise suite with desktop, web, and mobile apps plus enhanced security and compliance positioning. |
| Microsoft 365 E5 | Check Microsoft’s current page | Review the live comparison and quote for the organization’s required capabilities; a price is not established here. |
See Microsoft’s live Office 365 enterprise pricing and Microsoft 365 enterprise pricing pages. Some enterprise arrangements require a sales-assisted quote. Enterprise plans support organizational deployments beyond the business family’s 300-user positioning, but exact terms depend on the licensing route and agreement.
Which enterprise tier is worth considering?
- Office 365 E1: consider when browser and mobile Office are enough and users do not need installed desktop apps or the broader Microsoft 365 security bundle.
- Microsoft 365 E3: consider when desktop apps and broader identity, device, security, or compliance capabilities are required at enterprise scale.
- E5: consider only after mapping the advanced security, compliance, analytics, governance, or communications features to a real requirement and comparing the bundle with separately licensed services.
Copilot, Teams, calling, and other additions can change the bill
A base license may not include every capability an organization expects. Microsoft’s enterprise Office 365 page shows Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30 per user per month paid yearly, requiring an eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription. That is an add-on price signal, not a standalone license price. Microsoft’s business page also shows a Business Premium with Copilot package at $32 per user per month paid yearly; compare that package with its underlying license rather than treating it as equivalent to the enterprise add-on.
Copilot should not automatically be assigned to every employee. A mixed deployment—licenses only for users with recurring work-grounded use cases—can control cost. Before expanding access, consider adoption, user training, data permissions, and governance. Poorly organized or overly permissive data can undermine a useful deployment, and a license price alone cannot establish a return on investment.
Teams availability depends on plan, market, and packaging. Microsoft shows Teams Enterprise at $8.55 per user per month paid yearly as an additional enterprise service. Teams chat and meetings are not the same as business phone service: Teams Phone, domestic or international calling, pay-as-you-go calling, and audio conferencing may require separate licenses or charges. Verify regional availability and the exact telephony components before budgeting; Microsoft’s enterprise comparison lists Teams and telephony components separately.

Budget for the parts outside the headline subscription
- Copilot licenses, Teams variants, Teams Phone, calling plans, or audio conferencing.
- Additional storage, advanced security, compliance, data governance, or identity and device-management products such as Defender, Intune, Purview, or Enterprise Mobility + Security.
- Migration, deployment, domain and identity setup, third-party backup, archiving, eDiscovery storage, training, and change management.
- Reseller or managed-service-provider fees, taxes, and any agreement-specific charges.
- Licenses assigned to inactive users or people who need only limited access, as well as duplicate licenses across services.
- Commitment-related obligations, legacy application compatibility work, and the cost of moving data or changing systems.
Microsoft’s enterprise pricing page displays Enterprise Mobility + Security E3 at $10.60 per user per month paid yearly as a separate service signal. Treat it, like the other add-on figures, as a dated U.S. listing rather than a universal quote.

Many commercial Microsoft prices are displayed as a per-user monthly rate paid yearly. That is not necessarily a flexible month-to-month subscription multiplied by 12. Microsoft says business customers may be billed monthly or annually depending on the selected service, and annual subscriptions auto-renew; check the terms shown for the actual product and purchase route.
Annual billing can display a lower effective monthly rate, but it ties the buyer to the applicable commitment and renewal terms. Monthly billing can be useful for seasonal staffing, pilots, short projects, or uncertain headcount, even where the effective rate is higher. Compare the 12-month cash commitment, cancellation rules, auto-renewal date, and invoice total—not just the number followed by “per month.” Taxes, currency conversion, reseller pricing, education or nonprofit eligibility, government terms, and enterprise agreements can also affect the final bill.
Calculate a realistic cost for your household or organization
Consumer subscription
Annual cost = advertised annual plan price + applicable tax. For Family, divide the annual price by the number of people who actually use it to estimate household cost per active user. At $129.99 a year, two active users work out to about $65 each annually; six work out to about $21.67 each. This is an arithmetic illustration, not Microsoft’s advertised per-user rate.

Business licenses
Annual license cost = licensed users × monthly price × 12 + add-ons + services + taxes. At the displayed Business Premium rate, 25 users × $22 × 12 equals $6,600 a year before tax and add-ons.
For an illustration of selective Copilot licensing, assume 25 users receive Business Premium at $22 per user per month and 10 receive the displayed $32 Business Premium with Copilot package. The annual total would be 15 × $22 × 12 + 10 × $32 × 12 = $6,600. This assumes those displayed packages apply to the buyer and is not a quote; confirm current package terms and whether the prices are comparable for the intended purchase.
Enterprise licenses
For enterprise budgeting, add the cost of base licenses, Copilot, Teams or telephony, security and compliance add-ons, storage, implementation and support, and taxes. Using only the displayed annual-billing price signals:
- 100 Office 365 E1 users × $10 × 12 = $12,000 a year before tax and add-ons.
- 100 Microsoft 365 E3 users × $36 × 12 = $43,200 a year before tax and add-ons.
- 100 Office 365 E5 users × $41 × 12 = $49,200 a year before tax and add-ons.
These examples show arithmetic, not which license is the least expensive way to meet a particular organization’s requirements.
A practical way to choose a plan
- Decide whether this is personal or organizational use. An individual or household can compare consumer Microsoft 365 with Office Home 2024. A company should evaluate business or enterprise licensing rather than relying on a household plan.
- Count actual users. Family covers people in a household; business and enterprise costs usually scale by licensed user. Do not price a business plan as one flat company fee.
- Decide whether installed desktop apps are required. If web and mobile apps are sufficient, compare lower-cost options such as E1 or applicable basic business offerings. E1 is not the full installed desktop suite.
- Identify business email and administration needs. If users need organizational email, centralized accounts, or collaboration administration, compare the business plans against those requirements.
- Map security and compliance requirements. Device management, identity controls, threat protection, and compliance needs may favor a broader Microsoft 365 bundle over separate purchases.
- License AI selectively. Identify the employees who have a clear Copilot use case, then budget the underlying eligible license and the Copilot package or add-on that applies to them.
- Check Teams and calling separately. Confirm whether Teams is included in the selected variant and whether phone service or conferencing requires separate components.
- Get the final terms in writing. Verify current regional price, billing commitment, renewal and cancellation terms, taxes, user limits, and any agreement-specific quote before approving a budget.
Alternatives if Microsoft 365 does not fit
For organizations that work mainly in a browser, Google Workspace is an alternative built around Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Meet. Zoho Workplace may suit cost-conscious small businesses already using Zoho services. LibreOffice avoids a recurring Microsoft subscription, but is a weaker fit when an organization depends on Microsoft-native collaboration, Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, enterprise identity, or strict document fidelity. Compare current prices and required features directly; no alternative price is established here.
