Choose a cloud networking certification for the platform and job you want—not because one credential is universally “best.” If your networking fundamentals are weak, start with Cisco CCNA. For a provider-specific path, choose AZ-700 for Azure networking, Professional Cloud Network Engineer for Google Cloud networking, or AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate for broader AWS operations. AWS Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) is a deadline-driven exception: its last testing date is August 25, 2026.

Decide whether you need foundations or cloud specialization
Cloud networking is not one interchangeable skill. A cloud-provider exam tests how that platform implements virtual networks, routing, security, private access, load balancing, and connectivity. A networking foundation credential tests transferable concepts that still matter when hardware is abstracted: IP addressing, subnetting, routing, DNS, transport, segmentation, and troubleshooting.
Start with CCNA if core networking is the gap
Cisco describes CCNA as a single-exam associate credential covering foundational networking skills. Its scope includes network implementation and administration, with security and automation topics. The CCNA training outline provides further detail. This is a sensible foundation for a systems administrator, new network engineer, or cloud engineer who cannot yet confidently explain a route, a DNS failure, or a packet’s path.

#1 Best Overall
Skip the foundation step if you already have it
A network engineer with substantial routing and troubleshooting experience may gain more from a credential tied to the employer’s cloud platform. Likewise, a cloud architect who mainly designs application systems may need an architecture or operations path rather than a network-specialist exam.
Choose AZ-700 for Azure network engineering
Microsoft’s Azure Network Engineer Associate is aimed at intermediate network-engineer work. The AZ-700 study guide covers core network infrastructure, hybrid connectivity, application delivery, private access to Azure services, network security, routing, load balancing, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
What to know before booking
- The exam is AZ-700, Designing and Implementing Microsoft Azure Networking Solutions, and is listed as 100 minutes.
- Microsoft’s U.S. price signal is $83 USD; price varies by country or region. Confirm the amount shown for your testing location before paying.
- A passing score is 700 or greater. The study guide’s skills-measured date is July 27, 2026, so check the current guide rather than relying on an older course.
- The credential renews every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn; see Microsoft’s renewal page.
Who should choose it—and who should not
AZ-700 makes sense when Azure is central to the target job, especially where work includes ExpressRoute, Azure VPN, Virtual WAN, Private Link, load balancing, or Azure network security. It is a poor match for an AWS- or Google-first role, for someone without basic IP, DNS, routing, and security knowledge, or for someone seeking broad cloud operations rather than networking. The annual renewal is also a real maintenance commitment.
Choose Google Professional Cloud Network Engineer for Google Cloud networking
Google’s Professional Cloud Network Engineer directly tests Google Cloud network work: planning and implementing VPCs, configuring managed network services, building hybrid and multicloud connectivity, operating and troubleshooting networks, and managing network security.

Exam facts and readiness
- The exam lasts two hours and contains 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions.
- Registration is $200 plus applicable tax. Google offers online-proctored and onsite-proctored delivery.
- There are no formal prerequisites, but that is an eligibility rule, not a readiness claim. The exam is professional-level; practical familiarity with Google Cloud networking is a sensible preparation baseline.
- Professional Google Cloud certifications are valid for two years, according to Google’s certification FAQs.
It is a strong fit if the target environment uses Google Cloud VPCs, Cloud Interconnect, Cloud VPN, Private Service Connect, Cloud Load Balancing, or Google Cloud network security. If the goal is broader entry-level Google Cloud engineering rather than networking specialization, Google also has the Associate Cloud Engineer credential.
Choose an AWS path with the retirement date in view
ANS-C01: only a near-term option for prepared candidates
AWS Advanced Networking – Specialty covers advanced AWS and hybrid network design, implementation, operations, automation, and security. AWS describes an experienced candidate profile in its ANS-C01 exam guide. The exam costs $300, lasts 170 minutes, and has 65 questions, but its final testing date is August 25, 2026, according to the AWS certification page.
If you are already prepared and can sit the exam before that date, it may still suit an employer-recognized credential goal. Someone starting from zero should not compress an advanced study plan into the deadline. AWS says credentials earned before retirement remain active for the normal three-year validity period; AWS will not issue a new version of this exam after retirement.
CloudOps Engineer – Associate: the broader current AWS option
AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate is the more appropriate current AWS choice for many cloud-operations professionals. It covers deployment and operation of workloads, monitoring, security controls, networking concepts, business continuity, and cost and performance optimization. AWS lists a 130-minute exam with 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions, a $150 price, about one year of relevant AWS workload deployment and operations experience as the intended background, and three-year validity.
CloudOps is not a replacement for ANS-C01’s depth. Choose it for operations, cloud support, systems integration, or platform roles where networking is important but not the whole job—not as proof of advanced network architecture expertise.

Use Cisco for enterprise networking and hybrid connectivity
Cloud networks connect to corporate WANs, data centers, DNS, and security boundaries. For roles that include routers, switches, SD-WAN, enterprise WAN, or hybrid interconnects, Cisco credentials can be more relevant than a cloud-only exam.
CCNA for transferable fundamentals
CCNA is useful for building the routing, switching, addressing, and troubleshooting knowledge that transfers across cloud providers. It is not a substitute for learning a provider’s specific services, but it can expose gaps that memorizing cloud product names will not fix.
CCNP Enterprise cloud connectivity for experienced engineers
Cisco’s Designing and Implementing Cloud Connectivity exam earns the Cisco Certified Specialist – Enterprise Cloud Connectivity credential and can count as a concentration exam toward CCNP Enterprise. Cisco lists professional-level core exams at $400 on its exam pricing page; the complete CCNP path also requires the applicable concentration exam. Confirm both current exam requirements and pricing before budgeting.
Best Value
Match the credential to the work you want
- Network engineer: prioritize routing, addressing, VPNs, dedicated connections, and troubleshooting; use CCNA for a foundation or a cloud-specific exam for the platform you operate.
- Cloud network engineer: focus on VPC/VNet design, private access, cloud routing, load balancing, and network security in the employer’s provider.
- Cloud operations: prioritize monitoring, incident response, automation, reliability, cost, and networking; AWS CloudOps is a broader option for AWS roles.
- Cloud architect: study connectivity patterns, identity boundaries, resilience, governance, and trade-offs; a specialist network exam may be unnecessary if networking is not the core responsibility.
- Security engineer: emphasize segmentation, firewalls, private access, traffic inspection, logging, and controls.
- DevOps or platform engineer: emphasize infrastructure as code, service networking, deployment pipelines, and observability alongside network fundamentals.
For multicloud consulting, build strong transferable networking skills and go deep on one primary platform first. A collection of introductory provider credentials does not demonstrate production-level multicloud connectivity.
Check readiness with a small practical lab
Before spending on an exam attempt, see whether you can explain and troubleshoot the packet path in the platform you plan to certify on. Readiness means more than recognizing service names.
- Calculate CIDR ranges, select routes, and identify overlapping address space.
- Trace DNS resolution, including private DNS behavior.
- Explain stateful versus stateless filtering and how security groups or network security groups affect traffic.
- Distinguish public from private routes, and describe VPN versus dedicated private connectivity.
- Identify the relevant load-balancing layer, private endpoint behavior, availability boundaries, and logging tools.
- Use flow logs or monitoring data to diagnose a broken connection and explain the likely cause.
A useful project is a segmented virtual network with public and private subnets, controlled outbound access, a private service endpoint, load balancing, and network logging. Add a VPN or simulated hybrid link, deliberately break one connection, then write down the packet path and root cause. This is evidence of lab competence, not proof of production experience.
Prepare without paying for more than you need
- Read the current official exam guide. Confirm the exam code, skills measured, delivery options, and retirement or update notices before scheduling.
- Use free official material first. Start with Microsoft Learn, Google’s certification preparation links, AWS Skill Builder at skillbuilder.aws, or Cisco’s official training outline.
- Build a lab around the actual objectives. Keep track of cloud usage charges and tear down resources when you finish; certification preparation can otherwise create avoidable costs.
- Use practice questions to find gaps, not to replace learning. Investigate why a route, DNS query, or policy behaves a certain way instead of memorizing answers.
- Check reimbursement and renewal costs. The exam fee is only part of the expense: training, practice materials, lab usage, retakes, work time, and future renewal all matter.
- Verify price and exam availability at checkout. Microsoft prices vary by region, Google adds applicable tax, and AWS directs candidates to regional pricing details.
Make the choice by platform, experience, and renewal appetite
- Weak networking fundamentals: CCNA, then specialize on the cloud platform used in your target role.
- Azure network role: AZ-700, provided you can commit to annual renewal.
- Google Cloud network role: Professional Cloud Network Engineer, after building practical Google Cloud network experience.
- AWS operations role: CloudOps Engineer – Associate for a broad, current operations credential.
- Experienced AWS specialist ready before August 25, 2026: consider ANS-C01 only if the time and employer value make the deadline worthwhile.
- Cisco-heavy hybrid network role: CCNA for fundamentals or CCNP Enterprise cloud connectivity for experienced enterprise engineers.
Certifications can structure learning and signal familiarity with an exam’s subject matter, but they do not establish that someone has managed a production outage, repaired a BGP incident, untangled a DNS delegation, remediated overlapping CIDRs, or assessed egress-cost consequences. Match the credential to a real job description and pair it with practical work.
