Microsoft’s June 29, 2023 announcement added AI-generated buying guides, review summaries and Price Match assistance to Bing and Edge. The tools later expanded into a broader Copilot shopping experience with product comparisons, price history and alerts. They can speed up research, but they do not guarantee the lowest price, verify every review or override a retailer’s policies.
What Microsoft announced in 2023
The original announcement concerned research and price-assistance features—not an AI system that autonomously buys products. Microsoft’s shopping tools were reported on June 29, 2023, and subsequent Copilot announcements expanded the workflow. TechCrunch’s announcement coverage describes the initial features.
| Feature | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| AI buying guides | Organizes product information, specifications and purchase options in response to broad shopping queries. | A guide is a research aid, not independent product testing or a guarantee that every relevant product is included. |
| Review summaries | Condenses recurring themes from available online product reviews. | A summary can miss recent problems, variant-specific feedback or polarized experiences. |
| Price Match assistance | Helps a shopper seek a post-purchase price adjustment when a product’s price falls. | The retailer’s policy controls eligibility, deadlines, exclusions and required proof; Microsoft does not guarantee or pay the difference. |
Microsoft said review summaries were widely available by November 13, 2023. Its Edge holiday update also described Copilot in Microsoft Shopping as rolling out.
How Copilot shopping works
Microsoft subsequently described Copilot in Microsoft Shopping as a conversational shopping assistant accessible through Bing or Edge. Instead of entering only a model number, a shopper can describe a need, budget or intended use; Copilot may ask follow-up questions and return tailored product suggestions. Microsoft’s September 2023 Copilot announcement outlined that approach. Microsoft also discussed image-based product matching as a later rollout in its Edge announcement.

- Start with a specific need, such as a laptop for travel within a stated budget, rather than asking for a vague “best” product.
- Answer any follow-up questions about use, preferences or price range.
- Compare the suggested products’ exact models and configurations, then open the original retailer listings.
- Check the final delivered cost and terms on the retailer’s checkout page before buying.
What shopping features Microsoft describes now
Microsoft’s current consumer documentation describes a more consolidated Copilot shopping workflow. Depending on the product and availability, it can show product options, stores, review information, online price history and price alerts. Microsoft’s Copilot shopping support page explains those features. Its Edge shopping page also advertises price comparison, coupons, cashback, product insights and Copilot-assisted research.
Edge shopping capabilities are being centralized into Copilot in Edge, according to Microsoft’s support notice about changes to shopping in Edge. That means older descriptions of separate shopping panels or blue tags may not match the interface a user sees today. Availability and labels can vary by region, device, account, Edge version and retailer. Microsoft’s historical route through Bing Shopping, bing.com/shop/ai, should be treated as a previous access path, not a guaranteed current menu.

Bing or Edge: where to start
- Bing: Use search or its shopping experience to discover products and begin a conversational comparison.
- Edge: On supported retailer pages, open Copilot or the shopping assistance surfaced by the browser to inspect product insights and available price information.
For either route, search for a product or category, then look for Copilot, Shopping, product insights, price history or comparison options. The exact control may differ. Cashback or personalized features may have separate eligibility or account requirements; check the terms shown in your own experience.
How to check whether a deal is real
Price history and comparison results are useful signals, not a complete record of every seller or transaction. A graph or low listing may refer to a different variant, seller, pack size or condition. Before treating two prices as comparable, check:

For a Price Match request, read the retailer’s own policy before relying on an assistant. Policies may exclude marketplace sellers, clearance or flash-sale prices, coupons, membership-only offers, shipping differences, out-of-stock competitors and refurbished goods. Microsoft’s tool can help with a request; it cannot make a retailer honor one.
How much to trust AI summaries and recommendations
Use a review summary to decide what to investigate, not as proof that a product performs well. Summaries may overemphasize repeated minor complaints, blur feedback across variants, or fail to reflect a recent firmware or manufacturing change. Check the underlying reviews—especially recent one-, three- and five-star reviews—and confirm technical specifications on the manufacturer’s page.

Likewise, a Copilot recommendation is generated from the request and information available to the service; it is not evidence of independent testing or an endorsement. Retailer links, cashback and product placement can affect the shopping experience. For a major purchase, compare independent testing and seller terms rather than relying on ranking alone.
Microsoft has promoted savings figures for Edge, including more than $4 billion in savings offered over a prior 12-month period and an average potential savings figure above $400 per year. Those are Microsoft’s own promotional claims, not independent measurements of what a typical shopper will save; results depend on eligibility, offers and buying habits. See Microsoft’s 2023 announcement and its 2024 Edge tools post.

What changed after the launch
The title’s “new tools” refers to a 2023 launch, not a new 2026 release. Bing Chat and related shopping features were subsequently presented under Copilot branding; Microsoft broadened the experience with conversational recommendations and price-related tools, and Edge shopping functions have been moving into Copilot in Edge. The June 2023 feature names and access instructions should therefore be read as launch history, not a definitive guide to every current interface.
For privacy-sensitive shoppers, review Microsoft’s current account and browser privacy settings before using personalized shopping features. The exact data handling and controls depend on the service and settings in use.
