Squarespace Email Campaigns lets you collect subscribers, build branded marketing emails, send newsletters, and create triggered automations from the same platform as your website. To send a reliable first campaign, build a permission-based mailing list, verify your sender details, create and test the email, then choose the right recipients and schedule or send it. Plan around total monthly sends—not campaign count—because each delivery to a subscriber uses part of your allowance.

What Squarespace Email Campaigns does

Email Campaigns is Squarespace’s marketing-email product for newsletters, promotions, product announcements, blog-post emails, welcome messages, and follow-ups. It has two main sending types:

  • Blast campaigns are one-off emails sent to selected mailing lists, either immediately or at a scheduled time.
  • Automations are triggered messages sent after a subscriber action, form submission, or purchase.

Marketing campaigns are separate from default transactional or order notifications, such as purchase confirmations. Email Campaigns is also a separate subscription from a Squarespace website plan; domains, Google Workspace, and Acuity Scheduling may be billed separately too. See Squarespace’s plan guidance.

What to prepare before your first send

You need a mailing list, sender details, an email draft, and permission from the people you plan to contact. Do not import purchased, scraped, or otherwise unsolicited addresses. Email requirements differ according to the sender’s and recipient’s locations and the type of message; rules may include CAN-SPAM in the United States, CASL in Canada, and PECR in the United Kingdom. Squarespace’s mailing-list guidance covers its requirements, but it is not a substitute for legal advice.

Before sending, verify your sender email and, preferably, your custom domain. Use a consistent address associated with your business or organization. Add your physical mailing address where required, and make sure the campaign footer includes its unsubscribe controls. Verification can help establish sender identity, but it cannot guarantee inbox placement.

Create a mailing list

  1. In the Contacts area, open Lists & Segments.
  2. Select Create Mailing List and give the list a clear name.
  3. Choose Add Subscribers to enter people individually or import a CSV file.
  4. For ongoing signups, connect collection points such as newsletter blocks, promotional pop-ups, cover pages, or checkout subscription options.

Squarespace allows up to 20 mailing lists. It does not state a subscriber cap for a list, but the number of contacts you store is different from the number of emails you can send under a monthly allowance. For a migration, export only contacts you have permission to email and import them by CSV. An address that has unsubscribed will not be resubscribed just because it is imported into the same list again.

Depending on the signup source and confirmation settings, a person may need to click a confirmation link before being added as a subscriber. A form submission, a stored contact, a confirmed subscriber, and a person eligible for marketing email are not necessarily the same thing. Check the contact’s status before assuming they will receive a campaign.

Create and compose a campaign

  1. Open the Email Campaigns dashboard and click Create.
  2. Browse template categories or choose All, preview a design, then select Use This Template.
  3. Add and arrange the content sections you need. The editor uses vertically stacked sections, and changes to a draft autosave.
  4. Review the subject line and preview text, then save the draft for testing and recipient selection.

You can also turn a blog post into a campaign or use Squarespace AI to produce a first draft. Treat AI output as an editable starting point: verify factual claims, links, prices, accessibility, personalization, and tone yourself. A campaign can contain up to 40 sections, including its built-in header and footer. The campaign-building guide describes templates, drafts, and creation options.

Give each element a job

  • Subject line: State the main reason to open the email.
  • Preview text: Add useful context that complements the subject rather than repeating it.
  • Header: Make the sender recognizable with branding.
  • Body sections: Present the announcement, offer, image, product, or other information in a readable order.
  • Buttons: Give each major section a clear next action.
  • Footer: Include business identity, any required address, and unsubscribe controls.

A simple first email can have a one-sentence reason for writing, a headline or image, a short explanation of the benefit or update, one primary call to action, and optional secondary content. Avoid combining unrelated announcements if one clear objective would serve readers better.

Choose recipients, test, and send or schedule

  1. Open Drafts and select the pencil icon for the campaign.
  2. Add a subject line and preview text.
  3. Select Unique Recipients, then choose one or more mailing lists.
  4. Review the campaign and send a test to yourself and another mailbox.
  5. Choose to send immediately or schedule the campaign.

If the same email address appears on multiple selected lists, Squarespace sends that person one copy, not one per list. The audience still affects send usage. Keep lists for genuinely distinct audiences instead of duplicating lists as a substitute for segmentation. Campaigns cannot be resent selectively to individual subscribers. For recipient selection and scheduling details, see Squarespace’s sending guide.

A scheduled send follows the time zone of the device used to schedule it. Check that device’s time-zone setting before confirming the send time.

Pre-send checklist

  • Confirm the sender name and address, and verify the sender email and custom domain where applicable.
  • Check the subject, preview text, every link, and the message on a mobile screen.
  • Add appropriate alternative text to images where available.
  • Check that the selected lists and approximate recipient count are correct.
  • Confirm the campaign fits the remaining monthly send allowance.
  • Check required business-address and unsubscribe information.
  • Verify any discount, product, event, date, or price stated in the email.

Use automations for triggered messages

Choose an automation when a message should follow an action, rather than go to a list at a specific time. Current automation categories include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Subscriber activity: A welcome message after someone subscribes to a mailing list.
  • Form response: A message after someone submits a form.
  • Customer activity: A message after someone purchases a store product or digital product, including a free product.

Examples include a welcome email, a short onboarding sequence, a form-submission acknowledgement, a post-purchase recommendation, or a follow-up after a free digital-product download. If the requirement is “send this email to this list on Tuesday,” use a scheduled blast instead. Automations consume monthly sends, and a subscriber may need to confirm before receiving one. Current Email Campaigns plans support automations, but some legacy plans may not. They cannot be edited or managed in the Squarespace app. See the automation guide.

Understand monthly sending limits and billing

Current Email Campaigns plans are governed by monthly email-send volume, not by how many campaigns you create. One campaign to 100 people uses 100 sends; a second campaign to the same people uses another 100. The basic estimate is:

Monthly sends required = recipients per send × number of planned sends

  • 250 subscribers receiving two newsletters require 500 sends.
  • 1,000 subscribers receiving four newsletters require 4,000 sends.
  • A welcome automation delivered to 300 new subscribers uses 300 sends.

The public product page lists monthly tiers from 500 sends through 5,000, 10,000, 25,000, 50,000, 100,000, 150,000, 250,000, 350,000, and 500,000. Contacts are described as unlimited; sending is still constrained by the chosen tier. The page’s live pricing selector is the place to check current prices and billing options, because the available documentation does not establish stable text prices. See Squarespace Email Marketing and its pricing and billing guide.

Website subscribers can build lists and drafts and send up to three trial blast campaigns. After the trial allowance, ongoing sending requires an Email Campaigns plan. The 500-send plan retains “Powered by Squarespace” branding; the billing guide says it can be removed on plans above that tier. Billing can be monthly or annual, while usage resets monthly according to the subscription start date. If you reach the limit, wait for the usage period to reset or upgrade.

If an Email Campaigns subscription expires or is cancelled, drafts and mailing lists remain, but sending is unavailable. Legacy plans may have different limits and may not include automations. Check the plan shown in your Squarespace billing area before changing it: Squarespace says a move from a legacy plan to a current plan, or cancellation, cannot be reversed by returning to the old plan.

Review campaign results

After sending, open the campaign’s analytics in Email Campaigns and use the metrics shown there to assess delivery and reader response. Review available delivery, engagement, unsubscribe, and link-performance information without assuming every account or campaign displays the same measures. Use the results to identify a practical next step—for example, revising unclear copy or checking whether the main link is prominent. Do not treat opens or clicks as proof of sales without separate attribution data.

Troubleshoot common sending problems

The sender address or domain looks wrong

Gmail or Yahoo sender addresses can trigger a custom sending address, and an unverified domain may display “via squarespace-mail.com,” depending on the plan and sender setup. Verify the sender email, confirm domain ownership and DNS records in Squarespace, and use a consistent branded address. If verification or sending status remains unresolved, contact Squarespace support. Verification improves sender identity signals but does not assure delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A subscriber says they did not receive the email

Check whether the person confirmed their subscription and is eligible for marketing email, whether the address is correct, and whether the message bounced or landed in spam. Review the selected list and campaign’s recipient count. Keep only contacts with valid permission, and review bounced, unsubscribed, and inactive records before a later send.

The campaign will not send

Check the monthly usage allowance, recipient selection, and sender verification. If the account has reached its cap, sending must wait for the reset or an upgrade. If an automation option is missing, verify whether the account has a legacy plan; current-plan instructions may not apply to it.

The scheduled campaign went at an unexpected time

Check the time zone configured on the device used to schedule the email. The scheduled time follows that device setting.

Should you use Squarespace or Mailchimp?

Squarespace is a practical choice when your website already runs there and you value a shared visual system, straightforward campaign creation, and product or blog content connected to the site. Mailchimp may be worth evaluating if your operation depends on broader integrations, more granular campaign workflows, or more sophisticated audience operations. Those needs vary by plan and account, so compare the current capabilities against your actual workflow rather than assuming a platform feature from its name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mailchimp adds another account and platform, and may require you to manage audience synchronization or integration. Squarespace documents a Mailchimp integration and RSS-to-email options; check the current requirements for your site plan before migrating. Mailchimp’s pricing page varies by audience and sending configuration, so compare the live plan for your contact count and expected sends rather than relying on an old headline price.

Consider another email platform if complex branching, advanced segmentation, custom HTML, extensive integrations, or detailed deliverability controls are essential to your program. Confirm each provider’s current features, limits, and costs before moving. If you want to stay with Squarespace but need setup or migration help, Squarespace points users to vetted Squarespace Experts; providers set their own scope and fees.
