Re:

iPhone Warranty: Is Apple’s Coverage Really Two Years?

Apple’s standard U.S. iPhone warranty usually lasts one year. Here’s what it covers, when AppleCare+ or consumer law may add protection, and how to check your status.

In the United States, Apple’s standard iPhone limited warranty is normally one year from the original retail purchase date—not two. The two-year figure may refer to a 24-month AppleCare+ plan, a consumer-law guarantee in some countries, or a separate retailer or insurance plan. Which protection applies depends on where and how you bought the iPhone.

Apple’s warranty primarily covers defects in materials and workmanship during normal use. It does not generally cover drops, liquid damage, ordinary battery aging, theft, or loss. Check your serial-number coverage, but do not treat an “expired” status as a complete ruling on any legal rights you may have.

Does an iPhone come with a two-year warranty?

For a typical iPhone bought in the United States, Apple’s written limited warranty lasts one year from the original retail purchase date. Apple describes it as a one-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. The warranty is a promise from Apple; it is distinct from consumer-law rights and paid service plans. Apple’s U.S. warranty terms

  • Another plan: A carrier, retailer, card issuer, or insurer may provide separate protection. Its duration and covered events depend on that provider’s contract.

Country of purchase matters, and Apple may restrict warranty service to the country where the iPhone was originally sold. International service is not guaranteed to be identical. Apple’s U.S. warranty terms

What Apple’s standard warranty covers

The U.S. limited warranty applies to Apple-branded iPhone hardware and Apple-branded accessories included in the original packaging. It covers defects in materials and workmanship when the device is used normally and in accordance with Apple’s published guidelines. A component failure may qualify, but the fact that a part stopped working does not by itself establish that the cause is a covered defect.

Depending on its assessment and the warranty terms, Apple may repair the iPhone, replace it with the same or a substantially similar product, or refund the purchase price. Apple’s U.S. warranty terms

Examples that may qualify

  • A display, camera, button, speaker, microphone, charging port, or logic board fails because of a defect during normal use.
  • A battery fails because of a manufacturing defect rather than ordinary chemical aging.
  • The phone stops functioning without evidence that an accident, external cause, misuse, or unauthorized service caused the problem.

What the standard warranty does not cover

A warranty is primarily protection against defects—not a promise that Apple will repair every failure free of charge. Apple’s U.S. warranty excludes or generally does not cover the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Drops and cracked screens: Accidental damage, including cracked glass and dents, is not a standard-warranty claim.
  • Liquid damage: The written warranty excludes damage caused by liquid contact. Water resistance is not a warranty against water damage, and resistance can diminish with wear, impact, repairs, or age. Internal corrosion or a liquid-contact indicator may affect service eligibility.
  • Theft or loss: The standard warranty is not theft or loss insurance.
  • Ordinary wear: Scratches, dents, and other cosmetic damage are generally excluded unless they result from a covered defect. Normal wear and tear and ordinary battery aging are also excluded.
  • External causes or misuse: Abuse, misuse, fire, earthquakes, and other external causes are excluded.
  • Unauthorized service or modifications: Apple excludes damage caused by service performed outside Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as damage caused by unauthorized modifications or nonconforming third-party components. This does not mean that merely having a third-party repair automatically eliminates every legal right.
  • Software: Software, even when supplied with or sold alongside the hardware, is not covered by the hardware warranty.

Apple’s U.S. warranty terms set out the exclusions. If the cause of a failure is disputed, ask what the service assessment found rather than assuming either that the repair must be covered or that a previous repair ends all possible rights.

Battery problems: defect or aging?

Battery capacity normally declines with use, so ordinary depletion is generally not covered by the standard warranty. A battery that fails because of a defect may be treated differently. Apple assesses the particular device; do not assume a universal battery-health percentage automatically guarantees warranty replacement. AppleCare+ battery service is governed by that plan’s terms, not by the standard warranty alone. Apple’s U.S. warranty terms

How AppleCare+ differs from the standard warranty

AppleCare+ is paid supplemental coverage. Depending on the plan and device, it can add hardware service, technical support, and accidental-damage service. It does not make every repair free: service fees or deductibles may apply, and exclusions and other conditions remain. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is a separate option where available. AppleCare information and terms

Protection Main purpose What to check
Apple limited warranty Defects in materials and workmanship under normal use Warranty period, purchase date, and the cause of the failure
Consumer-law guarantee Legal obligations when goods fail to conform to local law Country, seller, applicable time limits, proof rules, and remedies
AppleCare+ Paid Apple service benefits, including accidental-damage service under plan terms Plan term, service fees, exclusions, and claim rules
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss AppleCare+ benefits plus specified theft-or-loss claims Eligibility, claim conditions, and applicable fees
Retailer, carrier, insurance, or card benefit Separate commercial protection, if included in the contract Covered events, deductibles, exclusions, claim deadlines, and overlap with other cover

For U.S. iPhones, AppleCare+ may be sold as a fixed-term 24-month plan or as recurring coverage, subject to then-current terms and availability. The fixed-term plan’s duration does not mean accidental-damage repairs have no out-of-pocket cost. Apple says its U.S. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss version allows up to two theft-or-loss claims every 12 months per covered device, subject to the applicable plan terms. Claims may require Find My to have been enabled, the device to remain associated with your Apple Account, and compliance with Apple’s claims process; check the current terms before enrolling or filing. AppleCare One is a multi-device option for eligible products, rather than the default choice for a single iPhone. Apple describes it as covering up to three devices, with the option to add more; it includes benefits of AppleCare+ for eligible devices. Apple also describes up to three total theft-or-loss incidents every 12 months for eligible iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch coverage. Price is only one part of the decision

As a dated U.S. example, Apple’s purchase page showed AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for iPhone 17 at $11.99 per month or $119.99 per year on August 18, 2026. The same page showed AppleCare One at $19.99 per month for up to three eligible devices, with additional devices listed at $5.99 per month each. Apple’s U.S. disclosure document lists model-specific prices for AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, including monthly, annual, and 24-month options for some models. Consumer rights can outlast Apple’s written warranty

In the United States, implied warranties may apply under state law even when a product also has a written warranty. Their scope, duration, and limits vary, and some states restrict disclaimers. The Federal Trade Commission explains that implied warranties can sometimes last longer than a written warranty. Whether a particular iPhone problem gives you a claim depends on the state, seller, purchase, and facts; a one-year Apple warranty does not automatically mean every legal remedy ends at one year. In the EU, the general two-year legal guarantee is typically pursued against the seller, not simply through Apple’s voluntary worldwide warranty. The exact remedy and evidence rules can depend on national law. Contact the retailer that sold the phone if you believe the fault is a legal conformity issue. EU guidance on guarantees

Apple’s coverage checker is designed to show Apple limited-warranty or AppleCare coverage, but it may not reflect every right under consumer-protection law. Apple also says the recorded estimated purchase date can be wrong, particularly when a phone was bought from an authorized reseller. In California and some other jurisdictions, warranty time may be extended by whole days the phone was out of your possession for warranty repairs, subject to applicable rules and documentation. How to check your iPhone coverage

  1. Open Apple’s coverage checker and select the appropriate country or region.
  2. Enter the iPhone’s serial number and complete any verification Apple requests.
  3. Review whether it lists limited-warranty coverage, AppleCare coverage, an expired plan, or eligibility for additional coverage or service.
  4. If the purchase or expiration date looks wrong, locate the original sales receipt and contact Apple Support or use its purchase-date update process. Keep proof of purchase and service records. Apple coverage information

If you have a used or refurbished phone, do not assume the date you bought it from its current owner starts a new Apple warranty period. Check the serial number and the device’s purchase and service documentation; coverage depends on the phone’s status and applicable terms.

What to do if Apple says coverage has expired

  1. Verify the purchase date. Compare Apple’s record with the original receipt. Ask Apple to correct an inaccurate estimated purchase date if needed. Apple coverage information
  2. Identify the seller and purchase jurisdiction. Your next step may depend on where you bought the phone and whether it was new, refurbished, or used. For a consumer-law claim, the seller may be the responsible party.
  3. Request an assessment. Ask Apple or an authorized service provider to diagnose the fault and explain whether the finding was a defect, accidental damage, liquid contact, or another excluded cause. Keep the assessment and any written estimate.
  4. Check applicable legal rights. U.S. implied-warranty protections vary by state; EU consumers can review the legal guarantee and approach the seller. FTC guidance EU guidance
  5. Review other protection separately. Check any retailer, carrier, insurance, or credit-card terms for deadlines, claim requirements, deductibles, and exclusions.
  6. Keep a record. Save receipts, photos, repair records, diagnostic findings, and correspondence. An “expired” label in Apple’s system is a service-coverage status, not by itself a decision on every possible claim.

Prepare your iPhone before service

Apple’s warranty terms describe carry-in service at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider, mail-in service where Apple determines it is available, and do-it-yourself parts service where offered. Apple may request proof of purchase, diagnostic information, or that you follow its service procedures. Warranty service may be limited to the country where the iPhone was originally sold. • Back up the iPhone before handing it over. Apple warns that service may involve deletion or reformatting of data.
  • Have the phone, serial number, and proof of purchase available, along with AppleCare documentation if applicable.
  • Be ready to describe when the problem started and what happened before it began.
  • Follow Apple’s instructions for preparing the device, including any steps involving Find My or your Apple Account.

Apple’s warranty terms explain service options and preparation requirements; follow the current instructions for your specific service appointment.

Is AppleCare+ worth the cost?

AppleCare+ is a way to pay for defined service benefits and reduce uncertainty, not a universal bargain. Compare the plan cost over the time you expect to own the phone with the applicable service fees and the repair or replacement costs you would otherwise have to absorb. For theft-and-loss coverage, include the claim conditions as well as the premium.

It may fit your situation if

  • You have a history of dropping or damaging phones, or use the iPhone in a high-risk environment.
  • An unexpected major repair or replacement would be difficult to pay for.
  • You want Apple’s service channel and will keep the phone beyond the standard warranty period.
  • You want theft-and-loss benefits and can meet the plan’s eligibility and claim requirements.

It may be a weaker fit if

  • You have a low damage history, use a protective case, and can comfortably cover a repair yourself.
  • You already have overlapping coverage, and the terms, deductibles, and exclusions make another plan poor value.
  • You are considering AppleCare One for only one device and would not use its multi-device coverage.
  • You would pay for theft-and-loss protection but are unlikely to meet its requirements or would not find the benefit worth the cost.

For a single iPhone, compare standard AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, any relevant existing policy, and setting aside the premium yourself. For a household with several eligible Apple devices, compare AppleCare One’s actual price and device eligibility with separate plans. Do not pay for a plan on the assumption that it is necessary for basic coverage of manufacturing defects during Apple’s standard warranty term.
