AI can help you organize documents, understand tax questions and work through tax software, but a general-purpose chatbot is not a tax filing system. For a 2025 federal return filed during the 2026 filing season, use AI as a supervised assistant: enter verified information in legitimate tax software, review the completed forms yourself and confirm that the IRS accepts the return.
What does it mean to file taxes using AI?
“AI tax filing” can describe several different things. The distinction matters because an assistant that explains a form does not necessarily prepare a complete return or transmit it to the IRS.
AI built into tax-preparation software
Some tax products use AI to explain terminology, guide an interview, locate a place to enter information, extract details from documents or flag missing fields. The software’s tax-form support and e-file capability matter more than the AI label. IRS e-file software must pass the agency’s Modernized e-File Assurance Testing, but that does not mean every product supports every form or situation. The IRS explains its software approval process.
A general-purpose chatbot
A chatbot can help explain a tax term, make a checklist or suggest questions to ask a professional. It ordinarily does not authenticate you with the IRS, transmit a valid return through the IRS e-file system, confirm that every required schedule is included or take responsibility for the accuracy of your filing. Treat a chatbot as a research and organization aid, not the system of record for your return.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service cautions that generative AI tax assistants can struggle with complex rules and unusual circumstances. Use their answers as prompts for further checking, not authoritative advice. Read the Taxpayer Advocate Service’s guidance on AI-generated tax advice. The IRS also says taxpayers remain responsible for the accuracy of a return, even when someone else prepares it. See IRS Topic No. 254.
AI for document organization
AI tools may classify or summarize W-2s, 1099s, mortgage-interest statements, receipts or brokerage records. That can save sorting time, but an extracted summary is not proof that the source document was read correctly. Keep the original records and verify every number you use.
Who is a good fit for AI-assisted filing?
Guided tax software is often a reasonable DIY option when your return is relatively straightforward—for example, wages reported on W-2s, common 1099 income, the standard deduction, basic dependents, simple investment income or ordinary education and retirement contributions. Whether a particular product supports your forms is a separate question; check before entering information.
Pause for qualified human help if your return includes any of the following:

- Multi-state filing obligations or uncertainty about residency.
- A prior-year error, amended return, IRS notice, audit, collection matter or suspected identity theft.
- Casualty, disaster or insolvency issues, or uncertainty about filing status or who may claim a dependent.
A practical stop rule: if you cannot explain where a number came from, identify the record that supports it or understand what the resulting form reports, do not guess your way through the interview.
What to gather before starting
Use official tax documents and complete records rather than estimates, screenshots or a last pay stub. The IRS warns taxpayers not to use a final pay stub in place of the official W-2 when preparing a return. See the IRS guidance on tax-return preparers and return information.
Identity and payment details
- Social Security numbers or taxpayer-identification numbers and dates of birth for you, your spouse and dependents.
- Current address, filing-status information and prior-year adjusted gross income or e-file PIN details if needed for identity verification.
- Bank routing and account numbers if you choose direct deposit or electronic payment.
Income and tax-payment records
- W-2s and relevant Forms 1099, including 1099-NEC, 1099-K, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1099-R, 1099-G and 1099-SSA.
- Brokerage statements, rental-income records, business income and expense records, and digital-asset transaction reports, if applicable.
- Estimated-tax payment confirmations and records of withholding.
Potential deduction and credit records
- Mortgage-interest and property-tax records; student-loan-interest statements; child-care and education expenses.
- Health savings account records, retirement contribution records and charitable donation receipts.
- Medical expense records if you may itemize, and relevant energy or home-improvement records.
Having a document does not automatically make an expense deductible or qualify you for a credit. Eligibility depends on the facts, applicable tax-year rules and supporting records.

| IRS Free File guided software | Eligible taxpayers who want guided preparation at no cost under a participating offer. | For 2025 returns filed in 2026, the IRS says guided software is available to taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less; each partner may set additional requirements. Check whether the needed forms and state filing are included. |
| Free File Fillable Forms | Taxpayers at any income level who are comfortable entering information themselves. | The IRS says these forms are generally less guided and do not provide state tax filing through Fillable Forms. |
| Commercial tax software | People who want a guided interview, document import, state-return options or optional expert help. | Compare federal and state charges, supported forms, eligibility limits, add-on fees and the scope of any human help. |
| Tax professional | People with complex, uncertain or high-stakes tax matters, or who need representation or advice. | Check credentials, fees and availability. Review the completed return, and never sign a blank or incomplete one. |
For Free File, start at IRS.gov’s Free File page, not a search advertisement or a provider’s homepage: the IRS says going directly to a partner may not give you the IRS Free File offer. For the 2026 filing season, the IRS lists eight guided-software partners: 1040Now, Drake/1040.com, ezTaxReturn, FileYourTaxes.com, On-Line Taxes, TaxAct, TaxHawk/FreeTaxUSA and TaxSlayer. Check the IRS partner list and current terms.

Commercial products may market AI guidance or optional expert help, but features and fees vary by product and return. For example, TurboTax describes Intuit Assist; H&R Block describes its online filing options; and TaxAct describes SmartFile AI as an in-product assistant, not tax advice. Confirm current form support and prices directly with the provider. Do not assume that a commercial product’s free edition covers your forms or state return, or that all plans include the same AI features.
How to file a 2025 return with AI assistance
- Confirm the tax year. For the 2026 filing season, the usual individual return is for tax year 2025. Make sure the software and documents are for the same year; thresholds, forms and rules can change.
- Choose your filing route and check form support. Compare IRS Free File, commercial software and professional help against your situation. If you have an unusual form or transaction, ask the provider whether it supports that exact item before starting.
- Review privacy and account security before uploading. Check the product’s data collection, retention, sharing and deletion policies; whether AI conversations are stored; whether support staff can access your return; and whether two-factor authentication is available.
- Enter personal details through the guided interview. Compare names, taxpayer identification numbers, address, filing status, dependents, prior-year information and bank details with your records.
- Import or scan documents only if the product supports it. After each upload, compare every extracted field with the original. Check payer and taxpayer names, decimal points, negative amounts, all pages and who the document belongs to. Look for duplicate uploads or brokerage information collapsed into an incomplete summary.
- Answer the interview completely. AI cannot identify income you do not disclose. Consider whether you had cash or gig work, online-platform income, interest, stock sales, digital assets, rent, foreign income, unemployment or retirement distributions.
- Use AI to explain, not to decide eligibility for you. Ask what a question means or what records may be relevant. If the answer affects a tax position, verify it against current IRS instructions or with a qualified professional.
- Complete state returns separately. Check state residency, part-year or nonresident obligations, local requirements, state-specific credits and state treatment of income. Confirm the software supports the required state forms; a correct federal return does not establish that a state return is complete.
- Run the software review, then inspect the actual forms. Resolve missing-information flags and investigate unexpected changes in tax due or refund. Open Form 1040 and every applicable schedule, including Schedules 1, 2, 3, C, D, E and SE, along with state returns and credit schedules.
- E-file and monitor the result. Complete the identity-verification and electronic-signature steps. Save the submission confirmation, a copy of the filed return, payment confirmation and supporting records. Check for separate federal and state acceptance notices; “submitted” does not necessarily mean “accepted.”
How to ask AI useful tax questions
Give a tool a narrow explanatory task, and ask it to identify the rule, tax year and authoritative source you should check. Do not supply sensitive details to an untrusted chatbot.
Better prompts
- “What does Form 1099-NEC report, and where does this software ask me to enter it?”
- “What records should I review before deciding whether this expense is deductible for tax year 2025?”
- “Why is the interview asking about estimated payments, and where can I verify the amounts?”
- “What does this software error mean, and which original document should I compare with it?”
- “Which form or schedule might this section of the interview create?”
Prompts to avoid
- “Find every deduction I can claim” or “make my refund as large as possible.”
- “Tell me what number to enter” when you have not verified it against records.
- “Can I claim this expense without documentation?”
- “Choose the filing status that gives me the biggest refund.”
AI can suggest possibilities based on what you provide; it cannot manufacture eligibility or supporting evidence. A confident answer is not proof that a deduction, credit, threshold or state rule exists for your facts and tax year.
Final checks before submitting
- Identity: Confirm names, Social Security numbers or taxpayer-identification numbers, filing status and dependents.
- Income: Match the return against every W-2 and 1099, business and rental records, investment records and other income sources. Look for missing and duplicated items.
- Payments and credits: Confirm withholding, estimated payments and applicable credits against the source records. Investigate unexpected amounts rather than accepting an AI explanation at face value.
- Forms and schedules: Read Form 1040 and the schedules that apply; do not rely only on a refund or balance-due summary.
- Bank details: Check routing and account numbers directly. An error can delay or misdirect a payment.
- State filing: Verify each required state return, its filing status and its acceptance separately.
- Submission: Save federal and state acceptance notices, the filed return and payment records.
If a return is accepted and you later find an error, do not simply send a second original return. Follow the applicable IRS correction process, which may involve Form 1040-X or another procedure. The IRS privacy policy page describes procedures for amending a federal tax record.

Protect your tax information
Tax documents can expose identity, income and financial-account information. Do not paste unredacted returns, Social Security numbers, bank details, identity documents or IRS login information into an unknown public chatbot. The IRS’s AI privacy guidance for agency personnel warns against putting sensitive information into unauthorized public AI tools; the consumer takeaway is to share tax data only with a system you have deliberately chosen and whose terms you understand. Read the IRS AI privacy guidance.
Before using a tax product, check its privacy and security policies, including retention, use for product improvement or marketing, sharing with affiliates or service providers, deletion options, staff access and storage of AI conversations. The IRS also advises taxpayers to understand the policies of third parties that handle tax-return information. See IRS guidance on third-party privacy and security policies.
- Use IRS.gov or a provider’s verified official domain; avoid lookalike sites and promises of guaranteed refunds.
- Use a unique password and two-factor authentication where available; never share passwords or authentication codes.
- If you use an AI tool for a general explanation, remove Social Security numbers, bank and routing numbers, driver’s-license numbers, passwords, IRS credentials, authentication codes and full addresses when they are unnecessary.
- Do not treat a vendor’s security claim as a promise that risk is eliminated; review its stated policies and choose accordingly.
The IRS has separately warned about fake deduction calculators exploiting tax-law changes. See how to spot those scams.
Common ways AI-assisted tax filing can go wrong
Invented or outdated guidance
A chatbot may confidently invent a credit, deduction, form number, threshold, state rule, deadline or loophole—or give a rule that applied to a different tax year. For consequential claims, verify the tax year and jurisdiction against official instructions or get professional advice.

Document-reading errors
Scanning can confuse characters such as 0 and O or 1 and 7, drop a minus sign, truncate a payer name, misread cents or miss a page. It can also assign a document to the wrong spouse or create a duplicate. Compare extracted data field by field with the source.
Missing or duplicated income
An import tool cannot know about a document you did not provide, and repeated imports can duplicate amounts. Reconcile the software’s income list against your complete records, including work, investments, digital assets and other sources that apply to you.
Unsupported forms or incomplete state filing
An e-file-approved product may still omit forms or situations you need. Confirm support directly with the provider, and check state obligations independently rather than assuming a federal filing covers them.
Refund pressure and misleading certainty
A larger refund is not automatically a better or more accurate return. Do not accept an unsubstantiated deduction because a tool suggests it, and do not mistake a review flag for a legal determination.
