Which sellers offered a reward?
The Pixel 10a launched in the United States at a $499 starting price. The Google Store alternative is described in 9to5Google’s preorder-deal coverage. Carrier incentives varied, so a “free phone” headline should be checked against the service and bill-credit terms rather than compared with a retailer gift card at face value.
Was the phone really $399?
No—not at checkout based on the reported gift-card offers. The Pixel 10a’s U.S. starting price was $499. A $100 gift card could make the purchase worth roughly $399 to someone who would use the credit, before tax, but the shopper generally paid the phone’s purchase price and received a separate retailer reward. That is not the same as an instant $100 reduction in the phone’s price.

Gift-card value is also not cash-equivalent for every buyer. Its practical worth depends on whether you shop with the issuing retailer and on the original offer’s redemption terms.
When did the preorder deal run, and is it still available?
Google announced the Pixel 10a on February 18, 2026, and said general availability would begin March 5. By August 18, 2026, the preorder window had passed. The historical gift-card offer is not evidence that a current product page or later purchase still qualifies.

Retailer deadlines were not necessarily identical. Best Buy’s archived listing showed a launch promotion through March 11, 2026; that date applies to that listed offer, not to every seller or promotion. What should you check before relying on a promotion?
The launch coverage establishes that the incentives existed, but it does not establish one fulfillment rule or one eligibility rule for every seller. Original order terms matter, especially for a past purchase or any newly advertised offer.

- Eligible model: Confirm storage size, color, unlocked or carrier version, and whether the offer excludes open-box or refurbished devices. Do not assume every configuration qualified.
- Reward delivery: Check whether the card was digital or physical, when it would arrive, whether it was issued automatically or required a claim, and whether it was tied to an account or order. Timing and method were retailer-specific.
- Returns and cancellations: A return can cancel a reward or reduce the refund by its value. Best Buy’s archived listing included a warning about gift-card value on returns.
- Trade-ins and stacking: A trade-in valuation is separate from a gift card and may depend on the old phone’s model and condition. Whether incentives combine depends on the seller and offer terms. Best Buy’s archived terms noted that trade-in value could vary and taxes were calculated before trade-in credit.
- Carrier commitments: For a bill-credit or “free” phone offer, compare the plan price, required line or port-in, credit duration, activation costs, device-lock terms, and consequences of cancellation. A nominally free device can cost more over time than an unlocked phone with a smaller reward.
- Location: The $100 Amazon and Best Buy offers discussed here concern the U.S. launch. Google Store promotions differ by country; for example, its Spanish offers page reflects local currency and terms, not the U.S. promotion.
Which launch offer would have suited you best?
Amazon or Best Buy credit
The retailer gift card was most useful if you already expected to spend at that retailer, wanted an unlocked purchase, and preferred retailer credit over earbuds or Google Store credit. A $100 reward is less compelling if you would not otherwise shop there or if you needed the money to reduce the amount due at checkout.

Google Store credit or Pixel Buds 2a
Google’s choice could suit a buyer planning to purchase Google hardware or accessories, or someone who preferred Pixel Buds 2a. The value was tied to the Google Store or the selected product, so it was not interchangeable with a general gift card. Any trade-in or combination with another offer depended on Google’s terms.
Carrier incentives
A carrier offer could be better for someone already planning to meet its service requirements, but compare the full cost and commitment rather than the advertised phone price alone. Bill credits may stop or be affected if a line is canceled before the credit period ends.

What buyers should do now
Do not use the expired preorder headline as proof of a live $100 reward. For a current purchase, check the seller’s active listing and terms directly: Google Store or Best Buy. Treat any current price cut, subscription trial, trade-in, or carrier promotion as a separate offer and verify its conditions before placing an order.
