For a single computer and basic Word, Excel, and PowerPoint use, Office 2024 can make financial sense. For multiple devices, two or more users, cloud storage, or access to the newest features, Microsoft 365 is usually the better value.
Office 2024 and Microsoft 365: the price comparison
Microsoft sells Office 2024 as a one-time purchase and Microsoft 365 as a subscription. The current U.S. list prices are:

How long does Office 2024 take to become cheaper?
Ignoring the value of storage and extra services, the basic break-even calculation looks like this:
- Office Home 2024: $179.99 divided by $99.99 per year equals about 1.8 years of Microsoft 365 Personal.
- Office Home & Business 2024: $249.99 divided by $99.99 equals about 2.5 years.
- Office Home 2024 compared with Microsoft 365 Family: $179.99 divided by $129.99 equals about 1.4 years.
- Office Home & Business 2024 compared with Family: $249.99 divided by $129.99 equals about 1.9 years.
That calculation favors Office 2024 because it treats the products as equivalent. They are not. Microsoft 365 includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage, use on multiple devices, continuing feature updates, and support. Office 2024 does not include those benefits.
Office 2024 becomes the lower-cost option when you use one computer, do not need the cloud storage, and expect to keep the software for several years without buying another major release. Microsoft lists consumer Office 2024 with a retirement date of October 9, 2029, so it should not be treated as software you buy once and keep supported indefinitely.

Office Home & Business 2024
Home & Business adds Outlook and commercial-use rights. That matters if you use Office for freelance work, a business, or an employer-related activity. It costs $70 more than Office Home 2024, so buying it solely for occasional email may not be worthwhile unless you specifically need the desktop Outlook application or the broader license rights.
Both Office 2024 editions are limited to one PC or Mac at a time. The license can generally be moved to another computer you own, but you must remove it from the old device and activate it on the new one. Hardware changes or repeated transfers can produce a “maximum activations” error and may require Microsoft support or telephone activation.
What Microsoft 365 adds for the subscription price
Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium include the current desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. You can install the apps on all of your devices and use them on up to five devices simultaneously. Supported devices include Windows PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, Android phones, and Android tablets.

Personal includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage for the subscriber. Family and Premium provide 1 TB per person for each shared user, for up to six people. That storage can have real financial value if you would otherwise pay separately for cloud backup or storage.
Microsoft 365 also receives new features, security updates, bug fixes, and upgrades to future major versions. Office 2024 receives security and quality updates, but it is a fixed release: new features and later major Office upgrades are not included.
Microsoft 365 plans now include Copilot-related benefits. The Copilot benefits belong to the subscription owner and are not shared with additional Family or Premium members. Do not assume that adding relatives to a Family plan gives every person the owner’s Copilot entitlement.
Important features Office 2024 does not include
Office 2024 is not simply Microsoft 365 with the billing removed. Microsoft identifies cloud-connected features such as PowerPoint Designer and Data Types in Excel as examples of features unavailable in one-time-purchase Office suites.

In particular, it does not include the OneDrive, Exchange Online, or SharePoint Online allowances associated with qualifying Microsoft 365 plans.
What happens if you cancel Microsoft 365?
A subscription is not risk-free from a budgeting perspective. Once Microsoft 365 expires, the desktop applications eventually enter reduced functionality or view-only mode. You can open and print existing files, but you cannot continue editing or create new documents in the desktop apps without renewing or buying an alternative license.
OneDrive storage also reverts to the free allowance, currently 5 GB. If your files exceed that amount, you cannot upload, edit, or sync new files normally. Microsoft says it may delete OneDrive files after six months when the account remains over quota.

If the page says Turn on recurring billing rather than “Cancel subscription,” recurring billing is already disabled and the plan will expire on the date shown. Subscriptions bought through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer usually must be cancelled through that provider.
Offline use is not completely offline
Neither product should be chosen on the assumption that activation never requires internet access.
Office 2024 requires internet access to redeem and associate the license, activate the apps, and periodically maintain activation and receive updates. Microsoft describes it as unsuitable for fully disconnected scenarios.
Microsoft 365 also requires periodic online verification. If the subscription cannot be verified for an extended period—typically around 30 days, according to Microsoft—the apps eventually enter reduced-functionality mode.
Which option fits your budget?
Buy Office Home 2024 if:
- You need only Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
- You will use one PC or Mac.
- Your use is personal, educational, or otherwise non-commercial.
- You do not need Outlook.
- You do not want recurring billing.
- You are comfortable with the 2024 feature set and support ending October 9, 2029.
Buy Office Home & Business 2024 if:
- You need Outlook.
- You need commercial-use rights.
- You will use one computer.
- You do not need OneDrive storage or continuing feature upgrades.
Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if:
- You work across a computer, phone, and tablet.
- You want 1 TB of OneDrive storage.
- You want current features and future Office upgrades.
- You want Copilot benefits in supported apps.
- You prefer ongoing support to a fixed software release.
Choose Microsoft 365 Family if:
- Two or more people need desktop Office.
- Each person needs a separate Microsoft account and 1 TB of storage.
- You want to share one plan with up to five additional people.
For two users, Family costs $129.99 per year, or about $65 per person annually. That is substantially less than two Microsoft 365 Personal subscriptions at $199.98 per year. Family becomes even more cost-effective as additional household members use it, although Copilot benefits remain with the subscription owner.

Microsoft’s current system-requirements page lists Windows 11 for Office 2024. On Mac, Office supports the three most recent macOS versions. Check compatibility before treating the one-time purchase as a long-term solution, particularly if you use an older Windows PC or Mac.

On a Mac, use the app’s name in the macOS menu bar and select About. The screen identifies whether the installation is Microsoft 365, Office 2024, or another edition. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, buying Office 2024 usually creates a duplicate license rather than adding useful capability.
