A federal jury in Texas found Samsung willfully infringed four Collision Communications patents involving wireless communications and awarded $445,494,160 in reasonable-royalty damages on October 10, 2025. The court entered final judgment in November, but later denied Collision’s request to bar sales of the accused products and addressed supplemental damages and interest. The verdict is not a finding against every Samsung phone or wireless product, and the final amount may differ from the jury’s award.
Who sued Samsung, and what did the jury decide?
Collision Communications, Inc. sued Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. in Collision Communications, Inc. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al., civil action 2:23-cv-00587-JRG, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division. Judge Rodney Gilstrap presided. The eight-person jury returned its verdict on October 10, 2025, after trial began October 3.
The jury found that Samsung infringed all asserted claims presented at trial, that Samsung had not proved those claims invalid, and that the infringement was willful. It awarded $445,494,160 as a reasonable royalty, structured as a running royalty. The verdict form and subsequent court proceedings are summarized in the court record; Bloomberg Law also reported the verdict and patent claims.
This was a civil patent-damages award, not a criminal fine. The jury’s finding of willfulness does not by itself mean the award was automatically tripled. Enhanced damages are a possible court remedy; the verdict amount alone does not establish that the court enhanced damages.

What technology and patents were at issue?
Collision’s patents concern techniques for estimating and tracking signals and managing interference in wireless communications. In practical terms, wireless devices and networks must separate useful transmissions from competing or interfering signals; the patented methods relate to handling that problem and improving communication efficiency. The technology originated with defense contractor BAE Systems, and Collision acquired the patents roughly 15 years before the verdict to commercialize them in the cellular industry, according to Collision counsel’s announcement.
Four patents remained for the jury after Collision narrowed its case. Coverage identifies them as:

- U.S. Patent No. 6,947,505, titled “System for parameter estimation and tracking of interfering digitally modulated signals.”
These patent descriptions are reported by Bloomberg Law and Law360. The dispute concerned Collision’s wireless-communications patents, not Netlist memory technology.
Which Samsung products were implicated?
The case involved Galaxy products and other Samsung products alleged to use wireless technologies associated with 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi communications. That description does not mean the jury found every Galaxy model, every Samsung wireless product, or every implementation of those technologies infringed. Patent verdicts apply to the specific claims and accused products litigated. The available reporting does not establish a complete product-by-product list or a finding that Samsung violated wireless standards as a whole.

What does the $445.5 million award represent?
The jury characterized the award as a reasonable royalty: compensation based on what a license for the patented technology could have cost. In patent cases, that analysis can involve evidence about accused-product sales, the technology’s contribution, comparable licenses, negotiations between the parties, expert testimony, and separating the patented feature’s value from the value of a much larger product.
The verdict amount does not, by itself, reveal a per-device royalty rate, unit count, or precise calculation. It should not be read as proof that the jury applied any particular rate or treated the entire value of a phone as attributable to Collision’s patents.

Why did the jury find willful infringement?
Collision reportedly presented evidence of extensive discussions with Samsung from 2011 through 2014 about a possible business relationship, including communications about the patent portfolio. Collision relied on that history in arguing that Samsung knew about the patents and nevertheless infringed. The jury ultimately found willfulness, but that finding is distinct from the separate question of whether a court should enhance damages.

Final judgment entered in November 2025
The court entered final judgment based on the verdict on November 12, 2025. A jury verdict and a court judgment are separate procedural steps: the verdict states what the jury decided, while the judgment formally records the court’s disposition. Post-trial proceedings and an appeal can still affect the judgment’s amount or enforceability.

The court denied a permanent injunction in May 2026
Collision asked the court to permanently bar Samsung from selling the accused products. On May 18, 2026, Judge Gilstrap denied that request, concluding that Collision had not shown an injunction was warranted under the traditional equitable framework. The ruling meant the damages verdict did not itself remove the products from sale. The injunction decision is available through FindLaw’s case record.
A July 2026 order addressed supplemental damages and interest
In an order signed July 16, 2026, the court granted in part and denied in part Collision’s request for supplemental damages and interest. It addressed damages tied to post-verdict sales and awarded post-judgment interest at the statutory rate under 28 U.S.C. § 1961; the order states Samsung did not oppose post-judgment interest. The court order does not establish one consolidated final dollar figure that replaces the jury’s $445,494,160 award. Accordingly, the jury’s award and the eventual total payable should not be treated as interchangeable.
What could happen next?
Patent cases can continue after judgment. Possible next steps include post-trial motions seeking judgment as a matter of law or a new trial, challenges to infringement, validity, willfulness, or damages, an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and proceedings to enforce or calculate amounts due. These are procedural possibilities, not confirmation that Samsung filed a particular motion or appeal. The case can be tracked by its case number, 2:23-cv-00587-JRG; Law360’s docket page identifies the case.
