The change could make it easier to order groceries with other Amazon products, but availability, fees, delivery windows, and food handling still vary by location and service.
What Amazon is expanding
“Amazon grocery” covers several services, not one uniform delivery network. Amazon.com sells shelf-stable groceries and household essentials; Amazon Fresh offers online grocery shopping in eligible areas; Whole Foods Market offers its own grocery assortment for delivery or pickup; and Amazon’s Same-Day service is adding perishable items to a catalog that also includes ordinary Amazon products. Smaller ultra-fast services, where offered, are separate and generally carry a narrower selection.
In an announcement updated May 12, 2026, Amazon said customers in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns could shop groceries through Amazon, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Fresh, and local retail partnerships. That is a company-reported figure for its broader grocery reach—not a claim that fresh groceries through Same-Day are available in all those places. Amazon’s grocery and store strategy announcement also said broader fresh-grocery Same-Day availability was planned for 2026.
Amazon reported that perishable-grocery sales through Same-Day had grown 40-fold since January 2025. The company did not define in that announcement whether “sales” means revenue, units, or another measure, so the figure indicates reported growth on Amazon’s own measure, not a quantified increase in orders or independently verified market demand.

How adding groceries increases delivery capacity
More categories use the same network
Instead of building a separate delivery system for every grocery order, Amazon is adding produce, meat, seafood, dairy, baked goods, and frozen food to its Same-Day offering in eligible areas. In August 2025, Amazon said fresh groceries were available through Same-Day in more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns, and set a target of more than 2,300 by the end of that year. The target is not, by itself, confirmation that the rollout reached that number. Amazon’s August 2025 announcement described thousands of perishable items in the offering.
Where the service is available, combining groceries and general merchandise in a shopping basket can spare a customer a separate grocery order. Operationally, more categories on local routes may help Amazon use delivery capacity more intensively. That is a plausible network benefit, not proof that every order will arrive together, that every item will be in stock, or that grocery delivery is profitable.
Local facilities complement larger fulfillment centers
Amazon’s same-day facilities are smaller sites near major metropolitan areas. The company says they hold products selected for local demand, use streamlined conveyors, and allow direct picking to pack stations. Its fulfillment-network materials describe regional inventory placement and links between these local sites and larger fulfillment centers, which can replenish selection beyond what a nearby same-day site stocks. Amazon’s Same-Day facility fact sheet says the average time from picking an item to placing its package on the outbound dock is 11 minutes—an Amazon-reported figure for the described Same-Day operations, not a grocery-specific or universal delivery-time measure.

Regional placement can shorten the distance an item travels and support faster replenishment, but a locally stocked network may offer a narrower selection than a larger facility. Amazon’s broader descriptions of its network explain the rationale for regionalization, but they do not establish that every grocery SKU is stocked locally. Why grocery requires different handling
Fast picking alone does not protect food quality. Perishables require suitable refrigerated or frozen storage, careful staging, protective packaging, and limited time outside controlled conditions. What happens at each stage can depend on the product, service, facility, and delivery partner; Amazon’s public materials do not establish identical end-to-end temperature control for every grocery order.
Amazon said its specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network performs a six-point quality check when products arrive and another before they leave for delivery. That is a company description of its process, not independent evidence that every item in every market receives the same handling. The August 2025 announcement names the check and the categories included in the Same-Day expansion.

For shoppers, delivery speed and food quality are related but distinct: a quick slot does not guarantee an item will be available, arrive without damage, or meet a shopper’s expectations for freshness. Check the item and delivery terms shown for the local service, and use that service’s support process if an order arrives spoiled or damaged. The public materials cited here do not specify one universal freshness guarantee, substitution rule, or refund policy for all Amazon grocery channels.
Whole Foods is a store and a local grocery node
Amazon says it plans to open more than 100 Whole Foods Market stores over the next few years. It is also expanding Whole Foods Daily Shop, a smaller neighborhood format: the May 2026 announcement said five locations were open and five more were planned by the end of 2026. Those are announced plans and status figures, not completed future openings. Amazon’s announcement sets out the store plans.

Whole Foods can support in-person shopping as well as local delivery and pickup, but a retail store is not interchangeable with a centralized fulfillment center. Store-based service depends on local stock, staff, back-room capacity, and customer traffic; its role in fulfillment can vary by market. More stores may improve proximity for some shoppers, but do not ensure identical coverage or selection nationwide.

Why Amazon is closing its own Fresh and Go stores
Amazon said it plans to close most Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores because it has not yet found a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and scalable economic model for those formats. It expects to convert some locations into Whole Foods stores where appropriate. Amazon Fresh continues as an online service in eligible areas; the physical-store closures do not mean Amazon is leaving grocery delivery.
This is a shift in where Amazon is placing emphasis: less on its own Fresh and Go storefronts, and more on online grocery, Whole Foods, and formats it believes can work better. A closure could reduce nearby pickup or delivery options until a conversion or replacement is in place, but the company announcement does not establish how local availability, staffing, or delivery selection will change at each affected site.

Coverage is address-specific. Amazon’s broad reach figure does not tell an individual shopper whether Same-Day perishables, Amazon Fresh, or Whole Foods delivery is available at their address. Check the local service page or enter a ZIP code and address before planning around a particular assortment or delivery time. The channels can differ in selection, fulfillment source, fees, and ordering experience.

Whole Foods’ customer-service FAQ lists a $9.95 delivery service fee for Prime members and $13.95 for non-Prime customers, with possible additional rush fees; it lists pickup as free on orders of any size, also subject to possible rush fees. These are figures stated in the FAQ, not a guarantee of the amount at every address or checkout. The FAQ warns that higher demand can make delivery windows unavailable. Check current local terms, fees, minimums, and slots at checkout. Whole Foods’ delivery and pickup FAQ has the service details, while its Amazon service FAQ covers related eligibility information.
Do not assume the fee or Prime rules for Whole Foods apply to Amazon Fresh or Same-Day grocery orders. Nor does adding groceries to an ordinary Amazon basket guarantee one package or one arrival: orders may be fulfilled from different locations, and the cited public announcements do not promise a single shipment. The service and checkout screens are the practical place to confirm applicable fees, minimums, delivery windows, and order handling.
- Stock and substitutions: Local inventory can be incomplete. A listing is not a guarantee of fulfillment, and the available public announcements do not specify a universal substitution policy across services.
- Delivery windows: A same-day service does not guarantee a slot at every time of day; windows can disappear when demand is high.
- Separate channels: Fresh Same-Day, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods delivery are not synonyms. Confirm which service is handling the basket.
- Other eligibility questions: The cited announcements do not establish one cross-service rule for SNAP/EBT acceptance or Prime membership. Confirm eligibility and payment options in the local ordering flow.
What Amazon is still testing
Amazon has described several ideas without confirming a nationwide rollout. It is exploring an Amazon supercenter concept that could combine fresh groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise, but its May 2026 announcement gave no opening dates, store count, or economics. Amazon has also discussed Amazon Grocery areas inside Whole Foods and micro-fulfillment capabilities at selected Whole Foods locations. Andy Jassy’s discussion of micro-fulfillment describes strategic direction, not proof of a completed national deployment. Jassy’s discussion of Amazon’s grocery business provides that context.
These concepts should not be confused with established Same-Day facilities or treated as available services unless Amazon confirms a specific location and offering. Ultra-fast small-format facilities likewise serve narrower assortments and should be assessed separately from the broader Same-Day grocery network.
What the expansion does—and does not—show
Amazon’s approach addresses several capacity constraints at once: proximity through local facilities and stores, a broader basket through perishable Same-Day items, and specialized processes for temperature-sensitive goods. The model may make grocery ordering more convenient, especially for customers who value combining categories in one order. But company announcements and operational metrics do not establish consistent cold-chain performance, lower prices, improved profitability, or a uniform service experience across markets.
For a customer, the meaningful test is local: whether the wanted items are in stock, a useful delivery or pickup window is offered, the total cost is acceptable, and the order arrives in satisfactory condition. Amazon’s network expansion increases the potential capacity to serve grocery orders; it does not make those outcomes automatic.
