The indictment, unsealed January 23, 2025, also accuses them of using false financial records and misleading statements. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.
Who was arrested, and what was GameOn?
Alexander Charles Beckman founded and led GameOn, a San Francisco company that marketed conversational-AI chatbot software. It was also known as GameOn Technology and later operated under the name ON Platform. Prosecutors said the business presented itself as serving prominent professional sports leagues and teams, as well as luxury fashion and retail brands. The Justice Department’s account of the indictment describes the alleged investor scheme; the DOJ case page identifies the company’s names.
Beckman and Valerie Lau Beckman, an attorney who worked on GameOn corporate and transactional matters, were arrested and made their initial federal court appearances in San Francisco on January 23, 2025. They were indicted together. The case is about alleged fraud in the company’s fundraising and financial representations; the charges do not establish that its chatbot product did not exist.
How much money did prosecutors say was raised and spent?
The DOJ says Beckman raised more than $60 million from investors over roughly six years, from September 2018 through July 2024. Prosecutors allege that the couple used more than $4 million of GameOn investor funds for personal expenses. The $60 million is the amount allegedly raised, not a court-established measure of investor losses or the amount allegedly spent on personal purchases.

The DOJ lists purchases of San Francisco residences, private-school payments and payments to the couple’s wedding venue among the alleged expenses. Futurism’s report, citing SEC-related material and other reporting, puts the alleged personal spending at $4.2 million and adds jewelry and a Tesla Model X. Those additional details are reported allegations, not findings in a criminal trial.
What financial information was allegedly false?
Prosecutors allege that investor communications overstated or invented revenue, cash balances and customer relationships, and that falsified financial information was used to support the company’s fundraising. The DOJ says Beckman allegedly used the names, signatures or email identities of at least seven real people without authorization, including a GameOn chief financial officer, two bank employees and an employee of a major professional sports league.
Alleged audit reports and bank statements
The indictment alleges that Beckman fabricated two audit reports using the names, signatures and trademarks of reputable accounting firms, including a Big Four firm, and distributed more than a dozen fake bank statements. One statement allegedly represented that a GameOn account held more than $13 million when its actual balance was $25.93. Prosecutors also allege Lau delivered that statement to a San Francisco bank branch and arranged for Beckman to collect it. The detailed claims appear in the indictment.

Reported revenue claims
Futurism reported that SEC-related allegations said GameOn’s annual revenue never exceeded $500,000, that the company was never profitable and that it lost millions of dollars annually. That revenue figure is reported through secondary coverage of SEC material; it is not the same as the DOJ’s allegation that investors received false or inflated revenue and customer information. The reported allegations also describe arrangements in which GameOn paid for rights to use branded content while presenting those relationships as recurring customer revenue. A brand relationship or content arrangement, by itself, does not establish a particular level of recurring sales.

What happened to the company?
Futurism reported that ON Platform laid off all 50 staff members after about $11 million in cash was discovered to be missing, and that Beckman resigned. The same report described a company-related account with 37 cents. That 37-cent figure is a separate reported episode; it should not be confused with the DOJ’s allegation that a different statement showed an account balance of $25.93.
The available reporting supports severe financial distress and layoffs, but does not establish that the company completed a bankruptcy proceeding. The reported cash shortfall also does not by itself determine how much investors ultimately lost or what assets may be recovered.

What is Valerie Lau Beckman accused of doing?
The indictment alleges that Lau, while working as an attorney, handled GameOn corporate matters and helped with parts of the alleged scheme. Prosecutors say she provided Beckman with genuine audit reports obtained from her employer, emailed a fake audit report to an investor representative knowing it was false, and lied to her employer about her work for GameOn. The DOJ also alleges she tried to delete hundreds of GameOn-related files while a grand-jury investigation was pending. These remain allegations.

The 25-count indictment includes allegations involving conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud, bank-fraud conspiracy, false statements to a bank, aggravated identity theft and monetary transactions involving property derived from specified unlawful activity. Lau also faces an obstruction-of-justice charge. The precise counts and allegations are set out in the indictment.
The DOJ release lists maximum statutory penalties of up to 20 years for each wire-fraud and securities-fraud count; up to 30 years for bank-fraud conspiracy and false statements to a bank; up to 10 years for certain unlawful-proceeds transactions; and two years for each aggravated identity-theft count, served consecutively to other prison terms. Lau’s obstruction charge carries a maximum of up to 20 years. These are statutory maximums, not predictions of any sentence. A sentence, if there is a conviction, would depend on the charges resolved, applicable guidelines, any plea agreement and the judge’s decision.

What is the case status as of August 18, 2026?
The DOJ case page was updated July 1, 2026. It records that both defendants were released on bond, and that pretrial and trial dates were vacated while issues involving defense counsel were addressed. The page says the parties may be proceeding toward an agreement involving guilty pleas and lists a status hearing for August 27, 2026. As of August 18, that hearing date had not yet arrived, and the available update does not report a plea or conviction. The defendants remain presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
