uBooks by NIX United is listed as a free iPhone and iPad ebook reader, not a paid book subscription. It is designed for reading files you supply, with advertised support for EPUB, TXT and FB2 plus many display controls. But a U.S. App Store score of 5.0 comes from only two ratings, and the available information does not establish a clear 2025 update history. It may suit Apple-device owners with DRM-free books; the rating alone is not a reason to trust it with a long-term library.
What is uBooks?
uBooks is a Books-category app from NIX United for iPhone and iPad. Its main purpose is to import and read ebook and document files, rather than sell books or provide an unlimited subscription catalog. The U.S. App Store listing describes the download as free. See the uBooks App Store listing.
Do not confuse it with Ubook. Ubook, from Ubook Editora Ltda., is a separate content subscription service offering material such as audiobooks and ebooks. Its plans and prices in Brazilian reais are not uBooks prices. Ubook’s official site.
How much does uBooks cost?
The U.S. App Store listing shows a free download and does not establish a current subscription or paid tier for this app. Because storefronts can differ by country, check the listing in your own App Store region before installing.

Older NIX material describes uBooks XL as an ad-free paid edition. That historical reference does not establish the price or commercial model of the current uBooks listing, or a confirmed 2025 price. NIX’s older uBooks article.
What formats and reading features does it offer?
File formats
Apple’s listing distinguishes core ebook formats from files that work in reduced-functionality mode:
| Support level | Formats listed |
|---|---|
| Core ebook formats | EPUB, TXT and FB2, including FB2 files in ZIP and RAR archives |
| Reduced-functionality mode | PDF, RTF, HTML, JPG, PNG and BMP images, Microsoft Office files and iWork files |
That distinction matters: a file extension appearing on the list does not mean it gets the same reading and layout experience as an EPUB. PDF pages, for example, have fixed layouts, so test zoom, navigation and text readability with your own files rather than assuming the app will reflow them like an ebook. The listing also does not guarantee that every file from every publisher will open.
DRM is a separate issue from format. A protected book may not open just because its underlying format is EPUB or PDF; the listing does not establish compatibility with books locked to Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books or another publisher ecosystem.

Display and convenience controls
The listing advertises day and night modes; adjustable font size, type and color; background color; line spacing and margins; left alignment or full justification; text selection; TXT encoding options; smooth autoscroll; page-curl animation; customizable tap zones; word hyphenation; and online translation. English and Russian are listed as language choices. These are advertised features, not independent evidence of how well each works with a particular file or installed version.
uBooks also advertises iCloud synchronization for reading progress, bookmarks and highlights. That claim is not a guarantee of reliable syncing in every setup: it can depend on the installed version, Apple account, iCloud availability and permissions. It does not imply synchronization with Android, Windows or unrelated reading services.
How do you get books into uBooks?
The App Store listing names Wi-Fi HTTP and FTP servers, a built-in browser, iTunes and OPDS catalogs as import routes. NIX’s older guide describes a general Wi-Fi workflow involving a shared network and a browser or FTP client, but old transfer instructions may not match today’s iOS or macOS interface. Use the controls and address shown by your installed app rather than relying on old menu names.
- Check that the file is a supported format and, if it is protected, confirm that the protection is compatible with the app.
- Open uBooks’ import or Wi-Fi transfer feature and choose an available method, such as its server or browser route.
- For a Wi-Fi transfer, connect the iPhone or iPad and computer to the same network, then follow the address and steps displayed by the app.
- Upload the file and open it from the app’s bookshelf.
- If it does not appear or open, try a plain EPUB or TXT file. If that works, investigate the original file’s format, archive, DRM or integrity; if it does not, check the transfer method and app permissions.
OPDS lets a reader access a catalog; it does not guarantee that a catalog is legal, available, compatible or free of DRM. You remain responsible for using lawful sources.

Which devices can run it?
The U.S. App Store listing specifies iOS 11 or later for iPhone and iPadOS 11 or later for iPad, and lists iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It also indicates compatibility with Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 11 or later. That listing does not establish support for Intel Macs, a full native Mac app, Android, Windows or Kindle devices. Compatibility wording and availability can vary by storefront, so check the listing for your country and device.
What do the ratings and reviews actually show?
The U.S. App Store listing displays 5.0 out of 5 from two ratings. Other regional listings also show very small rating samples. That is a positive visible score, but two ratings are not enough to establish broad satisfaction, reliable support, or long-term performance. NIX’s older article praises the app and describes changes in response to user feedback; that is the developer’s own account, not independent product testing.
Is uBooks still maintained?
The available listing information does not establish a dependable 2025 release cadence for this exact app. Compatibility requirements and a feature list are not proof of recent maintenance, but the absence of a verified update history is not proof that the app has been abandoned. Check the App Store version-history panel in your region if recent updates or support status are important to your decision.
Who is uBooks a good fit for?
Consider it if you
- Read on an iPhone or iPad and already have DRM-free EPUB, TXT or FB2 files.
- Need FB2 support, including files packaged in ZIP or RAR archives.
- Want extensive typography, layout and scrolling controls without choosing a store ecosystem.
- Are comfortable testing your own files and checking whether advertised features work as expected.
Look elsewhere if you
- Want to buy books in the app, subscribe to a large catalog, or listen to audiobooks.
- Need one library across Android, Windows, Kindle and Apple devices.
- Depend on modern DRM compatibility, extensive independent reviews or a verified recent update record.
- Need consistent full-featured support for PDF or office documents rather than a dedicated ebook experience.
There is not enough verified current pricing and feature information here to make a responsible named-alternative comparison. Choose a reader based on whether you need local files, a commercial book store, cross-platform syncing or audiobooks; those are different product categories.
