Amazon’s reported AI-coding competitor is no longer just a rumor. AWS launched Kiro on July 14, 2025, as an agentic development environment built around structured specifications. The May 1, 2025 report that prompted the question was credible, but it did not confirm Kiro’s name or final feature set. As of August 2026, Kiro is an active Amazon product, and AWS has set April 30, 2027, as the end-of-support date for Amazon Q Developer’s IDE plugins and paid subscriptions.
What did the May 2025 report say?
On May 1, 2025, The Information reported that AWS was developing an AI-assisted coding service intended to offer features associated with Cursor and go beyond Amazon Q Developer’s existing coding assistance. The reported service could analyze a codebase, infer project intent, and suggest or generate additions. Techmeme indexed the report and attributed it to The Information; WinBuzzer also summarized it. Techmeme’s report record and WinBuzzer’s coverage describe reporting based on sources with direct knowledge, not an Amazon product announcement.
At the time, the product’s name, launch date, pricing, supported models, and final feature set were unconfirmed. It is therefore more accurate to say that the report anticipated a new AWS coding environment than to call it an officially announced “Cursor killer.”
What did the reported project become?
AWS launched Kiro on July 14, 2025. AWS describes it as an agentic IDE and CLI centered on “spec-driven development”: turning a feature request into requirements, design information, implementation tasks, and verification work. Kiro also has agent hooks, steering files, custom agents, terminal integration, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support. AWS’s Kiro introduction explains the product’s approach.

Kiro is not simply Amazon Q Developer under a new name. Amazon’s product history includes CodeWhisperer, the broader Amazon Q Developer assistant, and now Kiro as a standalone, specification-driven development environment. AWS says the Q Developer CLI was rebranded to Kiro, while other Q Developer offerings have a separate transition schedule. AWS’s upgrade documentation explains that distinction.
How spec-driven development works
In a spec-driven workflow, the developer gives Kiro a feature request, then works with it to create structured requirements and design information. Kiro turns those artifacts into an implementation plan and task list, and uses them as the basis for code changes and verification. The specifications remain available as project documentation and context rather than disappearing into a chat transcript.
This makes the process more explicit than relying only on autocomplete or an open-ended prompt. It can help a team keep requirements, decisions, and implementation work connected. It does not guarantee that the requirements are correct, the code is secure, or the tests are adequate. Cursor and Windsurf can also be used with planning documents; Kiro’s distinction is that specifications are central to its product workflow, not that competitors cannot plan.

What happens to Amazon Q Developer?
On April 30, 2026, AWS announced that Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins and paid subscriptions would reach end of support on April 30, 2027, and directed customers toward Kiro. The announcement does not cover Q Developer in the AWS Management Console or certain first-party AWS experiences. AWS also says Q Developer Pro subscriptions can be used with Kiro during the transition. See AWS’s end-of-support announcement and the Q Developer FAQ.
For teams that rely on Q Developer IDE plugins, the end-of-support date makes migration planning a practical concern: inventory IDE-specific workflows and features, test Kiro against representative repositories, and confirm how accounts, subscriptions, and usage are administered. AWS’s upgrade guide covers the CLI rebrand and transition details.
Availability, models, and pricing
Kiro is an active product, not an unreleased project. Its IDE, CLI, and web surfaces are described in the official FAQ, but particular features may depend on the plan, region, or preview status. Early launch coverage reported Anthropic Claude models, including Claude Sonnet variants. Model availability can change; that history is not evidence that Kiro currently uses one model exclusively. Check the live product interface and documentation for the current model roster.

AWS documentation has listed Kiro Pro at $20 per month, Pro+ at $40 per month, Power at $200 per month, and additional credits at $0.04 per credit. These are price signals in the cited AWS FAQ, not a guarantee that the live offer, included usage, or overage terms remain unchanged. AWS’s Q Developer FAQ has listed Pro at $19 per month, but Q Developer and Kiro meter usage differently, so the two subscription prices are not directly comparable. Verify current terms at Kiro pricing and the AWS Q Developer FAQ before budgeting.

Individual developers
Kiro is worth testing if you want requirements and project instructions to persist across coding tasks, or if you prefer an agent that works from a plan rather than a sequence of informal prompts. If your main need is occasional autocomplete, a credit-based agentic workflow may be more than you need.
AWS-native teams
Teams already using AWS may value a path aligned with Amazon’s developer ecosystem. Kiro is presented as a general-purpose development environment, not only an AWS infrastructure assistant; that does not make it independent of Amazon’s account and commercial ecosystem.

Engineering organizations
Specifications, steering files, hooks, and specialized agents may be useful where teams need repeatable conventions and visible implementation intent. Before adoption, establish repository permissions, branch protections, test gates, secret handling, and review requirements. Measure usage on representative work so that credit consumption is understood before broader rollout.
Teams seeking local or model-controlled tooling
If you require complete control over model hosting or local inference, verify that Kiro meets that requirement before investing in setup. Do not assume a product’s cloud-agnostic positioning implies local inference or independence from its vendor.
Risks to check before using an agent on production code
- Incorrect requirements: Kiro can turn a mistaken assumption into a polished specification; a structured artifact is not proof that the feature is right.
- Stale project instructions: Steering files can keep enforcing conventions that no longer match the architecture.
- Permissions and command execution: Repository and terminal access increase the consequences of an agent error. Limit permissions and review commands and changes.
- Tests that miss the requirement: Generated tests may validate the implementation’s assumptions rather than the behavior users need.
- Usage variability: Repeated specification revisions and agentic tasks may consume more credits than simple code completion. Track cost per completed task.
- Model and product changes: Model choices, plans, usage limits, and preview capabilities can change independently of the product name.
- Data and code terms: Review Amazon’s current service terms and your organization’s policy for prompts, code handling, retention, and service improvement; do not assume generated code is automatically risk-free.
- Migration gaps: Q Developer users should identify IDE-specific and language-transformation workflows that need validation before the scheduled sunset.
AWS has also announced autonomous Kiro agents; their availability and status should be checked separately from the standard IDE workflow. See Amazon’s announcement and Kiro’s autonomous-agent post.
