Stability AI’s leadership change became official on June 25, 2024, when the company named Prem Akkaraju CEO, made investor Sean Parker executive chairman, and announced a new investment round. The company did not disclose the amount raised. The move followed founder Emad Mostaque’s March 2024 resignation and signaled an effort to turn the company’s open-model reputation into a broader, commercially sustainable generative-AI business. By August 2026, its products and business model span image, audio and 3D generation, while API retirements and licensing conditions make current terms more important than the headline leadership news.
What changed at Stability AI?
On June 25, 2024, Stability AI announced Prem Akkaraju as CEO and Sean Parker as executive chairman, alongside an investment from a group that included Parker, Greycroft, Coatue Management, Sound Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, O’Shaughnessy Ventures, and Eric Schmidt. The announcement called it a significant new investment but did not state a dollar amount. It did not establish that the financing was a rescue or disclose whether it was structured as a recapitalization.
The company’s announcement followed March 2024 reports of founder Emad Mostaque’s resignation. Shan Shan Wong, the COO, and Christian Laforte, the CTO, served as interim co-CEOs before Akkaraju’s appointment, according to VentureBeat’s contemporaneous coverage. Media reports identified Akkaraju as the incoming CEO before Stability AI confirmed the appointment. The company’s official announcement is dated June 25, four days after VentureBeat’s June 21 article.
Stability AI described four commercial priorities: managed pipelines for developers across image, video and audio; custom enterprise models; creative and production tools for independent creators and studios; and consumer applications for art, design, social software and gaming. That plan broadened the company’s pitch beyond downloadable image models.

Why did Mostaque leave?
Mostaque’s resignation is established; a single definitive reason for it is not. Contemporaneous coverage said he was interested in decentralized AI and described investor concerns about Stability AI’s financial viability and operations. Those reports provide context, but the company’s June announcement did not publish a detailed account of the departure or identify a specific dispute as the cause.
The financial pressure was significant in the reporting available at the time. VentureBeat cited Reuters figures of more than $30 million in losses in the first quarter of 2024 on revenue of less than $5 million. Those are reported figures, not financial statements confirmed in Stability AI’s announcement. They help explain why new capital and a commercial strategy were central to the leadership story, but do not show that the investment resolved the company’s financial challenges.
Why Akkaraju’s background mattered
Akkaraju came from visual effects and media production, including leadership of Weta Digital. That experience aligned with Stability AI’s stated interest in production workflows, studio tools and a portfolio that could include image, video, audio and 3D generation. It also pointed toward a different commercial emphasis: not only developing models, but making them useful within creative pipelines and enterprise deployments.

The background was a strategic fit, not proof of product-market success. Running production-oriented creative software involves reliability, integration, licensing and support expectations that differ from releasing a model for developers to download and adapt. Parker’s executive-chairman role and the investor group added a governance and capital dimension, but the announcement did not provide enough detail to characterize their operating mandates.

The product picture around the June 2024 announcement reflected a company expanding from image generation. Stable Diffusion 3 Medium launched in June 2024; Stable Audio 2.0 had been announced in April, with the company describing generation of tracks up to three minutes. Other initiatives included Stable Video and Stable Video 3D, Stable Code, Stable LM, the Stable Artisan Discord interface, developer APIs and self-hosting options. This is a snapshot of that period, not a list of current hosted services.
Image generation
As of August 16, 2026, the developer platform lists the Stable Diffusion 3.5 family, including Large, Large Turbo, Medium and Flash, alongside Stable Image services. Stability AI describes Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large as an 8-billion-parameter base model. The company’s release notes document a transition away from older API offerings: on April 17, 2025, Stable Diffusion 3.0 APIs were deprecated and users were automatically transitioned to corresponding Stable Diffusion 3.5 APIs at no additional cost.

Audio generation
Stability AI announced Stable Audio 3.0 on May 20, 2026. The company describes variable-length generation and editing, including inpainting, and says the model family was trained on licensed and Creative Commons data. Its developer materials describe generation of up to six minutes of 44.1 kHz stereo audio. Those are company descriptions, not independent performance findings. The product page is Stable Audio.
3D generation
The current API catalog lists Stable Fast 3D and Stable Point Aware 3D, including SPAR3D-related functionality for generating or editing objects from a single image. The developer platform is the place to check the current model names, operation costs and availability.

Video and API availability
Stable Video Diffusion was introduced as an image-to-video model for short clips, but its hosted API did not remain available. Stability AI deprecated the Stable Video Diffusion API and Stable Diffusion 1.6 API effective July 24, 2025. The company said self-hosted deployment remained available under a self-hosted license. Do not assume that a model’s existence or downloadable availability means its hosted endpoint is still active; check the API update and current documentation before building around it.

How the business model works
Stability AI’s commercial approach combines hosted API usage, model licensing for self-hosting and enterprise services. The best route depends on whether a customer values convenience, control, customization or contractual support. API terms and self-hosted model licenses are distinct; availability under one does not establish identical rights or capabilities under the other.
Hosted APIs and usage costs
As listed on the official developer pricing page on August 16, 2026, one credit equals $0.01, new users can receive 25 free credits, and additional credits can be purchased at $1 per 100 credits. The page listed these example operation costs on that date:

These figures are listed per operation, not a forecast of total production cost; volume, retries and workflow design affect spend. Stability AI’s API documentation requires API-key authentication in the Authorization header and specifies a limit of 150 requests per 10 seconds. Prices are not static: the company announced price increases for selected API services effective August 1, 2025. For a buying decision, use the live pricing page rather than a historical price or an older integration guide.
Self-hosting and model licenses
Stability AI’s license page says its Community License is available to individuals and organizations with annual revenue below $1 million. Enterprises, API providers and businesses above that threshold need an enterprise arrangement or custom pricing. The applicable terms depend on the specific model and use. “Open weights” or downloadable files do not automatically mean unrestricted commercial use.
Self-hosting can offer more control over infrastructure, data and customization, but it puts GPU capacity, deployment, security, updates and model maintenance on the user. Teams should confirm the exact model license and business-revenue conditions before commercial deployment.
Enterprise services
Stability AI positions enterprise work around commercial licensing, implementation support, custom model training, consulting and self-hosted deployment. The reviewed official license page does not state a public enterprise price. Buyers should establish the terms that matter to their use case directly, including support, deployment rights, data handling and version commitments.

The record through August 2026 shows both expansion and pruning. Stability AI continued to promote image, 3D and audio services, while retiring older API endpoints and moving users toward newer image models. That is consistent with an attempt to operate a managed, multimodal business rather than relying only on the early Stable Diffusion model-release model. It is not, by itself, evidence of durable revenue growth, market share or technical leadership.
The trade-off for customers is practical. Stability AI’s model control, self-hosting and customization can matter to developers and organizations with the capacity to manage deployment. A hosted competitor may be easier to use and provide more predictable workflow support. Comparing providers therefore means comparing licensing, infrastructure, endpoint longevity and production fit—not only image quality.
