Deal expired: The $50 discount was reported on March 31, 2025, the final day of Amazon’s Spring Sale. It applied to the U.S. 13-inch MacBook Air with M4, 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD: $949 before tax, down from its $999 launch price. This is historical coverage, not a live offer.
What the $949 offer included
Engadget reported the 13-inch, 16GB M4 MacBook Air at $949 on March 31, 2025, versus its $999 U.S. launch price—a $50 reduction, or about 5%. Engadget’s deal report identifies the offer as the base 13-inch model. Contemporaneous coverage identifies that configuration’s storage as 256GB. Tom’s Guide’s 2025 Spring Sale coverage also listed the 13-inch model at $949.
The $999 figure was the model’s U.S. launch price, not proof that Amazon consistently charged that amount before the sale. The cited coverage does not establish whether Amazon, Apple or a third-party merchant sold the specific unit, nor its condition or fulfillment terms.
What the M4 Air offered
Apple announced the M4 MacBook Air on March 5, 2025, with availability beginning March 12. The 13-inch model started at $999 in the U.S.; the 15-inch started at $1,199. Apple’s launch announcement lists the M4 chip, 16GB of unified memory as standard, and support for up to two external displays in addition to the built-in screen.

The 13-inch display is a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina panel with a native resolution of 2560 by 1664 and a stated brightness of 500 nits. The base configuration uses an 8-core GPU; higher configurations could be equipped with a 10-core GPU. Apple lists a 10-core CPU, a 16-core Neural Engine and a 12MP Center Stage camera. Its technical specifications give battery estimates of up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use. These are Apple’s claims, not independent test results. The Air is fanless and was offered in sky blue, midnight, starlight and silver. Apple’s technical specifications provide the display and battery details.
The main trade-off: 256GB of storage
For schoolwork, office documents, web use and streaming, 256GB may be enough if most files stay in cloud storage and large media libraries are kept elsewhere. It can become tight when a user installs many applications, stores photos or video locally, keeps large project files, or uses virtual machines. macOS and applications also occupy part of the drive.
External storage can help with files and media, but it does not make the internal drive larger for applications or system data, and it means carrying another device. Buyers who know they need substantial local storage should compare a 512GB configuration—or the cost of upgrading—with the deal price before deciding.

Was $949 a good price?
At launch, $949 was a reasonable saving on a newly released MacBook Air, but a 5% cut was not an unusually deep markdown. Later deal coverage documented the 13-inch M4 Air at $899 during an Amazon Memorial Day sale in 2025, so the Spring Sale price was not the lowest price documented in the cited coverage. Tom’s Guide reported the later $899 offer.
Those historical prices are useful context, not a prediction of what a retailer charges now. As of August 2026, the March 2025 offer is long over; do not assume a search result or old product page reflects a current price.
How it compares with the M5 MacBook Air
Apple announced the M5 MacBook Air in March 2026 in 13- and 15-inch sizes. The 13-inch model’s announced U.S. starting price was $1,099, and the M5 generation starts with 512GB of storage. Apple’s M5 announcement is the reference for those launch details.

For a present-day purchase, compare actual prices for equivalent storage and condition rather than choosing by chip generation alone. A substantially cheaper M4 can still suit everyday work, study and general use. The M5 is more compelling when the price gap is small, particularly for someone who would otherwise pay extra to move an M4 from 256GB to 512GB. The M4 deal’s original $949 price is not, by itself, a reason to buy one now.

The 13-inch Air is a sensible fit for students, office users and people who prioritize a portable, quiet computer for browsing, video calls and routine productivity. It can also handle light photo and video work. Buyers upgrading from an older Intel Mac may find it a substantial change, though the experience depends on their applications and workload.

When the 15-inch model makes more sense
Apple also sold the M4 Air in a 15-inch size. Its larger screen can be more comfortable for split-screen work and media, while the 13-inch model is easier to carry. The original $949 deal described here was for the 13-inch configuration; the cited price should not be applied to the 15-inch model.
What to check before buying an Amazon listing
Product-family listings can combine configurations and conditions. Before purchasing any current offer, confirm the details on the actual listing and at checkout:
- Configuration: M4, M5 or another chip; 13-inch or 15-inch; memory amount; and 256GB or 512GB storage.
- Seller and condition: Who sells and ships it, and whether it is new, renewed, used or open-box. The 2025 deal report does not establish these details.
- Price and terms: Final checkout price, delivery date, return deadline and any restocking terms.
- Warranty and extras: Confirm warranty eligibility and whether AppleCare+ is available for that device and region rather than assuming coverage.
- Fit: Check color, keyboard layout and whether the computer is an imported regional model.
The deal figures above are U.S. prices before sales tax. Availability, taxes, shipping, keyboard layouts and warranty terms can differ by country and listing.
