An e-reader is rarely just a screen purchase. You are also choosing a book store, a library-borrowing system, a file format workflow, and—if you want color or handwriting—a more expensive category of device. The best value depends on which of those you will actually use.
For most buyers, the Kobo Libra Colour is the strongest all-around choice in 2026. The 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite is the better pick for readers already invested in Amazon, while the 11th-generation Kindle keeps the entry price close to $110. Kobo’s Clara BW is the value choice for a waterproof black-and-white reader outside Amazon’s ecosystem.

Best overall: Kobo Libra Colour
The $259.99 Kobo Libra Colour is the most versatile conventional reader in this group. Its 7-inch Kaleido 3 display shows black-and-white content at 300 ppi and color at 150 ppi. That makes it useful for comics, cookbooks, travel guides, highlighted passages, and book covers, but color pages will not look as crisp as monochrome text.

- BROWSE & READ EBOOKS IN FULL COLOR - Book covers, comics, graphic novels, illustrations, note-taking and more come to life. No glare in sunlight, no notifications - just you and your eBooks in full-color
- YOUR JOURNAL, DAILY PLANNER AND MORE - Dive into your stories with colorful markups. With Kobo Stylus 2* compatibility (*sold separately), annotate, highlight, and note take your eBooks in color
- READ COMFORTABLY, ALWAYS - Ergonomically designed with page-turn buttons, left/right screen rotation, full font size and margin customization, and landscape mode
- IPX8 WATERPROOF EREADER - Full waterproof protection and meets requirements of IPX8 rating - waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 meters of water
- BETTER BY DESIGN - Thoughtfully made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection
It also combines features that are difficult to find together: physical page-turn buttons, IPX8 water resistance, warm front lighting, Dark Mode, landscape reading, Bluetooth audiobook support, and built-in OverDrive/Libby integration. Its 32 GB storage is more than enough for a typical ebook collection and leaves room for comics and audiobooks. Kobo claims up to 40 days of battery life.
The financial catch is the price. Kobo raised the Libra Colour by $30 in May 2026, and the optional Kobo Stylus brings the package to approximately $330. The stylus is not included with the base reader, must be charged separately, and the writing area is small compared with a dedicated digital notebook. Buy it for occasional annotations, not as a low-cost replacement for a full-size note-taking tablet.
Best Kindle: 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite
The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite remains the sensible Kindle for most adults. It costs approximately $159.99 in standard form and has a 7-inch, 300-ppi display, adjustable warm light, USB-C charging, IPX8 water resistance, and a battery claim of up to 12 weeks.
Amazon lists the current 12th-generation Paperwhite at 16 GB total storage, with approximately 11.5 GB available to the user. Some comparison tables still show 6 GB, but that figure should be treated as outdated or erroneous for the current model.
The $199.99 Signature Edition adds 32 GB storage, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting front light. Those extras are convenient, but the standard Paperwhite is the better value unless you store many audiobooks, want wireless charging, or strongly prefer automatic brightness adjustment. Neither Paperwhite has a color display or page-turn buttons.
Best budget reader: 11th-generation Kindle
At approximately $109.99, the 11th-generation Kindle is the lowest-cost way into Amazon’s current Kindle ecosystem. It has a 6-inch, 300-ppi screen, 16 GB storage, USB-C, adjustable front lighting, and a battery claim of up to six weeks. It weighs about 5.56 ounces, making it particularly easy to carry.

- BROWSE & READ EBOOKS IN FULL COLOR - Book covers, comics, graphic novels, illustrations, note-taking and more come to life. No glare in sunlight, no notifications - just you and your eBooks in full-color
There are meaningful omissions at this price. The light has no warm-color setting or automatic adjustment, and the device is not waterproof. The 6-inch display can also feel cramped if you use large fonts, read PDFs, or want fewer page turns. Spending roughly $50 more for the Paperwhite buys a larger screen, warm light, water resistance, and substantially longer claimed battery life.
Choose the basic Kindle when portability and the lowest upfront price matter more than reading comfort. It is not the best bargain if you expect to keep the device for years and will quickly want the Paperwhite’s missing features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest budget color reader: Kobo Clara Colour
The $179.99 Kobo Clara Colour is the most affordable recommendation for readers who specifically want color E Ink. Its 6-inch display uses the same 300-ppi black-and-white and 150-ppi color pattern as the Libra Colour. It includes 16 GB storage, warm ComfortLight PRO lighting, Dark Mode, waterproofing, Bluetooth audiobook support, and OverDrive/Libby integration. Kobo claims up to 42 days of battery life.
The Clara Colour has no physical page-turn buttons, so you navigate by tapping or swiping. It also does not support the Kobo Stylus. Its color is best viewed as an enhancement for diagrams, covers, comics, and occasional illustrations—not a reason to pay more if nearly everything you read is plain text.
Kobo raised this model from $159.99 to $179.99 in 2026. That makes the $159.99 Kobo Clara BW worth serious consideration for readers who do not need color.
Best black-and-white value: Kobo Clara BW
The Kobo Clara BW costs $159.99 and uses a 6-inch Carta 1300 HD display. It is waterproof, has adjustable ComfortLight PRO lighting and Dark Mode, and includes 16 GB storage. Kobo also says the body uses ocean-bound and recycled plastic and provides repair support through iFixit, including parts and instructions.

This is the better fit than a budget Kindle for someone who wants to avoid Amazon, borrow books directly through a compatible library, or manage common open formats. Kobo supports EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, MOBI, CBZ, CBR, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TXT, HTML, and RTF. That does not mean every file will display perfectly, but it provides a more flexible starting point for personal documents and comics.
The Clara BW is not a premium reader: there is no color, stylus input, or physical page-turn button. Its value comes from the basics it gets right, not from extra hardware.
Kobo versus Kindle: the ecosystem can cost more than the hardware
The cheapest device is not necessarily the cheapest ownership choice. Before buying, check where you already purchase books, how often you borrow from a library, and whether your existing files are DRM-protected.
Library borrowing
Compatible Kobo models offer built-in OverDrive/Libby support. On a supported device, the setup path is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Home screen → More → Settings.
- Select OverDrive/Libby.
- Tap Get started.
- Sign in with your library details while connected to Wi-Fi.
Supported models include the Libra Colour, Clara Colour, Clara BW, Sage, and Elipsa 2E. The feature is available only in specified countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, and not every local library or title will work through Kobo.
Kindle borrowing through Libby is available for U.S. public libraries. In the Libby app or a participating library website, select Read With Kindle and complete delivery through Amazon. That can be perfectly convenient for a U.S. borrower, but it is not equivalent to Kobo’s built-in support across several countries.

Personal files and sideloading
Kobo directly supports a broad range of file types. DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files with an .acsm extension require Adobe Digital Editions. Social-DRM files can generally be read without it.
Kindle accepts EPUB files through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service, but Amazon converts them before delivery. As of January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download EPUB and PDF files for eligible DRM-free Kindle books from Manage Your Content and Devices. This does not include Kindle Unlimited or other borrowed titles, and publisher DRM changes can affect future downloads within 24–72 hours.

Neither platform should be assumed to play any audiobook file you happen to own. Kobo audiobook support is primarily tied to audiobooks purchased through the Kobo Store or obtained through Kobo Plus. Kindle audiobook access is similarly connected to Amazon’s services and compatible content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are color e-readers worth the extra money?
Color is worth paying for if you read comics, illustrated nonfiction, recipes, children’s books, textbooks, or documents where colored diagrams carry information. It is a weak value upgrade for novels and other mostly black-and-white books.
Do not compare color resolution with the 300 ppi figure used for monochrome text. The Kobo Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Kindle Colorsoft render color at 150 ppi, while black-and-white content reaches 300 ppi. Color images can look softer and may take longer to process.
Amazon’s Colorsoft is another option, with reported prices of approximately $250 for the standard model and $280 for the Signature Edition. The standard version has 16 GB, while the Signature has 32 GB, auto-adjusting light, and wireless charging. Neither has physical page-turn buttons or stylus support. Because Amazon prices change frequently, compare the checkout price with the Kobo Libra Colour before deciding.

When a large writing device makes sense
The third-generation front-lit Kindle Scribe has an 11-inch, 300-ppi display, 32- or 64-GB storage, a weight of approximately 400 grams, and a battery claim of up to 12 weeks. Newer software adds AI handwriting summaries and AI search across notes. It is not waterproof and is inconvenient for one-handed reading. The 2024 second-generation Scribe may be a better value if your main need is reading plus note-taking rather than the newest AI features.
The Kobo Elipsa 2E costs $399.99 in Kobo’s current U.S. lineup, includes a Stylus 2, and has a 10.3-inch black-and-white display with 32 GB storage. Kobo does not identify it as waterproof on the current product listing.
For a finance-conscious buyer, these devices are justified only when handwriting, PDF markup, or a large page is central to the purchase. If the main goal is reading novels, a $110–$260 reader is a much more efficient use of the budget.
How to choose without overspending
- Set the real budget. Include a case, and add the stylus cost if you are considering the Libra Colour. The base price is not the complete package.
- Decide whether color solves a real problem. If not, compare the Clara BW or Paperwhite instead.
- Check your library before choosing Kindle. Kindle delivery is limited to U.S. public libraries, while Kobo’s built-in OverDrive support depends on country and library compatibility.
- Audit your existing books. A large collection in one store can make switching inconvenient, even when another device has better hardware.
- Pay for features you will use repeatedly. Waterproofing and warm lighting affect daily reading; wireless charging and extra storage are more situational.
- Use the screen size as a comfort decision. The basic Kindle and Clara models are portable, but a 7-inch Paperwhite or Libra is easier for large fonts and longer sessions.
Bottom-line recommendations by buyer
| If you are… | Buy… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Buying one reader for mixed content | Kobo Libra Colour | Best feature balance, with buttons, waterproofing, color, and library support |
| Already buying most books from Amazon | 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite | Comfortable 7-inch hardware without paying Signature pricing unnecessarily |

FAQ
Is the Kobo Libra Colour worth $259.99?
It is worth the premium if you will use color, physical page-turn buttons, waterproofing, library borrowing, or 32 GB storage. If you mainly read novels, the Kobo Clara BW or Kindle Paperwhite provides better value.
Which is better for library books, Kobo or Kindle?
Kobo has built-in OverDrive/Libby support on compatible models in several countries. Kindle library delivery through Libby is limited to U.S. public libraries and normally requires choosing Read With Kindle in Libby or on the library website.
How much storage does the 2024 Kindle have?
The 11th-generation 2024 Kindle has 16 GB total storage. Amazon lists approximately 11.5 GB available to the user for the 2024 Kindle and 12th-generation Paperwhite.
Do color e-readers have 300-ppi color?
No. Current models such as the Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara Colour, and Kindle Colorsoft render black-and-white content at 300 ppi but color at 150 ppi.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, get the Kobo Libra Colour if you want the broadest feature set and do not mind paying $259.99. Choose the 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite if Amazon is already your preferred store. For the lowest sensible price, choose the 11th-generation Kindle; for a waterproof, non-Amazon alternative, choose the Kobo Clara BW.
