Samsung led global smartphone shipments in April–June 2024, with 53.7 million units, while Xiaomi grew fastest among the top three and Huawei posted the largest year-over-year increase among the top ten. Omdia estimated that all ten ranked makers shipped more phones than a year earlier, even as several shipped fewer than in the previous quarter or fell in rank. The figures are historical preliminary shipment estimates, not a ranking of phone quality, company revenue, or consumer sales.
Top 10 smartphone makers in Q2 2024
Omdia’s preliminary report, released August 2, 2024, estimated global smartphone shipments at 290.3 million units in Q2 2024, up 9.3% year over year and down 3.2% from Q1. The table combines Omdia’s shipment estimates and year-over-year changes with rounded market shares reproduced by TelecomLead. Shares are approximate and do not sum to 100% because they are rounded and cover only the ten listed makers.
| Rank | Maker or group | Shipments | Approx. global share | Year-over-year change | Quarterly context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Samsung | 53.7 million | 18% | +0.7% | Down 11.2% from Q1 |
| 2 | Apple | 45.6 million | 16% | +5.6% | Down from 50.7 million in Q1 |
| 3 | Xiaomi | 42.3 million | 15% | +27.4% | Strongest growth among the top three |
| 4 | vivo | 26.0 million | 9% | +16.6% | Rose from sixth to fourth |
| 5 | Transsion | 25.5 million | 9% | +4.1% | Below its Q4 2023 peak of 30.1 million |
| 6 | Oppo Group | 25.2 million | 9% | +1% | Overseas growth offset a decline in China |
| 7 | Honor | 15.5 million | 5% | +9.9% | Down from Q1 |
| 8 | Motorola | 13.5 million | 5% | +29.2% | Rose from ninth to eighth |
| 9 | Realme | 12.3 million | 4% | +21.8% | Rebounded, with stronger Indian-market shipments |
| 10 | Huawei | 11.7 million | 4% | +58.1% | Fastest year-over-year growth; down from Q1 |
Shipment figures, growth rates, and ranking context are from Omdia’s Q2 2024 report. Omdia’s page contains an apparent typo in the Motorola comparison period; the reported 29.2% increase is a year-over-year figure, as reflected in the ranking data.
What changed in the rankings?
Xiaomi narrowed the gap with Apple
Apple shipped 45.6 million units and Xiaomi 42.3 million, a difference of 3.3 million. Their rounded shares were 16% and 15%. Xiaomi’s 27.4% annual growth was far faster than Apple’s 5.6%, but Xiaomi remained third in Omdia’s Q2 ranking rather than overtaking Apple.

vivo jumped two places
vivo rose from sixth to fourth with 26 million shipments, ahead of Transsion and Oppo Group. Its shipments increased 13% from Q1 and 16.6% from Q2 2023. Omdia’s release does not give a product-by-product explanation for the jump, so the ranking change alone should not be treated as proof of a specific model’s success.
Motorola climbed while Huawei grew fastest
Motorola moved from ninth to eighth, while Huawei ranked tenth. Those positions can coexist with Huawei’s 58.1% year-over-year growth: Huawei’s 11.7 million units were still well below Motorola’s 13.5 million. A percentage increase measures change from a prior base, not the number of units shipped or a vendor’s rank.

Who was up, and who was actually down?
All ten makers in Omdia’s table recorded year-over-year shipment growth. So “down” does not mean any of these companies shipped fewer phones than in Q2 2023. It refers to sequential declines, a fall from a recent peak, or a lower place in the ranking.
- Up year over year: all ten vendors, from Samsung’s 0.7% to Huawei’s 58.1%.
- Down from Q1: Samsung, Apple, Honor, and Huawei. Samsung’s shipments fell 11.2% from Q1; Omdia attributed this primarily to seasonality after a strong first quarter. Apple’s Q2 is typically its smallest quarter in the iPhone launch cycle, so its sequential decline is not by itself evidence of a worsening annual result.
- Below a recent peak: Transsion shipped 25.5 million in Q2, below its 30.1 million peak in Q4 2023.
- Down in rank: Huawei fell in the ranking from Q1, while Motorola moved up from ninth to eighth.
These comparisons answer different questions: year-over-year growth compares Q2 with the same quarter a year earlier; quarter-over-quarter movement compares Q2 with the immediately preceding quarter; rank orders makers by shipment volume in the period.

Why the headline growth rates need context
Huawei’s growth came from a smaller shipment base
Huawei had the largest percentage increase in the top ten, but shipped 11.7 million units, compared with Samsung’s 53.7 million. Omdia linked Huawei’s recovery to successive quarterly growth and launches including the Mate 60 Pro and Pura 70 series. The percentage is striking, but it does not mean Huawei shipped the most devices or led the market.
Samsung led volume, not every measure of performance
Samsung remained No. 1 by estimated global shipments and held an approximate 18% share, yet its year-over-year growth was 0.7%, much slower than Xiaomi’s. A shipment ranking does not establish which company earned more, sold more expensive phones, or performed best for investors.

Transsion represents several consumer brands
Transsion is the group behind Tecno, Infinix, and itel. Its 25.5 million shipments placed it fifth. Omdia associated the group’s expansion with low-end demand and growth in emerging markets including India, Pakistan, and Russia; those global results do not show that Transsion grew equally in every country.

Omdia’s interpretation was that the market was polarizing: low-end and high-end phones were taking a larger share of shipments while the mid-range, especially the roughly $250–$600 segment, was under pressure. This is Omdia analyst Jusy Hong’s explanation of the market, not a rule proven for every country or every vendor. It helps explain why businesses with strong budget or flagship positions could fare differently from those more exposed to the middle.

The broader market was recovering, but not booming. Q2 was the third consecutive quarter with year-over-year shipment growth, and shipments still declined 3.2% from Q1. Omdia described the industry as settling toward more sustainable shipment levels rather than presenting the quarter as an across-the-board surge.
Regional results complicate the global picture
- Apple: global shipments increased year over year, while shipments in China declined. That is a regional warning sign, not evidence that its entire global result was negative or that China alone explains the quarter.
- Oppo Group: overseas growth offset a decline in China, according to Omdia. The group’s global rank does not reveal the balance of its performance in every market.
- Transsion: Omdia pointed to emerging-market expansion, including India, Pakistan, and Russia, in describing its growth.
- Realme: shipments reached 12.3 million, versus 10.1 million in both Q1 2024 and Q2 2023; Omdia linked the rise to recovery in India.
What this ranking does—and does not—measure
Omdia’s figures are preliminary estimates of global smartphone shipments by maker or group for April through June 2024. They are not audited company-reported sales or measured consumer sell-through. Shipments can differ from the number of phones consumers buy in the same period.
Quick Recap
- The table ranks shipment volume, not revenue, profit, active users, product quality, customer satisfaction, premium-market share, or best-selling individual models.
- Global totals can conceal regional gains and losses, as Apple’s China result illustrates.
- Group labels matter: “Oppo Group” is not necessarily the same as the Oppo retail brand alone, and Transsion includes Tecno, Infinix, and itel.
- Analyst firms can use different methodologies, channel definitions, and reporting periods. Omdia’s estimates should not be blended directly with figures from Canalys, IDC, or Counterpoint as if they were one series.
