Seattle startup adyn announced a $2.5 million seed round on April 19, 2021, co-led by Lux Capital and M13, with 23andMe co-founder and then-CEO Anne Wojcicki among the angel investors. The company was developing an at-home test and care service to help inform contraceptive choices. That planned product later launched in 2022; adyn now lists its Birth Control Test for $369. Its testing and recommendations are decision support, not a guarantee that side effects can be prevented.
What adyn announced in 2021
The funding announcement was published on April 19, 2021. Lux Capital and M13 co-led the $2.5 million seed round. Other participants included Civilization Ventures, Concrete Rose Capital, Y Combinator, Madrona Pioneer Fund, Ascend VC, and angel investors including Anne Wojcicki of 23andMe, Nish Bhat of Color Genomics, Qasar Younis of Applied Intuition, and Ashley Mayer of Glossier. GeekWire’s coverage and adyn’s announcement described a planned product, not a service already available for purchase.
Wojcicki’s participation helped draw attention to the round because of her role at 23andMe, a consumer genetics company. She was identified as an angel investor; that participation is not evidence of clinical validation or regulatory approval.
What problem was the company trying to address?
Choosing contraception can involve balancing effectiveness, health history, personal preferences, and possible side effects. People may need to compare pills, IUDs, implants, shots, rings, and patches, while a brief appointment may leave limited time to discuss their concerns and goals.

Adyn framed the process as too dependent on trial and error. Its 2021 funding announcement said 52% of women tried four or more birth-control methods before finding one that worked for them. That is a company-reported statistic, not an independently established figure in the sources cited here. The company also pointed to concerns including acne, weight changes, mood symptoms, blood clots, and depression; those concerns do not mean a particular method will cause those outcomes for a given person.
How the test is designed to work
The original 2021 plan
At the time of the funding announcement, adyn described a planned at-home Birth Control Optimization Test. The concept combined hormone and genetic testing with a person’s medical history, followed by personalized recommendations, a telemedicine consultation, and prescription fulfillment. The aim was to inform contraceptive selection, not to have a test independently issue a prescription.

The product listed today
Adyn’s current product page describes a saliva sample for DNA analysis and a finger-prick blood sample to measure six hormone levels: AMH, E2, SHBG, FSH, LH, and DHEA-S. The company says its analysis also considers genetic risk related to blood clots and depression, medical history, prior experiences with birth control, and goals such as period management, acne treatment, or a lower-maintenance method. It says samples are processed by CLIA-certified laboratories.
Adyn says hormone collection should take place on day three of the menstrual cycle. After valid samples are received, the company gives a typical results window of two to six weeks and says the average is about three weeks. The service includes a 25-minute virtual visit with a licensed medical provider trained in contraceptive counseling. Recommendations may cover pills, IUDs, shots, rings, implants, and patches.

- Highly Sensitive - Levels of hCG as low as 25 mIU/ml can be detected within 3 to 5 minutes.
- Easy to Use Design - Each test is sealed in individual pouch. It can be carried anywhere with privacy protection.

- Reliable & Trustworthy – Each batch is rigorously tested for accuracy, sensitivity, and consistency, giving you peace of mind during one of the most important moments of your life.
The company describes the test as assessing risk and supporting a conversation about options. Its materials do not establish that the test can predict with certainty who will develop a side effect or prevent blood clots, depression, or other adverse outcomes.
Who founded adyn?
Adyn was founded by Elizabeth Ruzzo, Ph.D., a genetics and genomics researcher with an academic background at Duke University. Ruzzo said she conceived the company after experiencing severe mental-health effects following a birth-control prescription change. Her account helps explain the problem she wanted the company to address; it is not clinical evidence that adyn’s test prevents suicidal ideation or other mental-health outcomes. The company’s founder story also connects its mission to gaps in medical research, including representation by sex and race.

- 2019: Adyn’s 2021 funding announcement said the company was founded in 2019.
- April 19, 2021: The company announced its $2.5 million seed round and described a planned test and waitlist.
- May 23, 2022: Adyn announced the launch of The Birth Control Test, combining genetic and endocrine testing with virtual care and prescription delivery. The launch announcement used the phrase “designed to prevent” in its headline; that wording should not be mistaken for independent proof of prevention.
- August 18, 2026: Adyn’s product page listed the test at $369 and described current purchasing terms and state availability.
What it costs and who can buy it
As listed on adyn’s product page on August 18, 2026, the test costs $369. The company says it accepts HSA and FSA payments but not insurance for the test itself, and offers free shipping. It lists availability in the United States except New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.
The listed price is for the test and included service, not necessarily for contraception itself. Medication, IUD insertion, implant placement, or other procedure-related care can involve separate costs. A recommendation also does not guarantee that a chosen method is available through a person’s insurance or preferred provider.

What the test can—and cannot—establish
Adyn combines laboratory measurements, genetic analysis, personal history, and clinician counseling in one workflow. That may give a patient and provider more structured information for a contraceptive discussion. But company descriptions of a test’s design are different from independently demonstrated clinical outcomes.
The available product and funding materials do not establish whether the testing improves contraceptive outcomes, reduces discontinuation or adverse effects, or performs equally across racial and ancestral groups. They also do not specify which genetic variants are assessed, how uncertain findings are handled, or how genetic data are stored, used, deleted, or shared. The materials cited here do not establish FDA clearance or approval for the whole service or its predictive claims; a statement that laboratories are CLIA-certified is not the same thing as FDA approval.
The test is not a substitute for clinical assessment of contraindications or serious symptoms, and home testing alone does not determine medical eligibility. Adyn says its process includes a licensed provider and follows the CDC’s Medical Eligibility Criteria. Because the stated turnaround is measured in weeks, it is also not a same-day option for someone seeking immediate contraception or urgent care.
How it compares with other ways to get contraceptive care
The $369 service is one option for people who want lab testing alongside counseling. A conventional primary-care or OB-GYN visit, reproductive-health clinic, general telehealth service, or pharmacist-based service may be a better fit depending on access, cost, state rules, and whether a person needs an examination or a device placed. Those options do not necessarily include adyn-style hormone and genetic testing, and their availability and costs vary.
