Hackers Tried to Extort Globe Life After Accessing Customer Data: What 850,000 Notices Mean

Globe Life said an attacker obtained data on about 5,000 people and notified 850,000 additional people because their exposure could not be ruled out.

Globe Life said an attacker accessed customer-related data and tried to extort the company in 2024. Investigators verified that information belonging to about 5,000 people was obtained. Later, Globe Life notified about 850,000 additional people because it could not determine whether their records in the same databases had also been taken. That does not mean the company confirmed all 850,000 were victims. Globe Life said the incident did not involve ransomware or disrupt operations, and later said it did not pay the demand.

What happened in the Globe Life data incident?

Globe Life Inc. disclosed the extortion attempt on October 17, 2024, in an SEC filing. The company said an unknown threat actor sought money in exchange for not disclosing information held by Globe Life and independent agents. The incident involved data associated with American Income Life Insurance Company, a Globe Life subsidiary.

Globe Life later said investigators verified that the attacker obtained personally identifiable information belonging to approximately 5,000 people. The data was held in databases maintained by a small number of independent agency owners, rather than necessarily being drawn from one centralized company database, according to the company’s amended filing.

A separate issue disclosed in June 2024 involved Globe Life reviewing possible access-permission and identity-management vulnerabilities in a web portal after a state insurance regulator’s inquiry. The company’s June filing does not establish that this review was the same incident as the later extortion event.

Why were about 850,000 additional people notified?

The two figures describe different levels of certainty. Globe Life said it had verified the attacker obtained data for about 5,000 people. It could not determine whether information for other people in the same databases had also been acquired, so it notified approximately 850,000 additional individuals as potentially affected. The larger number is not a confirmed count of records stolen.

Figure What it means
Approximately 5,000 people Globe Life said investigators verified that the threat actor obtained their personally identifiable information.
Approximately 850,000 additional people Globe Life said their information was in potentially compromised databases, but it could not confirm whether the attacker obtained their records.

The distinction is central to interpreting the notification total. A notice may mean that a person’s information was in a database whose exposure could not be ruled out; it does not by itself establish that the attacker accessed that person’s record.

What information may have been exposed?

Globe Life’s initial filing said the information potentially obtained included names and contact details. For some people, it also included Social Security numbers, health-related information, and insurance-policy information. The company said the information did not appear to include credit-card or banking details. It also said some additional categories claimed by the threat actor had not yet been verified.

  • Names, email addresses, phone numbers, and postal addresses
  • Dates of birth for some individuals
  • Social Security numbers for some individuals
  • Health-related and insurance-policy information

The categories can carry different risks: contact and policy details may make a scam more convincing, while a Social Security number can be used in attempts to open new accounts. The presence of health-related information does not by itself establish that HIPAA applied or that a regulator found a HIPAA violation. Plaintiffs in later lawsuits made allegations about the data and the company’s safeguards; those allegations are not court findings.

Was this ransomware, and did Globe Life pay?

Globe Life said the incident did not involve ransomware and did not interrupt systems, services, or operations. In plain terms, this was described as data theft followed by an extortion demand—not an attack in which files were encrypted to shut down the company’s systems.

In its later filing, Globe Life said it did not pay the demanded extortion amount and notified federal law enforcement. The company also said it cooperated with authorities.

What did Globe Life offer affected people?

Globe Life said it would notify affected individuals and provide credit and monitoring services. The exact terms should be taken from the notice a person received: check which data categories it lists, the enrollment deadline, the monitoring provider and coverage period, and any reimbursement terms. Do not assume that every potentially affected person received identical benefits.

Monitoring can alert you to some suspicious activity, but it does not prevent someone from trying to use your information. A credit freeze is a stronger no-cost barrier against new creditors accessing your credit file.

What legal and regulatory developments followed?

Several proposed class actions followed the disclosures. The Eastern District of Texas docket shows four related cases consolidated in April 2025 under In re Globe Life Data Breach Litigation. A separate Western District of Texas case, In re American Income Life Insurance Co. and Globe Life, Inc. Data Breach Litigation, represents another litigation track. Court dockets can change, so case status and deadlines should be checked in the Eastern District docket and the Western District docket.

A February 19, 2026 report described a proposed settlement of up to $4.66 million in one class-action matter, then awaiting preliminary court approval. That report is not proof of final approval or that every notified person is eligible for payment. Consult the court’s orders and any official settlement notice for current status, eligibility, claims deadlines, and terms.

Globe Life announced on July 24, 2025, that SEC staff did not intend to recommend an enforcement action following its investigation, according to the company’s announcement. That announcement is not a finding that no one was harmed, nor does it resolve private lawsuits.

What should you do if you received a notice?

  1. Read the notice and keep it. Check whether it says your information was confirmed as obtained or whether your record was in a database that may have been affected. Save the notice and records of any fraud-related costs.
  2. Enroll in the offered monitoring before its deadline. Use the provider and instructions in the notice, and retain confirmation of enrollment.
  3. Freeze your credit with all three bureaus. Freezes are generally free and must be placed separately with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze can be temporarily lifted when you apply for credit.
  4. Review your credit reports. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized service, and look for accounts or inquiries you do not recognize.
  5. Secure accounts with reused passwords. Change reused passwords, especially for email, financial accounts, and insurance portals, and enable multifactor authentication where available.
  6. Be alert for targeted scams. A caller or email may use real policy, health, or contact details to sound credible. Do not send money or provide additional personal information based on an unsolicited contact; verify it through an official Globe Life channel.
  7. Act promptly if you spot identity theft. Contact the relevant bank or creditor and report the issue at IdentityTheft.gov.

What remains uncertain?

Globe Life said it could not confirm whether the attacker acquired the records of the approximately 850,000 additional people it notified. The company also said some categories claimed by the attacker remained unverified. The disclosed facts do not establish that every Globe Life system was compromised, that all claimed information was published, or that every notified person experienced identity theft.
