The January 2026 appointment has since moved from plan to operation: Anthropic opened its Bengaluru office on February 16 and announced partnerships spanning software development, education, legal information, and public data.
Who is Irina Ghose?
Ghose is Anthropic’s managing director for India. Before joining the AI company, she led Microsoft India and spent 24 years at Microsoft, leaving in December 2025, according to TechCrunch.

Her remit is India operations—not Anthropic’s global business. Her enterprise experience and familiarity with Indian business and public-sector stakeholders fit a strategy focused on helping local organizations adopt Claude for substantial, operational workloads. Ghose described the target use cases as “mission-critical,” TechCrunch reported.

#1 Best Overall
Why India—and why Bengaluru?
Anthropic says India is its second-largest market for Claude.ai, after the United States, and that nearly half of Claude usage in India involves computer and mathematical tasks. The company says those uses include application development, system modernization, and production software work. These are Anthropic’s own usage claims, not independently audited market measurements.
That technical use base gives the company a route into developers, startups, large enterprises, and India’s IT-services ecosystem. Bengaluru offers a concentration of technology companies, engineering talent, startups, and enterprise-service providers. For Anthropic, the opportunity is not simply to attract more individual chatbot users: it is to help organizations integrate Claude into products and business processes.
Usage, revenue, and distribution are different measures of traction. A large user base does not automatically mean strong paid conversion, and enterprise adoption often depends on local implementation support, security reviews, procurement, and trusted partners. TechCrunch cited Appfigures estimates for September 2025 of about 767,000 Claude installs in India and $195,000 in Indian consumer spending, compared with $2.5 million in U.S. spending that month. These are third-party estimates reported by TechCrunch, not audited Anthropic financial results.
What the India team is set up to do
Anthropic says the local team will offer applied-AI expertise to enterprises, digital-native businesses, and startups building with Claude, and that it will hire locally across a range of roles. Before the office opened, TechCrunch reported job listings for startup and enterprise account executives and a partner sales manager—evidence of a commercial emphasis, though not a complete account of the team’s eventual composition.

- Developer and startup engagement: Help teams use Claude and Claude Code in software development and products.
- Applied-AI implementation: Support organizations moving from experimentation to deployed workflows.
- Local evaluation: Assess language performance and locally relevant applications, including agriculture and law.
- Recruiting: Add local staff to support these activities.
The public evidence points to a hybrid operation, but one commercially led: customer work, partnerships, developer adoption, and applied evaluation are visible priorities. Anthropic has not established publicly that Bengaluru is a major frontier-model training center.
Partnerships offer early evidence of the strategy
Anthropic’s February 16 announcement described customer projects and partnerships across commercial, public-interest, and government contexts. The examples indicate a broad adoption effort; they do not, by themselves, show the financial terms or long-term scale of each relationship.
| Organization or initiative | Announced work |
|---|---|
| Air India | Using Claude Code to help developers build custom software faster and at lower cost, according to Anthropic. |
| CRED | Reported twice-as-fast feature delivery and 10% better test coverage with Claude Code. These are company-reported case-study figures, not independent benchmarks. |
| Pratham | Piloting an AI-powered testing system with 1,500 students across 20 schools, with a stated plan to expand to 100 schools by the end of 2026. |
| Adalat AI | Supporting a WhatsApp-based legal-information service offering case updates, translation, document summaries, and document queries in Indian languages. |
| Karya, the Collective Intelligence Project, Digital Green, and other nonprofits | Contributing to domain-specific evaluation work, including agriculture and legal tasks. |
| Swiggy | Using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable actions such as grocery orders and dining reservations through Claude. |
| Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation | Supporting an MCP server for querying official national statistics. |
Anthropic also said it would provide technical expertise, mentorship, and API credits to organizations developing education-focused AI tools. The announcements do not disclose whether these projects are paid contracts, subsidized pilots, or other arrangements, so they should not be read as a measure of commercial revenue.
Local-language work is part of adoption, not proof of equal performance
Anthropic says it is working on more representative, higher-quality training data in ten widely spoken Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu. It says evaluations in areas such as agriculture and law will inform future model improvements.

Availability, fluency, factual accuracy, cultural context, legal nuance, and safety are separate measures. For organizations considering deployment, the practical test is performance on their own users’ language, domain, and risk requirements.

Anthropic later said its India run-rate revenue had doubled since the October 2025 expansion announcement. That is the company’s own figure; it does not disclose the underlying revenue amount or independently establish profitability. The distinction matters because strong technical usage can coexist with modest consumer spending, while enterprise deals may take longer to close but create more sustained use.
Rank #3
- Enterprise conversion: Do pilots become production deployments, and do customers renew?
- Partner leverage: Can IT-services firms, cloud providers, and system integrators bring Claude to more organizations than direct sales alone?
- Pricing: Can Anthropic compete in a price-sensitive market where alternatives may be discounted or bundled?
- Trust and governance: Can it satisfy customer requirements for security, data handling, and oversight?
- Developer adoption: Does Claude Code become a recurring part of engineering teams’ work?
- Local capability: Do language and sector evaluations produce measurable improvements for Indian use cases?
Enterprise focus can generate deeper, longer-lasting relationships, but it brings longer sales cycles, integration work, and procurement requirements. Partnerships can extend reach but may reduce direct control over the customer relationship. Local adaptation can improve relevance while increasing the cost of evaluation and support.
India is a competitive market, not a settled win
Anthropic’s expansion comes amid intensifying competition for Indian enterprise and developer adoption. TechCrunch contrasted the move with reported OpenAI plans for a New Delhi office. Google can draw on telecom and enterprise relationships, while Microsoft already has a substantial enterprise and cloud presence. Indian IT-services firms and telecom operators may also influence how AI tools reach businesses and consumers.

Ghose’s Microsoft background is relevant in that landscape, but it does not guarantee distribution or contracts. The available evidence supports describing India as a strategic contest; it does not establish that Anthropic has won or lost, or provide independent market-share data.
What the expansion means for organizations evaluating Claude
A local office and named partnerships can make enterprise engagement and applied-AI support more visible, but they are not substitutes for a buyer’s own technical, legal, and financial review. Organizations should assess model performance on representative work, confirm data and security terms, estimate API or subscription costs, and define how a pilot would qualify for production.
For individual and business buyers, Claude subscriptions and API access are separate. Anthropic’s support documentation explains that a paid Claude plan does not include API usage billed through the Console: Claude plan and API billing. Current plan details are listed on Anthropic’s pricing page; regional pricing and availability can vary.
