Robert Wesley Robb pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a scheme tied to an investment pitch for a cryptocurrency trading bot. The widely reported $1.5 million figure comes from an FBI affidavit described by contemporaneous news coverage—not the Justice Department’s plea announcement. The bot was promised to investors but, according to that reporting, never materialized.

What was the crypto trading bot pitch?

Robb promoted an investment opportunity involving a proposed Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) bot. In the pitch as described by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the bot was presented as a way to identify profitable opportunities in cryptocurrency markets. The Verge reported that Robb described software that would scan blockchain networks and automatically execute trades; that description was part of his pitch, not a verified demonstration of a working or profitable product.

The DOJ’s June 21, 2024 summary of court documents says Robb advertised in a social-media chat on September 4, 2023, inviting people with “$100-$200k+ sitting around” to contact him about “some next-level MEV stuff.” A prospective investor contacted him three days later. Robb allegedly set a $100,000 minimum, described very high returns, and urged a quick decision, saying the bot would be operational “soon (likely early next week).”

The Verge reported that Robb solicited funds through Telegram and other social platforms. One alleged Telegram message to a group said, “Poof, YOU’RE A MILLIONAIRE.” The accompanying pitch referred to use of the bot and investment in $RAT and NoRugz. That wording was an alleged message from Robb, not evidence that investors actually earned those returns.

How much money was collected, and what did DOJ say it was spent on?

The Verge reported that an FBI affidavit alleged Robb collected at least $1.5 million over several weeks in 2023, with most transferred to his personal bank accounts. TechTimes also reported the $1.5 million figure while citing the affidavit. The DOJ’s June 2024 announcement of Robb’s guilty plea describes the scheme and personal spending but does not state that total.

The DOJ said the vast majority of the funds went to personal expenses, including travel, gambling, cars, and luxury items. It listed these examples:

  • $204,423 for a lease on an executive suite at Denver Broncos’ Mile High Stadium.
  • $117,570 for a 2023 Jeep Wagoneer.
  • $46,914 for a Bahamas resort trip for Robb’s girlfriend and her extended family.

These are examples reported by DOJ, not a complete accounting of all funds collected or spent.

What happened to investors and the promised bot?

The Verge reported that investors interviewed by the FBI described delays and unfulfilled refund requests, and that the bot never materialized. The available accounts therefore describe an investment solicitation around a proposed product, not an operational bot whose performance can be assessed. They do not establish a precise number of investors.

What is Robb’s legal status?

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia reported that Robb pleaded guilty to wire fraud on June 21, 2024, and that Judge Anthony J. Trenga accepted the plea. The DOJ release said sentencing was scheduled for October 2, 2024, and that the offense carried a maximum possible sentence of 20 years. The release also noted that actual federal sentences are typically below statutory maximums.

The sources cited here do not establish whether sentencing occurred or what sentence was imposed. They also do not establish a restitution order, how much investors may have been repaid, or whether any funds were recovered.

How to read the $1.5 million claim

The $1.5 million figure is tied to the FBI affidavit as reported by The Verge and TechTimes. It should not be attributed to the DOJ plea release, which does not give a collection total. DOJ’s announcement independently reports Robb’s guilty plea and examples of personal spending. Keeping those claims separate avoids treating a reported affidavit figure as a total published by the department.
