That is meaningful support—not a review of a finished device or proof that it will succeed. The product’s final design, price and release date remain undisclosed in the sources cited here.
What did Laurene Powell Jobs actually endorse?
At Emerson Collective’s 2025 Demo Day, Powell Jobs interviewed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive in a session the organization listed as “Sam Altman & Jony Ive — In conversation with Laurene Powell Jobs.” The discussion gave the collaborators a public stage to talk about their hardware ambitions; it was not a product launch or a hands-on review by Powell Jobs. Emerson Collective’s event page confirms the session.
Calling this a “nod of approval” is fair only as shorthand for visible support and involvement. It should not be read as a formal statement that Powell Jobs tested or recommended a finished product.
How is Powell Jobs connected to the project?
She hosted the public conversation
Powell Jobs’ role at Demo Day was interviewer and host. The event helped present the project and its principals, but hosting alone does not establish a product endorsement.

Emerson Collective has financial ties
Emerson Collective was reported as a prospective investor in the venture by The Information. The Associated Press later included Emerson Collective among investors connected to io, the startup OpenAI agreed to acquire. That makes the organization’s connection more than event sponsorship, but it does not establish that Powell Jobs personally owns the project or disclose her individual investment.
Her relationships add visibility, not product validation
Powell Jobs is closely associated with both Altman and Ive. Combined with Emerson Collective’s reported investment involvement, that connection helps explain why she played a prominent role. It does not answer whether the device will be useful, affordable or successful.
What did OpenAI announce about Jony Ive and io?
OpenAI agreed to acquire io Products, the hardware company co-founded by Ive. The AP reported a transaction valuation of nearly $6.5 billion. OpenAI already held a 23% stake and said it would pay about $5 billion in stock for the portion it did not already own. Those figures describe the overall valuation and the additional consideration, respectively—not two separate purchase prices. The Associated Press reported the deal terms and organizational details.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The acquisition followed collaboration among Altman, Ive and LoveFrom that OpenAI said had been underway quietly since 2023. Ive would not become a standard OpenAI employee. LoveFrom was to remain independent while taking on substantial design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI and io; Peter Welinder was named to lead the io division. The arrangement is a partnership around design and hardware, not simply OpenAI hiring Ive to design a single gadget.
What is the device supposed to be?
The stated ambition is AI-focused hardware designed around interacting with AI, rather than putting ChatGPT inside the familiar phone-and-app format. Public descriptions point toward an interface less centered on screens, typing and scrolling, with an assistant that can use context and decide when information is useful. These are goals, not demonstrated capabilities or final specifications.
Altman reportedly described a screenless, pocket-sized concept in comments covered by Tom’s Guide. That description does not establish what the first product will look like. The project has also been discussed as a family of devices, so it may not amount to one standalone gadget. OpenAI and Ive have not publicly established a final product name or industrial design in the sources cited here.

What remains unknown before anyone can judge it?
The available announcements and reporting leave basic buying and usability questions unanswered:
- Form and interface: Whether the first product will be wearable, pocketable, desktop-based or something else; whether it will have a display, camera, speakers or sensors; and whether it will work without a smartphone.
- Connectivity and power: Whether it needs a separate cellular plan, how long its battery will last and how it will charge.
- Privacy and control: What data it can access, how users will know when microphones or cameras are active, and how permissions and actions can be reviewed or reversed.
- Software and cost: Whether it will support third-party applications, require a subscription, and what it will cost at retail.
- Availability: Its manufacturing partner, geographic availability and confirmed shipping date.
There is no established public retail listing, preorder or confirmed price in the sources cited here. Treat claims that it will be a necklace, pendant, speaker, glasses, headphones or direct phone replacement as speculation unless OpenAI or the project’s principals confirm them.
Why OpenAI wants its own hardware
Hardware could give OpenAI a direct interface with users instead of relying mainly on phones, browsers and operating systems controlled by other companies. The Atlantic framed the effort as part of OpenAI’s attempt to reduce that dependence and create a more direct way to deliver AI services. The Atlantic’s analysis also highlights the stakes: a device designed around an assistant could make AI more convenient, but it could place more personal context—and more of the user relationship—inside OpenAI’s ecosystem.

That is why Ive’s Apple legacy matters, but the test is not whether he can make “another iPhone.” The commercial question is whether AI offers a compelling enough reason to carry, wear or pay for another device when smartphones, earbuds, watches and smart speakers already provide voice and assistant features.

The promise: less friction
An AI-native device could reduce the need to open apps, type prompts and search through menus. If it understands relevant context and offers help at the right moment, it might make some tasks feel more natural than using a phone. But that promise depends on reliable answers and good judgment about when to speak.
The trade-off: context requires access
A device that understands someone’s day may need access to sensitive information such as messages, calendar entries, contacts, location, audio or images. Convenience therefore depends on clear permissions, understandable privacy controls and trustworthy handling of personal data. A screenless interface also removes familiar ways to inspect settings, confirm actions, see status indicators and recover from mistakes.

The execution risks
- Incorrect answers delivered with unwarranted confidence, or interruptions at the wrong time.
- Poor performance in noisy settings or when network access is unreliable.
- Unclear recording indicators or no simple way to understand why the device took an action.
- Battery, heat, manufacturing or connectivity limits that constrain the product’s ambitions.
- A recurring subscription or premium price without enough benefit over a phone and existing wearables.
- Dependence on OpenAI’s model quality, service pricing or policies, leaving the hardware experience vulnerable to changes in the software behind it.
Earlier AI hardware is a caution, not a direct prediction. The Atlantic points to Humane’s $700 AI Pin, which failed to gain traction and later shut down. Its outcome shows that an AI-first story alone does not make a new device useful; it does not prove that OpenAI and Ive will encounter the same result.
What Powell Jobs’ backing does—and does not—prove
Powell Jobs’ role, Emerson Collective’s reported investment connection and OpenAI’s acquisition of io make this a serious hardware initiative with influential participants. They establish support, resources and ambition. They do not establish that the product has been finalized, that it will replace a smartphone, or that consumers will want it. The decisive evidence will be the device itself: what it can do, how it handles privacy and control, and whether it offers enough value to justify another piece of technology.
