D-ID acquired Berlin-based explainer-video company Simpleshow in a deal announced September 16, 2025. The purchase price was not disclosed. The acquisition brings Simpleshow’s enterprise storytelling platform together with D-ID’s AI avatars and real-time visual agents, with the aim of turning scripted corporate videos into interactive experiences. D-ID’s later company materials describe the acquisition as completed, and its April 2026 product announcement points to an integration into the Simpleshow platform.

What happened in the D-ID–Simpleshow deal?

D-ID announced the acquisition on September 16, 2025. The companies did not disclose the purchase price or other financial terms. At announcement, D-ID said the merger was expected to complete in Q4 2025, subject to regulatory approval. D-ID’s current company materials describe Simpleshow as acquired in September 2025, so the transaction should now be understood as completed rather than merely proposed.

The combined business operates under the D-ID brand. The acquisition’s stated rationale was to pair D-ID’s digital-human and avatar technology with Simpleshow’s enterprise explainer-video platform. The original announcement and timeline are detailed in D-ID’s announcement.

What did Simpleshow bring to D-ID?

Simpleshow began as a Berlin-based business-video agency and developed into a software platform for creating explainer videos. TechCrunch reports that it was founded in 2008 and introduced an early text-to-video tool for clients in 2017. The company’s format emphasizes structured storytelling: users turn information into a script and an illustrated, narrated video.

D-ID said Simpleshow served organizations in more than 70 countries and had more than 1,500 corporate customers, including many large enterprises and Fortune companies. Those are company-reported customer and reach figures; they do not disclose active usage, retention, revenue, or adoption of D-ID features. TechCrunch reported customer names including Adobe, Airbus, Microsoft, Bayer, HP, T-Mobile, McDonald’s, eBay, and Deutsche Bank, but those references do not establish that each organization uses the combined platform. TechCrunch also reported more than $20 million in Simpleshow funding, citing Crunchbase data.

How do the two products fit together?

D-ID Simpleshow
AI-generated presenters, avatars, and real-time visual agents Explainer-video creation and structured storytelling
Conversational interaction and personalized dialogue Scripted, reviewable content built with templates and illustrations
APIs and integrations for digital-human experiences Enterprise communication, training, and content workflows

The practical distinction is between a video whose content is fixed before publication and an agent that responds dynamically to a viewer. A scripted explainer can be reviewed in advance; a conversational agent must answer questions in real time, which makes approved information sources, controls, and escalation paths important. The acquisition’s strategic promise is to connect those formats: create an explainer, then let viewers ask questions, take a quiz, or practise a scenario with a digital presenter.

D-ID described potential applications including employee onboarding, compliance and learning, sales enablement, product education, customer support, internal communications, and marketing. These were strategic use cases, not proof that every capability was broadly deployed at the time of the deal. TechCrunch reported that D-ID had raised approximately $60 million by the acquisition announcement; that funding figure is not the company’s valuation or the deal price.

What evidence of integration has appeared since the acquisition?

On April 23, 2026, D-ID announced Agentic Videos, describing the capability as integrated into the Simpleshow platform. D-ID said the product adds knowledge, memory, a digital-human interface, and agentic functions to video, for uses such as training, customer engagement, and internal communications. This is the clearest public post-acquisition evidence of product integration in the available company materials. The announcement does not, by itself, establish customer adoption rates or measured business outcomes.

What did D-ID tell existing customers?

In a customer-facing post dated September 17, 2025, D-ID said that existing products, access, integrations, contracts, pricing models, service-level agreements, support contacts, data commitments, privacy terms, and security arrangements would remain unchanged at that time. It also said new Simpleshow capabilities would be introduced gradually and that customers could continue using D-ID independently. That was the company’s stated policy at the time, not a guarantee that every interface, plan, or contract remains unchanged today. Existing customers should confirm current terms and migration options directly with D-ID. See D-ID’s customer update.

What does the acquisition mean for enterprise buyers?

The deal gives D-ID a broader product direction: from generating avatar videos and visual agents toward a platform that can combine prepared communications with two-way interaction. That could be useful when an organization wants the same material to explain a policy, answer follow-up questions, or guide a learner through a role-play. Whether that is better than a conventional video depends on the task; adding conversation also adds operational and governance requirements.

  • Accuracy: A dynamic agent can give an incorrect answer in a way a pre-approved video cannot. Ask whether responses can be restricted to approved documents, logged, reviewed, and escalated when the system is unsure.
  • Privacy and control: For HR, training, or customer material, check data retention, residency, model-training policies, access controls, audit logs, and third-party model dependencies in the current contract.
  • Cost: A finished video has a relatively bounded production cost; interactive use may add expenses tied to conversation volume, inference, speech, streaming, and storage. Confirm how usage and credits are calculated.
  • Usability: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, latency, pronunciation, accessibility, and user acceptance—not just how realistic the avatar looks. Ask about captions, transcripts, keyboard access, and screen-reader support.
  • Fit: If the need is a simple, deterministic explainer, a scripted video may be enough. If viewers need personalized answers or practice, an interactive agent may justify the added complexity.

Buyers should also confirm whether interactive features are included in their current subscription, what can be exported or embedded, whether conversations are searchable, and what happens when the agent cannot answer. D-ID’s April 2026 announcement says Agentic Videos are available across subscription plans through a credit-based model, but it does not provide a complete public price table.

What remains undisclosed?

The public materials do not state the purchase price, deal structure, cash-versus-stock consideration, Simpleshow’s revenue or profitability, post-deal retention, or the number of Simpleshow employees transferred. TechCrunch reported an approximately 140-person combined workforce and plans to consolidate offices in Berlin, Tel Aviv, and the United States; D-ID’s public materials do not provide a complete post-acquisition organization chart.

The sources also do not establish a product-by-product retirement or migration schedule, current standalone Simpleshow pricing, or the commercial adoption of integrated features. D-ID’s current leadership page lists former Simpleshow executives Karsten Boehrs as president and COO, Dr. Sandra Boehrs as CMO, Torsten Friedrich as CRO, and Susanne Ilemann as SVP of Marketing Strategy & BI. That indicates leadership continuity, but not the full organizational structure. See D-ID’s company page and TechCrunch.

How does the deal fit the competitive market?

TechCrunch identified Synthesia and Soul Machines among competitors in enterprise avatars and digital humans. The products are not interchangeable by default: buyers should compare whether they need scripted video production, conversational interaction, or both, then assess governance, integrations, languages, accessibility, and usage costs. The acquisition alone does not establish that D-ID is superior to either competitor.

For vendor comparison, consult the companies’ own sites: Synthesia and Soul Machines. Current pricing and feature parity should be confirmed directly with vendors rather than inferred from acquisition coverage.
