Credit Karma is a legitimate, free service for viewing Equifax and TransUnion credit reports and VantageScore 3.0 scores, tracking certain report changes, and browsing financial-product offers. It is not a scam, but it is not a complete view of your credit or a guarantee of identity protection. Its scores are not FICO scores, its described monitoring does not include Experian, and it may earn a commission when members are approved for recommended products.
Is Credit Karma a scam?
No. Credit Karma describes a service that provides access to credit reports and scores, monitors certain changes, and recommends financial products. Its core credit-viewing and monitoring features are offered without a subscription fee, according to Credit Karma. Free access does not mean the service has no commercial incentive: Credit Karma says it typically receives a commission when a member is approved for a recommended product.
That commission is a reason to compare an offer’s rates, fees, eligibility terms, and alternatives yourself. It does not establish that a specific recommendation is unsuitable. Credit Karma’s “Approval Odds” are estimates, not promises that a lender will approve an application.
What does Credit Karma provide for free?
Credit Karma says members can access Equifax and TransUnion credit reports and scores, monitor changes to those reports, and see personalized recommendations for products such as credit cards, loans, and insurance. Its official article, “Is Credit Karma a Scam?”, updated September 21, 2026, describes its offering as “free credit reports, free credit scores, free credit monitoring and identity monitoring” (Credit Karma).

Free access applies to the core features described; it does not make every recommendation a good deal or make the service a substitute for checking all three bureau files. Read the current privacy statement before enrolling to understand what data is collected and how it may be used. Credit Karma says it does not sell personal information or share it with unaffiliated third parties for their own advertising or marketing, while its terms overview notes exceptions such as legal requirements and agents acting on its behalf (Credit Karma privacy statement).
Is Credit Karma accurate?
Credit Karma says the scores it displays are VantageScore 3.0 scores based on Equifax and TransUnion data. They are not FICO scores. A score can differ from one shown by a lender or another service without either number necessarily being an error: the score model and version, bureau file, and date of the underlying information can differ. A lender may also consider other details in an application.

Use the score as a way to follow movement in the particular bureau and model shown, rather than assuming it is the exact score a lender will pull. Credit Karma says checking your scores there does not affect your credit. Its Approval Odds estimate approval likelihood based on comparisons or lender criteria; it is not a guarantee. How useful is Credit Karma’s credit monitoring?
Credit Karma says it monitors Equifax and TransUnion reports and can alert you to significant changes, such as a new account or hard inquiry. Those alerts can help you notice certain activity, but monitoring is not comprehensive identity-theft protection. Credit Karma explicitly says monitoring may miss other kinds of fraud, including someone using a stolen Social Security number to file a tax return and claim a refund (Credit Karma identity monitoring).

The described monitoring does not cover Experian. Credit Karma also says its tool can show the status of locks or freezes at Equifax and TransUnion, but Experian status must be checked with Experian. A freeze is always free to place and maintain, according to Credit Karma; use the bureau directly to place or manage one. Credit Karma distinguishes a lock from a freeze in its support guidance.
Can Credit Karma help fix credit report errors?
Credit Karma’s Direct Dispute tool can submit disputes for errors on TransUnion reports. For errors on an Equifax report, its instructions direct users to Equifax. A dispute submitted through Credit Karma should not be assumed to correct information held by every bureau; check each relevant report and follow the instructions for that bureau (Credit Karma Dispute Center).

Credit Karma’s report page, updated July 14, 2026, says “Over $10.2 billion in mistaken debts have been removed through our Dispute Center.” The page does not state the period covered or how the figure was calculated. It is a company-reported aggregate, not an independently verified result or a prediction of what will happen in an individual dispute.

Credit Karma says it uses 128-bit or higher encryption for data in transit and encrypts data at rest. It also describes a dedicated security team, outside security assessments, a bug-bounty program, and reviews of systems for ISO 27001 certification and SOC 2 compliance (Credit Karma security page). These are the company’s descriptions; they do not independently establish the implementation, audit findings, or current certification status. No online service can guarantee that risk is eliminated.

Credit Karma needs identifying information to retrieve credit reports. Consider whether the convenience is worth sharing that information, review the current privacy statement and account-security options, and use the bureaus directly for freezes or disputes that fall outside Credit Karma’s tools.
Who should use Credit Karma?
Credit Karma can suit someone who wants free, recurring visibility into two bureau files, a no-cost way to follow VantageScore 3.0 changes, or alerts about certain report activity. It is less suitable as the only source for a complete three-bureau picture, as a source of a lender’s exact FICO score, or as comprehensive identity-theft protection.
