What happened to Jessica Bratich Johnson’s label?
PerthNow reported on March 30, 2019, that Bratich Johnson’s eponymous accessories business was “on the brink of collapse” and that she would not make an autumn-winter collection that year. The paper said she had spent almost eight years trying to establish the business. These were the report’s descriptions at the time; it did not establish what ultimately happened to the label or whether it operates today. What did she mean by “throwaway culture”?
Bratich Johnson argued that shoppers were being pushed toward constant novelty by social media and the expectation of having something new to wear. In the interview, she recalled a time when people saved for a piece they liked and wore it repeatedly. She said the pressure now was to buy something for one outfit and move on. She called that pattern “a throwaway society.”
That was her explanation of the commercial pressure she perceived, not a measured finding that consumer behavior caused the label’s sales decline. The report did not establish that this was the only cause, nor did it assess wider claims about fashion consumption or its environmental effects.

What did the report say about the business?
Products and production
The label sold designer handbags and clutches and also offered handbags for little girls. PerthNow said Bratich Johnson designed the bags herself and had them manufactured in China. The report did not name the factories or independently assess their labor conditions.
Discounting and business costs
PerthNow reported that sale prices had been cut from $79 to as low as $10 in efforts to clear stock. Those are reported 2019 prices, not current offers.

Bratich Johnson also described the costs of running the business. She cited a $3,000 photo shoot and said a publicist could cost about $3,000 a month. These were her examples in the interview, not audited accounts or independently verified cost figures.

Bratich Johnson said she was re-evaluating her business plan. She also described family health and caregiving demands as contributing to her exhaustion. PerthNow did not report a final decision about the label, and its 2019 account cannot establish the business’s present-day operation, stock, or prices.
