Foundry completed its acquisition of Seattle-based AI startup Griptape on February 18, 2026; the companies did not disclose the deal’s financial terms. The move brought Griptape’s AI-workflow technology into Foundry’s creative-software business. On July 15, Foundry launched Griptape Enterprise and named Griptape co-founder Kyle Roche its chief AI officer, showing how the acquisition is being developed beyond the original transaction.
What happened in the Foundry–Griptape deal?
Foundry, a London-headquartered creative-software company serving media and entertainment, completed its acquisition of Griptape, a Seattle startup founded in 2023. Foundry described a completed acquisition, not a partnership, but did not disclose the transaction structure, purchase price or other financial terms. Foundry’s acquisition announcement confirms the completion date and strategic rationale; GeekWire’s report says the terms were not disclosed.
Griptape was founded by former Amazon Web Services executives. GeekWire reported that Roche had spent more than eight years at AWS and previously founded 2lemetry, which Amazon acquired in 2015. GeekWire also reported that Griptape had raised a $12.5 million round in 2023, with investors including Fuse, Acequia Capital, Crosslink Capital, Range Ventures and Peterson Ventures. Its report said 13 employees would join Foundry at the time of the acquisition; that is a contemporaneous headcount, not a current staffing figure.
What Griptape built
Griptape was designed to coordinate AI models, agents and other steps in a workflow, rather than serve as a single image generator or chatbot. Its product family had three parts:

In a visual-effects workflow, orchestration could mean connecting a model call to scripts, human review, image processing, metadata capture and application-specific operations. A studio might, for example, test a generated image, send an approved result through an enhancement or color-management step, and record the model and workflow version used. Those are examples of what an orchestrated workflow can involve, not a claim that Foundry has promised each as a particular automated feature.
Foundry says Griptape can work with text, image, video, 3D and audio models, including open-source and proprietary options. It names integrations with Nuke, Maya, Blender and Flow Production Tracking. The company’s Griptape product page describes these capabilities; the list should not be read as a guarantee of integration with every creative application or studio system.
Why Foundry bought Griptape
Foundry already had AI and machine-learning capabilities, including CopyCat, introduced in 2021. Griptape’s strategic value, as implied by the companies’ stated product direction, is less about adding another standalone generator and more about connecting AI tools to professional production pipelines.
Foundry supplies established creative applications and relationships with studios; Griptape adds tools for coordinating models and workflow steps. For production teams, the appeal is the possibility of applying permissions, repeatability, provenance and deployment controls around AI use, while fitting work into systems they already operate. Foundry has described connecting Griptape with Nuke and other studio tools and workflows. That rationale does not establish that the acquisition has produced a particular amount of revenue, customer adoption or productivity improvement.

Orchestration is intended to address that surrounding process.

What changed after the acquisition
On July 15, 2026, Foundry announced Griptape Enterprise and appointed Roche as Foundry’s chief AI officer. The launch made Griptape part of Foundry’s broader AI infrastructure strategy for professional media production, rather than leaving it simply as an independent developer platform. Foundry’s Enterprise announcement describes the new role and product direction.
Foundry positions Enterprise for studios that need greater control over deployment and production use. Its published capabilities emphasize:
- On-premises or private-cloud operation;
- centralized permissions, licensing and curated model access;
- project management, provenance and metadata tracking;
- versioned show and shot workflows and integration with Nuke;
- local execution of some diffusion models on studio GPUs; and
- premium support and onboarding.
These are capabilities described by Foundry, not independent performance measurements. Enterprise pricing is custom. Foundry’s product page lists Griptape Professional at $400 per user per year for up to three users, including $40 per month in model credits per user, with the option to bring third-party API keys. The same page describes a free, single-user plan for testing and non-commercial use, with model credit available pay-as-you-go. Plan terms and prices can change; see Foundry’s current product page for its published details.

What the acquisition means for customers and developers
Foundry customers and studios
The acquisition creates a path for more AI workflow capabilities to connect with Foundry’s creative-software ecosystem. Studios that need controlled deployments may find the emphasis on private infrastructure, permissions and provenance relevant. Whether that translates into simpler or more efficient production for a particular studio will depend on its pipeline, staffing, models and integration requirements; Foundry has not published independent productivity or adoption figures.

Artists and technical directors
Nodes offers a visual way to assemble workflows, while Framework gives developers a Python-based route to building applications and agents. The product’s potential fit is strongest when a team needs to connect AI steps to a wider production process, rather than only make an isolated image-generation graph.
IT, security and pipeline teams
Private-cloud and on-premises options may help studios keep workflows within environments they control, but they do not remove the need to assess each model and workflow. Local execution can require adequate GPU capacity, infrastructure and technical support. Teams also need to test versioning, failure recovery and render-farm behavior instead of assuming that a node graph is production-ready as soon as it runs once.
Open-source developers and existing Griptape users
Foundry said the Griptape Framework and Engine would remain available under the Apache 2.0 license and that it was committed to the developer community. It also said it would continue assessing how open-source access should coexist with specialized commercial features. That leaves the future boundary between community software and paid capabilities open to evolution; it is not a promise that the project’s roadmap or governance will remain unchanged.
Risks and limits studios should weigh
- Model licensing and compliance: Foundry says customers must assess the safety, compliance and licensing of individual models and their training data. A model-agnostic platform does not make every model legally cleared for commercial production. See Foundry’s product information.
- Operational effort: On-premises control can bring infrastructure, GPU, security and maintenance responsibilities. A studio also needs people who can evaluate models, manage permissions and connect the platform to its pipeline.
- Usage costs: The Professional plan’s model credits do not necessarily cover a team’s full usage. Enterprise pricing is custom, and model-provider costs may be separate.
- Vendor dependence: A studio adopting Foundry applications and Griptape together may rely more heavily on one vendor’s product direction and integrations.
- Unproven outcomes: Foundry has described its strategy and product capabilities, but the public announcements do not establish customer adoption levels, revenue contribution or measured productivity gains.
Foundry presents its AI strategy as supporting artists and production workflows, not replacing artists. The acquisition alone is not evidence that creative jobs will be replaced or that AI will deliver a specific result in a studio’s pipeline. More on Foundry’s stated positioning appears on its AI solutions page.

The acquisition’s clearest significance is strategic: Foundry is adding orchestration and governance capabilities to its creative-software business, and its July Enterprise launch indicates a commercial focus on controlled, repeatable AI workflows for professional media production. It is one company’s product and investment decision, not proof that AI orchestration has reached a particular level of industry adoption.
For Seattle’s startup ecosystem, Griptape is another example of a locally founded technology company being acquired by a larger software business. The transaction’s price and financial return to investors remain unknown, so its funding history should not be mistaken for evidence of the deal’s valuation or financial outcome.
Foundry’s current corporate profile describes the company as London-based and says it has more than 275 people worldwide; that is Foundry’s own current description, not a deal-time employee count. See Foundry’s About page.
