Those are planning ranges, not nationwide price limits. The final bill depends on the tow company, location, vehicle, time of day, equipment and whether the vehicle needs recovery rather than a straightforward hookup.
A short breakdown tow may cost about $100, but an accident recovery, police impound or long-distance move can cost several hundred dollars or more. Before authorizing service, get the total estimated price and ask about storage, mileage and extra labor.
Typical car-towing costs
| Tow distance | Typical reported price |
|---|---|
| 5 miles or less | $35–$125 |
| Up to 40 miles | $125–$275 |
| Up to 100 miles | $600 or more |
These ranges, reported by Allstate citing J.D. Power, are useful for budgeting but are not guaranteed quotes. Sherpa Auto Transport’s 2026 industry estimate puts the basic pricing model at approximately $35–$100 for the base or hookup fee, plus $2.50–$7 per mile. Some companies quote a minimum service charge instead of separating every component.
You may also see articles describe a “$109 average tow.” That number is a frequently repeated J.D. Power benchmark, but its survey date, methodology and definition of average are not clear enough to make it a dependable 2026 quote. It may be reasonable for a simple local tow; it is not a sensible estimate for every towing situation.

What a tow-truck bill can include
Ask for an itemized estimate. A bill may contain several charges rather than one flat price:
- Hookup, dispatch or minimum-service fee
- Mileage, which may be calculated using a company-specific definition
- Winching or recovery labor
- Flatbed, dollies or other special equipment
- Night, weekend, holiday or severe-weather surcharge
- Accident-scene cleanup or additional labor
- Impound-yard storage
- Gate, release, administrative or lien fees
- Taxes
Do not focus only on the advertised per-mile rate. For example, a $3-per-mile quote may still carry a $75 hookup fee, making a 10-mile tow approximately $105 before other charges. Confirm whether mileage means the distance from the tow yard to your vehicle, the loaded distance to the destination, or another calculation.
Why towing costs more in some situations
Vehicle size and condition
A standard car with accessible wheels is usually the simplest vehicle to load. A large SUV, truck or other heavy vehicle may need more capable equipment. A car with locked wheels, missing wheels, serious collision damage or drivetrain problems may require dollies, a flatbed or extra labor.
Electric vehicles can have manufacturer-specific loading and towing requirements. A flatbed may be necessary depending on the vehicle and situation, so check the owner’s manual or ask the roadside provider before accepting a tow method.

Where the vehicle is located
A roadside pickup on level pavement is different from recovering a vehicle from a ditch, mud, snowbank, steep slope, restricted-access garage or accident scene. Recovery can require winching, additional personnel and specialized equipment. Those charges can exceed the cost of the actual transport.

When you need service
Nighttime, weekends, holidays and severe weather can affect both availability and price. Some operators apply an after-hours surcharge; others simply quote a higher rate when demand is high. Ask whether the estimate includes any time-based fee.
How far the car must go
Local breakdown towing and long-distance vehicle transport are priced differently. Forbes Home reports long-distance towing at approximately $2–$4 per mile, with loading and other charges potentially added. For a trip of several hundred miles, compare the tow quote with a vehicle-shipping quote. A car transporter may be cheaper than keeping a tow truck assigned to the vehicle for the entire journey.
Accident towing and police impounds
A voluntary roadside tow is not the same as a police-directed, accident-related or private-property impound. Local governments may set maximum towing, mileage and storage charges, but the rules differ substantially by state and municipality.

For example, Palm Beach County’s posted schedule lists private-property impound towing at $146–$151, outdoor storage at $30–$31 per day after the first six hours, and police-directed Class A towing at $182–$188 plus $7.50 per mile. Those figures are local maximums, not national prices.
Storage is often what makes an impound bill grow quickly. A vehicle that remains at a yard for several days can accumulate daily storage, gate, release and administrative charges. The National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends confirming the destination and daily storage fee and warns consumers not to sign blank authorization forms.

Can roadside assistance make towing free?
Roadside assistance can cover some or all of a tow, but only within the plan’s mileage, call and eligibility limits. The word “free” generally means the service is included in a membership or policy you already pay for; mileage beyond the limit may still be billed.
AAA
AAA benefits vary by regional club, but current examples include:
| Plan | Example towing benefit |
|---|---|
| AAA Classic | Generally up to 7 miles, or unlimited miles back to the service facility providing the service |
| AAA Plus | Up to 100 miles |
| AAA Premier | One tow up to 200 miles per membership year; remaining eligible tows up to 100 miles |
AAA generally limits members to four service calls per membership year. Some clubs also impose a waiting period before expanded benefits begin. Check your regional club’s terms rather than assuming every AAA membership has the same coverage.
Other roadside plans
Allstate’s membership examples provide 15 miles with Roadside Assist, 25 miles with Roadside Advantage and up to 100 miles with Roadside Elite. Listed first-year prices are $75, $99 and $150, respectively; renewal prices and terms may differ.
Coverage may also come from an auto policy’s roadside-assistance endorsement, a manufacturer warranty, or a credit card. A standard auto policy does not automatically pay for every breakdown tow. Review the policy, warranty or card agreement for mileage limits, reimbursement rules, provider requirements and covered incidents.

How to get a fair towing quote
- Call your roadside plan first. Ask whether it covers the incident and how many miles are included.
- Describe the vehicle accurately. Mention its size, drive system, locked or damaged wheels, collision damage and exact location.
- Request the total estimated price. A per-mile rate alone is not enough.
- Ask what triggers extra charges. Confirm hookup, winching, flatbed, after-hours, accident-recovery and equipment fees.
- Confirm the destination. Make sure the driver is taking the car to the repair shop or facility you selected.
- Ask about storage before the vehicle is moved. Get the daily rate and any gate, release or administrative fees in writing.
- Verify the operator. At an accident scene, confirm the company’s identity and authorization before handing over the vehicle.
- Keep the itemized receipt. You may need it for an insurance claim or reimbursement request.
Do not sign a blank form or allow an unsolicited tow operator to take your vehicle without confirming the price and destination. If police ordered the tow, contact the agency or impound yard for the release procedure and the local fee schedule.

FAQ
How much does it cost to tow a car 5 miles?
A normal tow of 5 miles or less commonly costs about $35–$125. The price may include a hookup or minimum-service fee, and winching, after-hours service or special equipment can increase it.
Does car insurance cover towing?
Only if your policy includes roadside assistance or towing-and-labor coverage, unless another benefit applies. Coverage may have mileage, dollar, provider or incident limits, so check the policy before assuming a tow will be reimbursed.
How much does a tow cost after an accident?
There is no single national price. Accident towing may involve recovery labor, cleanup, special equipment, mileage and storage. Police-directed and private-property tows may also be subject to local maximums and release fees.
Is towing included with AAA?
AAA usually includes towing within a plan-specific mileage limit. Examples include about 7 miles for Classic, 100 miles for Plus and one 200-mile tow per membership year for Premier, but regional club terms, call limits and waiting periods apply.
The Bottom Line
Budget $35–$125 for a very short tow, $125–$275 for a tow of up to 40 miles and $600 or more for up to 100 miles. Treat those as starting ranges, not guaranteed prices. The most important questions are the total cost, mileage calculation, extra-equipment charges, destination and storage rate. Accident, impound, recovery and long-distance towing can be much more expensive than a routine breakdown tow.
