Yes. Daniel Costello moved from Microsoft to Google in September 2010, joining Google’s data-center or infrastructure organization. The hire was reported on September 7 by Data Center Knowledge and covered again on September 9 by Data Center Dynamics. The move mattered because Costello had worked on Microsoft’s modular, factory-assembled data-center systems—not because the reporting showed Google adopting Microsoft’s designs.
Who was Daniel Costello at Microsoft?
Before joining Google, Costello was director of Data Center Services within Microsoft Global Foundation Services. He had held the Microsoft role for about three years, according to Data Center Knowledge’s contemporaneous report. Earlier in his career, he worked in Intel’s global facility-services data-center engineering organization, as reported by Data Center Dynamics.
That combination of experience—facilities engineering at Intel followed by data-center services leadership at Microsoft—was directly relevant to companies building infrastructure at cloud scale. These operations require coordination among buildings, power and cooling systems, server hardware, and software deployment.
What work was he associated with at Microsoft?
The contemporaneous accounts connect Costello’s work to research and engineering, standards and technologies, and Microsoft’s data-center technology roadmap. They also describe automation and integration spanning hardware, operating systems, and applications.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
A notable part of that work was Microsoft’s use of modular and prefabricated construction, including shipping-container-based designs and factory-built components. The idea was to assemble more of the infrastructure in a controlled factory setting, then integrate it at the data-center site. Compared with constructing and coordinating every element on-site, that approach could support more repeatable deployments and reduce some on-site work. Those are the goals of the approach, not measured results established by the hiring reports.
What did PAC and ITPAC mean?
In the Data Center Knowledge account, PAC means “pre-assembled component.” Data Center Dynamics used ITPAC, expanding it as “IT pre-assembled component.” In the Microsoft context described in 2010, these terms referred to factory-assembled portions of data-center infrastructure intended to be installed and integrated on site.

The reports describe Microsoft’s terminology and implementation at that time. They do not establish PAC or ITPAC as universal industry standards or as current Google product names.
Why was the Microsoft-to-Google move notable?
The news was a personnel move, but it highlighted the value of specialized data-center expertise. Modular construction was one part of a broader engineering challenge: making facilities and IT systems work together so large infrastructure deployments could be standardized and repeated. Costello’s documented responsibilities put him in that field.
Google’s stated reason for welcoming him was his “great track record” at Microsoft and Intel, as reported by Data Center Knowledge. That supports the conclusion that his experience was valuable to Google; it does not establish that Google hired him to reproduce a particular Microsoft design.
What did Google confirm—and what remains unknown?
The reports say Costello joined Google’s data-center or infrastructure organization. They do not establish a more specific Google title, his reporting line, compensation, exact start date, or the projects he worked on after joining.

- They establish a 2010 move, not Costello’s current employer or role.
Who filled Costello’s Microsoft position?
A January 28, 2011 post by the Green Data Center Blog reported that Christian Belady moved into Costello’s former position. This is a secondary account, rather than an official Microsoft succession announcement.
