Eaton announced on August 4, 2010, that it had agreed to acquire Wright Line Holding, a Worcester, Massachusetts, maker of data-center enclosures, rack systems and airflow-management products. Eaton later reported August 25, 2010, as the transaction date. The deal brought physical rack and thermal-management products alongside Eaton’s existing uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and electrical-distribution equipment.

What happened in the Wright Line acquisition?

Eaton announced the agreement on August 4, 2010; that was the public announcement date, not the transaction date in Eaton’s later reporting. Eaton identified August 25, 2010, as the acquisition date in its financial materials. The contemporary report described an agreement, while Eaton’s filings subsequently recorded the transaction.

What did Wright Line make?

Wright Line supplied customized data-center enclosures, server and equipment racks, and airflow-management systems. These products housed and organized mission-critical IT equipment while addressing how heat moved through server cabinets and the surrounding room. That made Wright Line more than a cabinet maker: its equipment connected the physical rack layer to data-center cooling and power-efficiency concerns. Eaton’s 2010 annual report lists customized enclosures, rack systems and airflow-management systems among the company’s offerings.

Why was the deal important to Eaton?

Eaton already sold UPS systems and electrical-distribution equipment. Wright Line added the enclosure, rack and airflow-management layer, allowing Eaton to offer a broader set of products for data-center infrastructure. Eaton’s stated rationale was that combining the portfolios could help CIOs and IT managers address energy efficiency, thermal management and capital deployment. That was the company’s strategic case for the acquisition, not evidence by itself of quantified savings or financial results.

  • Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
  • Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
  • Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
  • Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
  • PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant

The timing also reflected a wider industry shift. As data centers became more power- and cooling-intensive and rack density increased, operators had reason to manage hot exhaust air as well as supply power reliably. Vendors were extending their offerings across power, cooling, racks, monitoring and facility infrastructure. Eaton’s purchase was one example of that convergence; it should be understood in its 2010 market context, rather than as a response to today’s data-center conditions.

How Wright Line’s heat containment worked

Wright Line’s heat-containment approach was designed to capture hot exhaust from server cabinets and direct it toward a ceiling plenum or hot-air return system. In simplified terms:

  • 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
  1. Servers draw in cooler air and release heated exhaust.
  2. A containment structure captures the exhaust near the rack rather than letting it mix freely with cooler supply air.
  3. The system guides that hot air toward a ceiling plenum or return-air path.

Separating hot exhaust from cooler intake air can support more orderly thermal management. The available account describes the intended airflow function, but does not establish a universal energy-saving percentage or prove a specific result across facilities. The acquisition report describes the exhaust-air routing.

What the price and sales figures do—and do not—show

The approximately $101 million figure refers to Wright Line’s sales, not the amount Eaton paid. The contemporary article called it trailing-12-month sales; Eaton’s filing gives the measurement period as the year ended June 30, 2010. The two descriptions are consistent in broad terms, but the filing’s stated period is the more precise one.

Eaton did not disclose an individual Wright Line purchase price in the contemporary report. Its 2010 Form 10-K later reported $222 million in combined net cash purchase prices for multiple acquisitions. That aggregate figure is not Wright Line’s price and cannot be used to calculate one. In 2021, Eaton said its Wright Line and B-Line CommData business units were being merged internally. That points to Wright Line becoming part of Eaton’s broader data-center and channel portfolio rather than remaining an independent company. The available information does not establish whether every original Wright Line product is still available or sold under the same name. Eaton’s 2021 discussion
