The company initially disclosed unauthorized access and temporary production stoppages; in a June 20 amended SEC filing, it said its investigation had found data was exfiltrated. Nucor later reported that it had restored affected operations. The public disclosures do not provide a complete list of the information involved or the number of people affected.
What happened at Nucor?
Nucor identified a cybersecurity incident around May 13, 2025. Its May 14 filing told investors that an unauthorized third party had accessed certain information-technology systems and that some production operations were temporarily halted as a precaution. On June 20, Nucor amended its filing and confirmed that the investigation had found limited data was exfiltrated. The amended filing is the key confirmation: the company moved from reporting unauthorized access to reporting that some data had been taken from its environment. Nucor’s June 20, 2025 Form 8-K/A
“Exfiltrated” means data was transferred or removed without authorization. It does not establish that the data was later published, sold, misused or encrypted. The SEC filings reviewed do not identify the attacker, malware, an extortion demand or a ransom payment, so the incident should not be described more specifically as ransomware on this evidence.

What information was taken?
The settlement notice says the data accessed and acquired likely included personal information. The public materials cited here do not provide a complete inventory of affected fields, a total volume of data or a count of affected individuals. Do not assume that every person had the same information involved—or that any particular category, such as Social Security numbers, account details, medical information or passwords, was exposed. A person’s own Nucor notice is the most relevant source for what information may have concerned them.
There is an important difference between access to systems and confirmed removal of data. Nucor’s initial filing disclosed access while the investigation was underway; its amended filing confirmed limited exfiltration. The later review and individual notifications addressed whether personal information was involved and who might need to be contacted.

Did the cyberattack disrupt steel production?
Yes, temporarily. Nucor said it proactively halted certain production operations at various locations while responding to the incident. The filings describe temporary effects on some applications supporting operations at certain facilities, not a prolonged company-wide shutdown. Nucor later said affected production operations and necessary applications had been restored.
In the June 20 amended filing, Nucor said the incident had not materially affected—and was not reasonably likely to materially affect—its business operations or financial condition. The filings do not quantify lost production, revenue or recovery costs.

How did Nucor respond?
Nucor reported that it activated its incident-response plan, took potentially affected systems offline, worked to contain and remediate the incident, restored affected data from backups, engaged external cybersecurity experts, notified federal law-enforcement authorities and reinforced IT systems. These are measures described by Nucor in its amended SEC filing, rather than an independent audit of the response. June 20 Form 8-K/A
What should someone who received a Nucor notice do?
- Read the notice you received to see what information it says may have been involved and what assistance it offered. The settlement notice says Nucor began written notifications around June 24, 2025.
- Use contact details from your notice or the official settlement site; be cautious of unexpected calls, emails or texts claiming to arrange a Nucor settlement payment.
- Nucor’s settlement notice described a two-year Equifax Complete Premier credit-monitoring subscription at no cost for potentially affected individuals. Eligibility and enrollment details should be checked in the notice or on the official Nucor Data Settlement site.
- Review credit reports and account activity, and keep records of any expenses or identity-theft losses. The official AnnualCreditReport.com service provides access to credit reports; the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov offers recovery guidance if you suspect misuse.
What is the status of the Nucor data settlement?
The settlement site identifies the case as Sweat v. Nucor Corporation, Case No. 3:25-cv-00478, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. It describes a class-action settlement that received preliminary approval. Published terms include reimbursement for certain documented, unreimbursed out-of-pocket expenses, possible reimbursement for extraordinary expenses tied to identity theft with supporting proof, compensation for certain lost time, and a possible 24-month credit-monitoring benefit for eligible people who had not previously enrolled.

The published deadline to submit a valid claim was June 9, 2026, which has passed. The settlement site also listed a final-approval hearing for July 6, 2026. The materials cited here do not establish whether final approval has since been granted or whether distribution has begun. For any updated status or instructions about late claims, appeals or payments, check the official settlement site. A settlement resolves claims; it is not by itself a court finding that Nucor was liable. The settlement site reports that Nucor denied wrongdoing and liability.

No. Nucor’s 2023 incident was separate. The separate settlement materials for Burleson v. Nucor Corporation describe unauthorized acquisition of files after a vulnerability in third-party file-transfer software. That matter has its own case and settlement site: the 2023 Nucor Data Settlement. Do not confuse its facts or deadlines with the 2025 incident and the Sweat settlement.
