Yes, at participating U.S. Coinstar kiosks—but not at every machine. Coinstar announced a Coinme-powered Bitcoin purchase option on January 17, 2019. The service and its fees have changed since launch, so check the live location listing and the full on-screen quote before traveling or paying.
What Coinstar announced in 2019
Coinstar’s January 17, 2019 announcement introduced Bitcoin purchases at select U.S. kiosks through a partnership with Coinme. At launch, the company described a four-step process: choose “Buy Bitcoin,” enter a phone number, insert U.S. paper money, then take a voucher and redeem it through Coinme. The release said the purchase could be up to $2,500 and that coins could not be used to buy Bitcoin. Those are launch-era instructions and a launch-era limit, not reliable guidance for a purchase today. Coinstar’s original announcement
Coinstar’s company-wide network figure at launch was more than 20,000 kiosks in nine countries; that did not mean all, or even most, of those kiosks sold Bitcoin. A later 2019 expansion announcement reported more than 2,200 Bitcoin-enabled locations in 21 states and the District of Columbia, a historical snapshot rather than a current coverage map. How to check availability and buy now
Availability depends on the location and the service arrangement it supports. Coinme’s Help Center guide, dated February 2, 2026, says buyers need an approved Coinme account and a mobile device. The guide reports more than 4,000 U.S. locations, but that is Coinme’s reported count, not an independently audited or permanent total. Use Coinme’s live locator and check the location details before making a trip. Coinme location locator
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Check the location. Use Coinme’s locator filters for service and cryptocurrency, then review the specific location’s details. A nearby Coinstar kiosk is not necessarily enabled for crypto purchases. Coinme’s location-search guidance
- Set up the required account and phone access. Coinme’s current guide calls for an approved Coinme account and mobile device. Follow the provider’s current account instructions before going to the kiosk. Coinme’s Coinstar purchase guide
- Follow the kiosk’s available flow. Coinme describes selecting “Bitcoin & Crypto,” choosing Coinme, selecting an available asset, and completing the purchase so the crypto is credited to a Coinme wallet. Coinstar’s FAQ also describes CINQ by Coinstar, powered by Zero Hash, as well as Coinme wallet arrangements; screens, providers, and availability may differ by kiosk. Coinstar FAQ
- Review the final quote before confirming. Check the cash amount, fees, and crypto amount displayed for your transaction. Proceed only if the stated terms work for you.
Fees: check the quote, not a headline rate
The official pages present fees in different ways, so there is no single universal rate to assume. Coinstar’s FAQ describes a generally applicable 4% transaction fee plus a provider spread, listing spreads up to 18.5% for Coinme and up to 16.1% for Zero Hash. It says charges vary by location, cash amount, asset, and applicable state law, and that the amount received after fees is displayed for confirmation. Coinstar FAQ
Coinme’s pricing page, dated March 24, 2026, instead lists a 13.04–22.5% cash exchange fee for Coinstar kiosk purchases, varying by location. That aggregate range does not transparently match Coinstar’s separate transaction-fee-and-spread presentation. Do not add the figures together or treat one as a guaranteed price; inspect the complete quote at the kiosk before agreeing. Coinme fee information

Coinstar says the kiosk locks the conversion amount for the transaction even if the market price moves before it is completed. That lock applies to the transaction quote; it does not protect the Bitcoin’s market value after purchase, which can rise or fall. Coinstar FAQ

What to keep in mind before using a kiosk
- Bring cash, not coins. Coinstar’s 2019 launch announcement specified U.S. paper money and said coins could not be used for the Bitcoin purchase. Confirm the current kiosk’s accepted payment method and terms rather than assuming the launch details remain unchanged. Coinstar’s original announcement
- Do not rely on the old voucher process or $2,500 limit. Both details came from Coinstar’s 2019 launch description; current Coinme guidance describes an account-based purchase credited to a Coinme wallet.
- Compare the complete amount you pay with the crypto you receive. Provider, spread, location, amount, asset, and state rules can affect the transaction. If the quote is unclear or unexpectedly costly, do not confirm.
- Use the specific kiosk’s terms. Coinstar’s FAQ identifies more than one provider arrangement, and the reviewed official guidance does not establish that every option is available at every kiosk.
