OpenAI was reported in March 2026 to be negotiating a large future electricity purchase from Helion Energy, the fusion startup backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The reported figures—5 gigawatts by 2030 and 50 gigawatts by 2035—are negotiation terms, not power Helion is already producing or a publicly verified, signed contract. The proposal also raises questions about how OpenAI would manage Altman’s financial interest in Helion.

What was reported—and what is confirmed?

Axios reported on March 23, 2026, that OpenAI was in advanced talks to buy electricity from Helion, with an initial allocation described as 12.5% of Helion’s production. The reported targets were equivalent to about 5 gigawatts by 2030 and 50 gigawatts by 2035. Those figures were attributed to a person familiar with the situation, and the discussions were said to depend in part on selecting a site for power production. Axios’s report did not establish a final price, binding delivery obligations or a completed agreement.

TechCrunch reported that Helion had not announced a new customer deal with OpenAI beyond its existing arrangements with Microsoft and Nucor. Helion confirmed that Altman was leaving its board to enable future cooperation between Helion and OpenAI, but did not publicly confirm an OpenAI power contract. TechCrunch’s account described the discussions as early-stage. As of August 18, 2026, the available reporting does not verify a finalized, publicly announced OpenAI-Helion power-purchase agreement.

How large are the reported power targets?

A gigawatt is 1,000 megawatts, so the Axios figures translate to 5,000 MW and 50,000 MW. These would be extraordinary quantities for a company whose disclosed customer arrangement with Helion is much smaller:

Arrangement or target Reported capacity What the figure means
Microsoft agreement with Helion About 50 MW Helion’s announced agreement calls for power from its first plant, targeted to begin delivery in 2028; it is a future target, not current commercial output. Helion’s newsroom
OpenAI reported target by 2030 About 5 GW (5,000 MW) Reported negotiation figure; not a confirmed delivery obligation. Axios
OpenAI reported target by 2035 About 50 GW (50,000 MW) Reported negotiation figure; not a confirmed delivery obligation. Axios

Helion has said a reactor is intended to generate 50 MW. A simple division of the reported targets by that company target implies roughly 100 reactors for 5 GW and 1,000 for 50 GW. TechCrunch has also cited different reactor counts—about 800 and 7,200—apparently based on another interpretation of the production ramp or reactor accounting. The discrepancy cannot be resolved from the public figures alone. It illustrates why a contract would need to define whether its gigawatts refer to nameplate capacity, expected delivered output, average power, or rights to a staged future portfolio.

Why would OpenAI pursue fusion electricity?

Training and operating AI systems requires data centers, and those facilities need large, reliable electricity supplies. A long-term power arrangement could help OpenAI plan future infrastructure and reduce exposure to local grid constraints or volatile electricity costs. Fusion is also promoted as a potential source of continuous, low-carbon power.

Those are strategic reasons to explore a future supply; they do not show that fusion is the cheapest or fastest option, or that it can meet near-term demand. OpenAI’s computing infrastructure spans cloud and data-center partners, so a power contract would not by itself mean that OpenAI owns or operates every facility using the electricity. Where the generation occurs, how power is transmitted, and whether the contract conveys physical electricity or energy attributes would all matter.

What Helion is building

Helion is a Washington-based fusion startup developing commercial power systems. Its planned first commercial plant, Orion, is intended to supply electricity under the Microsoft arrangement. Helion’s approach differs from many fusion concepts that use heat from a reaction to make steam and turn a turbine. Instead, the company aims to convert energy directly from changing magnetic fields as its fusion plasma expands. TechCrunch’s coverage describes this direct-electricity approach.

  1. Helion’s system forms fusion fuel into plasma.
  2. Magnetic fields accelerate and compress the plasma to create conditions for fusion.
  3. As the plasma expands, it interacts with magnetic fields.
  4. Helion aims to capture the resulting change in magnetic energy as electricity rather than first converting reaction heat into steam.

This is a technology description and a company objective, not proof of commercial-scale performance. TechCrunch noted that some fusion experts are skeptical of Helion’s approach and that the company publishes less frequently in peer-reviewed journals than many competitors, limiting outside scrutiny of some technical claims.

Has Helion demonstrated commercial fusion power?

The available sources do not confirm that Helion is already delivering commercial fusion electricity. Its first commercial plant remains under development, and the Microsoft delivery target—about 50 MW beginning in 2028—is a future milestone, not evidence that the plant is operating. Axios reported that no private company had achieved the relevant scientific-breakeven milestone at the time of its March 2026 article. Scientific breakeven and commercial electricity are distinct hurdles: even a scientific milestone would not by itself demonstrate dependable grid power, cost-effective operation or repeatable plant construction.

Helion announced a $465 million Series G funding round in June 2026 at a reported $15.5 billion valuation, with proceeds intended to support construction of the Microsoft plant, according to TechCrunch. That funding is relevant to Helion’s construction plans, but it does not establish that OpenAI has signed a deal or that the technology has been commercially proven.

What does Altman’s role mean for governance?

Altman is OpenAI’s CEO and a major Helion investor. He had served as Helion’s board chair. Axios reported that he had a sizable, undisclosed stake and recused himself from discussions about the proposed OpenAI arrangement; Helion confirmed his board departure. Recusal and departure can reduce direct involvement, but neither removes a financial interest or, on its own, demonstrates how OpenAI reviewed the proposal.

A May 8, 2026 letter from the House Oversight Committee requested information about OpenAI’s conflict-of-interest policies and dealings involving companies linked to Altman. The letter cited reporting that Altman had proposed an approximately $500 million OpenAI investment in Helion. That proposal is not established as a completed investment. The committee letter raised questions; it did not find that wrongdoing occurred. The letter makes clear why the transaction’s approval process matters alongside its energy prospects.

For shareholders, employees and other stakeholders to assess the arrangement, the important details would include who negotiated and approved it, what independent review took place, whether Altman was excluded from deliberations and approvals, and how the price compares with other supply options. The public reporting does not answer those questions or establish that the terms were independently benchmarked.

What would determine whether a deal is meaningful?

A headline capacity target is not enough to judge the commercial value or risk of a power agreement. If negotiations produce a formal contract, its terms would need to clarify:

  • Legal status: whether it is binding, a framework, a letter of intent or a preliminary understanding.
  • Capacity and schedule: whether the gigawatts are nameplate capacity, delivered power or an option to purchase future production, and when each stage must come online.
  • Price and remedies: the cost of electricity, performance guarantees, penalties for delays or shortfalls, and whether OpenAI must make deposits, reserve capacity or accept take-or-pay obligations.
  • Site and delivery: where a plant would be built, whether it can connect to the grid, and whether power can physically reach the relevant data centers.
  • Allocation and counterparty risk: how output would be divided among customers, and what happens if Helion’s technology, financing or construction schedule falls short.
  • Environmental accounting: whether OpenAI receives physical electricity or contractual clean-energy attributes, and what emissions accounting applies.
  • Governance: who approved the deal and what independent safeguards addressed Altman’s investment.

What remains unknown

  • Whether OpenAI and Helion signed a power-purchase agreement or remain in discussions.
  • The final price, plant location and binding delivery dates, if any.
  • Whether the reported 5-GW and 50-GW amounts are firm obligations, staged targets or potential access to future production.
  • Whether OpenAI would invest in Helion or provide financing beyond a power purchase.
  • How any electricity would be transmitted to OpenAI’s infrastructure and whether it would be physical supply or contractual credits.
  • What remedies or guarantees would apply if Helion misses technical, construction or delivery milestones.

The reported talks are a striking signal of the electricity ambitions behind AI infrastructure and of Helion’s attempt to turn fusion into a commercial power source. They are not evidence that OpenAI has secured dependable fusion electricity, or that Helion has yet delivered it.
