The round was co-led by Ribbit Capital and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with participation from ONEVC and the founders of Ramp. Tako is building payroll and employee-lifecycle software for Brazilian businesses, where local labor rules and collective agreements make payroll a specialized, recurring task.
What Tako announced in 2024
Founded by Fernando Gadotti, Tako launched its product in 2023 and described it as a platform for employee information, onboarding and payroll. The funding announcement marked the company’s public emergence from stealth; it was not a product launch or a report of a later financing round. TechCrunch’s November 11, 2024 report covered the round and the company’s initial product.
Although Tako is often described as a fintech, its initial offering sits most directly at the intersection of payroll and HR technology. Payroll connects employee records, compensation and payment processes, but the launch announcement focused on workforce software—not consumer banking.
Why Brazilian payroll needs local expertise
Payroll rules are not just a calculation applied uniformly to every employee. Employers must keep up with labor-law changes and account for collective-bargaining agreements that can differ across workforces. Gadotti told TechCrunch that Brazil has roughly 10,000 labor unions and that some union rules may change several times a year; that figure is his characterization, not an independently verified count.

Local payment infrastructure and employment requirements also make a Brazil-specific system different from simply adapting a generic international payroll product. A mistake can affect a worker’s pay, an employer’s filings or benefits, and the company’s labor-law exposure. This creates a demanding product test: software has to handle routine payroll efficiently while making unusual cases visible and reviewable.
What Tako’s product does
At the time of the seed announcement
The launch product brought employee information into one place and aimed to automate onboarding and payroll. Employees could access a dashboard with employment details and an interactive pay stub. Tako initially targeted mid-market, white-collar businesses with about 100 to 500 employees, particularly in professional and financial services. Gadotti said the company planned to focus on that segment before expanding into more complex industries.

How the company describes the platform now
Tako’s current company site positions it more broadly as an AI platform for payroll and People Ops. Its payroll product page describes workflows spanning recruiting, onboarding, employee changes, vacations, terminations and benefits, alongside eSocial integration and support for CLT, PJ and RPA worker workflows. The company also says it can integrate with systems such as SAP, Oracle and TOTVS. These are current company descriptions, not independent assessments of product coverage or performance.
How AI fits—and what it does not prove
In 2024, Tako said it used a large language model to ingest labor-law and union-law information and help developers update the product’s code. Human review remained part of the process. That is an assistive compliance workflow: it may help identify relevant changes and reduce the work of maintaining rules, but it does not establish that a language model independently calculates legally compliant payroll.
Rank #3
The company’s current product page describes a more developed division of responsibilities: AI interprets applicable rules and supports workflows, while deterministic code performs payroll calculations. Tako says results can be traced to legal sources and that the platform includes audit trails and collective-agreement monitoring. These are company claims. They do not by themselves establish independent accuracy, legal compliance or an absence of payroll errors.
The distinction matters because a correct calculation engine can still receive incorrect employee data, rely on a stale source or encounter a disputed interpretation. For a buyer, the useful questions are how changes are approved, how calculations can be audited and corrected, and what happens when a filing or integration fails—not simply whether the vendor uses AI.
Traction disclosed at emergence
Gadotti told TechCrunch that Tako had processed tens of millions of dollars in payroll before its stealth announcement. He did not publicly identify customers. The company’s current about page displays a “R$ bi+” processed-payroll metric, but the accessible page does not provide a full underlying figure or methodology. Treat both as company-reported indicators rather than independently audited operating data.
The public information cited here does not establish Tako’s revenue, customer count, retention, margins or payroll error rate. Payroll volume can indicate that a product is being used, but without customer and operating metrics it is not enough to assess the company’s scale or reliability.

Who invested and how Tako planned to use the capital
The $13.2 million seed was co-led by Ribbit Capital and a16z. ONEVC and Ramp’s founders also participated. Gadotti said most of the funding would support research and development, including a possible doubling or tripling of the R&D team. He also identified benefits and instant payments as potential areas for future expansion. Those were plans described at the time of the 2024 announcement, not a guarantee that every initiative was subsequently launched.
How Tako fits into the competitive landscape
The alternatives are not all interchangeable. TechCrunch identified ADP as an established international payroll provider operating in Brazil, while Gupy and Caju were described in adjacent HR and employee-management areas. For a company evaluating payroll, the practical alternatives may also include local payroll vendors, outsourced payroll bureaus, legacy systems, spreadsheets or a mix of tools.
- Direct payroll overlap: ADP, local payroll providers and payroll bureaus are more directly relevant when the question is whether to replace or outsource payroll processing.
- Adjacent HR and benefits overlap: Gupy and Caju may address parts of recruiting, employee management or benefits, but should not be assumed to be one-for-one payroll replacements.
- Existing internal setup: A legacy system combined with spreadsheets or an outsourced provider can remain a viable option, especially if a company values hands-on service over a consolidated software platform.
Tako’s local specialization is a plausible differentiator, but it is not automatically a durable moat. A buyer would still need to weigh coverage of its employment arrangements, integration needs, migration effort, auditability and support during payroll closing against the cost and risk of switching.
What changed after the seed announcement
The seed round belongs to November 2024. Later company materials show broader positioning and additional fundraising, which should not be folded into the original announcement. Tako’s website says the company has raised more than $31 million, a cumulative company-reported figure. Its LinkedIn profile lists a Series A dated August 30, 2025. A Gunderson Dettmer document refers to an approximately $18 million later raise, but the available materials do not fully establish the round structure; the amount should not be treated as a definitive Series A total.
