John Riccitiello Steps Down as Unity CEO; Jim Whitehurst Takes Over on an Interim Basis

Unity’s October 2023 leadership change came amid backlash over its proposed Runtime Fee. Riccitiello left immediately, Jim Whitehurst served as interim CEO, and Matthew Bromberg later took the permanent role.

John Riccitiello left Unity immediately on October 9, 2023, stepping down as president, CEO, chairman and board member. Former Red Hat CEO and IBM president Jim Whitehurst became Unity’s interim CEO and president, while lead independent director Roelof Botha became chairman. The change came weeks after Unity’s proposed Runtime Fee provoked a sharp developer backlash, but Unity did not say the pricing dispute caused Riccitiello’s departure. Whitehurst was temporary: Matthew Bromberg became CEO and president on May 15, 2024.

What changed at Unity on October 9, 2023?

Unity said Riccitiello would “retire,” effective immediately. He relinquished four roles: president, chief executive officer, chairman and member of the board. Unity said he would continue advising the company to support the transition.

Whitehurst took over as interim CEO and president and joined the board. Botha, previously Unity’s lead independent director, became chairman. The board also began a search for a permanent CEO. These were separate parts of the change: Riccitiello left the board, Whitehurst joined it, and Botha assumed the chairmanship. Unity’s announcement reaffirmed the company’s previously issued third-quarter 2023 guidance and said it planned to report results on November 9. That reaffirmation described Unity’s outlook at that point; it did not establish that the controversy had no longer-term effect on customers or business performance.

Was Riccitiello’s departure caused by the Runtime Fee backlash?

The timing made the controversy central to coverage: Unity announced a proposed Runtime Fee in September 2023, and Riccitiello stepped down weeks later. Contemporary accounts described the proposal and the response from developers as a major backdrop to the leadership change. But Unity’s transition announcement did not attribute his departure to the fee, and the available statements do not establish that he was fired or that the board forced him out. The careful conclusion is that the change happened amid a crisis of confidence over Unity’s pricing strategy, not that the pricing proposal is a confirmed cause. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report covered the transition in that context.

What was the Runtime Fee, and why did developers object?

Unity’s original September proposal tied charges partly to game installations after specified revenue and install thresholds were reached. Unlike a charge based only on revenue or subscription access, an install-based fee could be difficult to forecast: installs do not necessarily generate income, and free-to-play distribution, demos, giveaways, repeat installations and subscription services can complicate the count. Developers also worried about how the change would affect existing projects and games already in production, while unclear details and subsequent revisions added to distrust. Public criticism included developers and studios saying they would consider leaving Unity. Those concerns were not necessarily shared by every Unity customer, but they went beyond the size of a bill: a fee model can influence long-term project budgets, contracts and engine choices.

Unity later revised the proposal after the backlash. The original and revised versions should not be treated as the same policy:

Issue Original proposal Later revision, as reported at the time
How charges were calculated Included fees connected to installs after specified revenue and installation thresholds. Contemporaneous reporting described a choice involving install-based calculation or a revenue-share option, alongside revised thresholds and terms.
Existing projects The proposal raised concerns about how fees could affect existing games and projects already underway. Unity said the revised policy would apply to future eligible releases rather than existing games in the same manner developers had feared under the initial proposal.
Developer response The announcement prompted widespread criticism and some public threats to abandon or reconsider Unity. The revision addressed some concerns, but did not instantly restore trust.

TechCrunch’s report on the revision and Game World Observer’s coverage describe the changing terms and reaction. The distinction matters: saying Unity simply “canceled all fees” would erase the revisions and their conditions.

Who was John Riccitiello, and what was his Unity legacy?

Riccitiello joined Unity’s board in 2013 and became CEO in 2014. Before Unity, he had served as CEO of Electronic Arts in two periods. Unity’s official account of his tenure emphasizes the company’s business growth: moving from perpetual licenses toward subscriptions, expanding services and monetization tools, and completing its public-market transition with an IPO. Unity also credited him with growing the platform for developers and creators.

That corporate account is only one side of the story. Developer-focused coverage emphasized deteriorating trust between Unity and some of the people and studios relying on its tools. The Runtime Fee episode made that tension especially visible: business growth and product expansion did not guarantee that customers would accept a major change to the economics of using the platform. The leadership announcement marked a change in governance, but by itself it did not show whether developers’ concerns had been resolved.

Who was Jim Whitehurst, and why was his role interim?

Whitehurst brought enterprise-software and public-company leadership experience, rather than a career running a game engine or publisher. He was CEO of Red Hat from January 2008 to April 2020, then president of IBM from April 2020 to July 2021; afterward, he served as a senior adviser to IBM. His earlier executive experience included Delta Air Lines. Unity presented him as an experienced executive suited to guide the transition.

That background offered relevant experience in leading a technology company and managing organizational change. It did not automatically answer Unity’s central challenge: repairing confidence among developers whose work and business plans depended on the platform. Whitehurst’s appointment was explicitly temporary while the board searched for a permanent CEO, not a permanent succession announcement.

Who became Unity CEO after Whitehurst?

Unity appointed Matthew Bromberg CEO and president effective May 15, 2024. Whitehurst became executive chair of the board, and Botha returned to the lead independent director role. Bromberg brought games-business experience, including serving as Zynga’s COO and holding leadership roles at Electronic Arts and Major League Gaming. Unity described the appointment as a new phase for the company and emphasized his customer focus. Unity’s succession announcement confirms the date and roles; its leadership profile provides his current biography.

Unity’s later leadership information continues to identify Bromberg as president and CEO and Whitehurst as chairman. That distinction closes the loop on the October 2023 announcement: Whitehurst was the bridge between Riccitiello and Bromberg, not Unity’s permanent successor. Unity’s February 2026 board update reflects that later leadership framing.

What the leadership change meant for Unity and its developers

The departure combined an executive succession with a board transition during a sensitive moment for Unity’s relationship with its customer base. Unity said it would continue product development, work to strengthen relationships with creators, customers and partners, and pursue growth and profitability while searching for a permanent CEO. For developers, the practical stakes were broader than the identity of the CEO: engine decisions can tie a studio to its existing code, assets, plugins, staff skills, build systems and distribution workflows. Changing leadership alone could not settle the questions raised by pricing changes or remove the costs of switching tools.

Unity launched Unity 6 on October 17, 2024, after Bromberg took the helm. The launch is a later product milestone, not evidence by itself that the fee dispute was resolved or that developer confidence had recovered. Unity’s Unity 6 announcement records the release date.
