How Apple Employee Giving works
The program has two main employee-linked components: matching eligible monetary donations and directing a grant to an organization for eligible volunteer time. Employees can donate through Apple’s giving portal or, subject to the program’s rules, submit an outside donation for a match. The public program guide says Benevity administers the program.

These operating details come from the publicly available Apple Matching Gifts Program guide, rather than a public Apple policy page. Employees should confirm current terms, eligible organizations, deadlines, and country-specific rules in Apple’s internal portal or with HR before donating or volunteering.
Who can participate—and what may not qualify
The public guide describes eligibility for employees paid through Apple’s or designated affiliates’ W-2 payroll. It lists interns, flexible-workforce employees, independent contractors, consultants, and temporary-agency workers as ineligible. Apple’s examples include Apple Store employees, but that does not establish eligibility for every worker classification or location.

Eligibility also depends on the organization and activity. Do not assume that every nonprofit, fundraiser, religious activity, school-related payment, or service benefiting an individual qualifies. The guide’s general terms do not replace the eligibility decision for a particular request. For outside donations, retain the receipt and other documentation requested by the portal; for volunteer work, record the organization, service date, and hours.
Apple’s reported scale: figures through 2022
In its December 8, 2022 account, Apple said Employee Giving had raised more than $880 million for nearly 44,000 organizations since the program began. It also reported that more than 76,000 employees had logged over 2.1 million volunteer hours. Apple described the program as having operated for 11 years at that point, which suggests an approximate 2011 start; the 2022 account does not, by that wording alone, establish a precise launch date.

Apple’s prior-year retrospective gives a useful dated comparison, not a current tally: in December 2021, it reported nearly $725 million raised over the preceding decade, more than 68,000 employees logging almost 2 million volunteer hours, and more than $120 million distributed to organizations globally in 2021. The figures are reported by Apple and should not be added together: the later totals include earlier activity.
The latest detailed Apple newsroom overview identified here is from 2022. It does not establish a 2026 cumulative total, a breakdown of employee donations versus Apple’s matching contributions, or participation rates by region. The publicly available guide gives operating signals, but it is not a consolidated impact report.

What Apple’s Global Volunteer Program includes
Apple’s Global Volunteer Program describes organized or facilitated opportunities for employees to serve communities, alongside the hourly grants. Apple’s 2022 feature showed a mix of remote and in-person activity, including reading audiobooks for children at Ronald McDonald House, creating materials for a nonprofit addressing maternal mortality, and designing educational cards about Black professionals for Chicago students.
Other examples in that feature included mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters, supporting affordable-housing projects, hosting young learners at company data centers, and taking part in river cleanups. These are selected examples Apple highlighted, not a promise that the same opportunities are offered in every location or to every employee.

Global initiatives span local needs
Apple’s 2022 account described employee and local-team activity in the United States, Australia, Brazil, China, Singapore, Ukraine, and communities near Apple offices, stores, data centers, and other facilities. The work ranged across several needs:
- Food and basic needs: food-bank and food-distribution efforts, including work addressing food insecurity.
- Education and opportunity: mentoring, youth education, and skills-based service.
- Environment: cleanups and other community environmental work. For the Great Global Cleanup, EARTHDAY.ORG’s Apple employee page describes a US$25-per-hour match and a campaign-specific deadline of up to two months after the service date to log hours.
- Humanitarian response: Apple said in 2022 that it launched a special two-to-one match for employee donations to organizations supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. That was a campaign exception, not the standing 1:1 match described in the public guide.
- Community resilience and justice: local development, housing, crisis support, and programming connected to racial equity and justice.
Apple also cited work with organizations addressing HIV/AIDS, housing, and crisis support. The geographic examples show a broad portfolio of activity, but they do not establish a uniform worldwide benefit or a complete country-by-country availability list.

Employee matching is not the same as Apple grantmaking
Apple’s philanthropy includes channels beyond employee-triggered donations and volunteer grants. Its newsroom coverage separately describes Community Investment, corporate grants, and Strengthen Local Communities grants for nonprofits in communities where Apple employees live and work, as well as strategic initiatives such as the Racial Equity and Justice Initiative.

Apple’s 2021 and 2022 stories name examples of organizations and causes supported through its broader giving, including World Central Kitchen, The King Center, China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, food banks, and the Coalition for the Homeless. Those examples do not establish that each organization received support through the same channel.
Practical steps for employees
- Check your worker classification and location. Confirm eligibility with HR or the internal giving portal before relying on the public guide’s terms.
- Check the organization and activity. Search the portal for the nonprofit and confirm whether the particular donation or service qualifies.
- Choose the donation route. Make a one-time or recurring donation through the portal, or retain proof of an outside donation if requesting a match. The guide says portal donations can use credit card or PayPal; it also describes personal funds and, subject to rules, Apple stock.
- Log volunteer hours promptly. Follow the deadline shown for the activity. The two-month window on EARTHDAY.ORG’s page applies to that Great Global Cleanup campaign; it is not the general 12-month deadline for prior monetary donation matching.
- Submit required documentation and track the request. Keep receipts and service details, then check status and distribution information in the portal. Processing can differ for international organizations.
What nonprofits should know
Employee matching is employee-led: a nonprofit may benefit when an eligible Apple employee donates or volunteers, but that is not the same as an open corporate grant application. Organizations should keep their legal and payment information current, provide clear donation receipts, and verify volunteer dates and hours when asked. They should avoid promising donors that a match is guaranteed; employee eligibility, nonprofit eligibility, annual limits, deadlines, and local rules all matter.
What Apple’s public disclosures do not settle
Apple’s public materials establish a substantial, long-running employee giving effort and offer examples of its reach. They do not provide a current 2026 aggregate impact total, a full global eligibility matrix, or a complete public accounting separating employee contributions, Apple matches, volunteer grants, and corporate grantmaking. Nor do the cited materials show that every country operates under identical terms. Those limits matter when comparing Apple’s headline historical totals with a particular nonprofit’s likely funding or an employee’s expected match.
