23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on March 23, 2025, and CEO Anne Wojcicki resigned that day so she could pursue an independent bid for the company. The filing began a court-supervised sale process, not an immediate shutdown: TTAM Research Institute later acquired 23andMe’s Personal Genome Service and Research Services businesses, completing the purchase on July 14, 2025. The service continued under TTAM, while customers retained options to download their data, withdraw from research, or request account deletion.
What 23andMe filed for—and what Chapter 11 meant
23andMe Holding Co. and subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri on March 23, 2025. The company said the process would allow it to keep operating while seeking a buyer or restructuring outcome under court supervision. It was not an announcement that the consumer service had immediately shut down or that the company was liquidating. The filing notice identifies the court and petitions; a later SEC filing describes the Chapter 11 process.
The distinction matters to customers: a bankruptcy sale can transfer operating assets and businesses without meaning that every legal entity, brand, database, and subsidiary has the same status afterward.
Why 23andMe sought bankruptcy protection
The company faced several pressures at once: demand for ancestry kits had weakened, efforts to build a profitable recurring health-services business had struggled, and the 2023 data breach damaged customer trust. Reporting at the time also described failed or rejected acquisition proposals from Wojcicki and a steep decline in the company’s market value after its 2021 public listing. Contemporaneous reporting covered these business and financial strains.

The breach’s scale—and what the figure does not establish
The official settlement site says the 2023 cyberattack involved personal information concerning approximately 6.4 million U.S. residents. That figure is limited to the settlement’s stated U.S. population; it is not a count of all customers worldwide. The settlement description does not establish that raw genetic-data files for all affected people were publicly exposed, so it would be inaccurate to treat the breach figure as proof of a wholesale release of DNA files. The settlement site provides the affected-person information.
Valuation figures refer to different things
Contemporaneous coverage described 23andMe as having gone public in 2021 at roughly a $3.5 billion valuation and having once been valued at about $6 billion. The same reporting cited approximately $277 million in assets and $215 million in liabilities during the bankruptcy period. These are not interchangeable measures: a market or private-company valuation is different from the assets and liabilities reported in a bankruptcy context, and each figure belongs to its stated period and source. Investing.com’s report gives the contemporaneous figures.

Why Anne Wojcicki resigned as CEO
Wojcicki said she resigned as CEO effective immediately so she could be in the best position to pursue 23andMe as an independent bidder in the bankruptcy sale. She was the company’s co-founder and chief executive; leaving the CEO role separated her executive position from her attempt to buy the business. She remained involved as a board member during the process. Her resignation was therefore tied to the sale, not simply an unrelated departure. Contemporaneous coverage reported her stated rationale and the bidder context.
Joe Selsavage, then the company’s chief financial and accounting officer, became interim CEO, according to the company’s announcement. The announcement describes the leadership change.

How the bankruptcy sale unfolded
The court-supervised process drew a competing bid from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. TTAM Research Institute, a nonprofit public-benefit corporation founded and led by Wojcicki, ultimately submitted the winning offer of approximately $305 million. The court approved the sale in late June 2025, and TTAM completed the acquisition on July 14, 2025. The sale filing describes the winning offer and approval; TTAM’s completion announcement gives the closing date.
TTAM acquired substantially all relevant operating assets and the Personal Genome Service and Research Services businesses. That is more precise than saying it bought the former publicly traded corporate entity in its entirety.

What changed for 23andMe after the sale
23andMe’s customer-facing DNA testing and research services continued under TTAM ownership after the acquisition. The company did not simply disappear when it filed for Chapter 11, though ownership and corporate structure changed. TTAM’s announcement says the businesses continued under its ownership.
For customers, the central question is not whether bankruptcy automatically made genetic data public; it is how data is governed under the sale, applicable privacy commitments, and customer choices. The sale materials said TTAM would honor existing customer-data policies and rights, including account deletion and research opt-out options. The customer-data commitments and sale agreement materials address those obligations.

What customers can do with their data
Customers can keep using the service, change research participation, download account information, or request deletion. The right choice depends on whether they value services such as ancestry reports and DNA Relatives enough to keep an account, and whether they are comfortable with the ongoing storage of sensitive genetic information. 23andMe says raw genetic data is uninterpreted and should not be used for medical or diagnostic purposes; its reports are not a substitute for professional medical advice. The service-options page describes its offerings and limitations.
Download information before making a permanent choice
- Sign in and open Account Settings.
- Review the available downloads for raw genetic data, family-tree information, and other account materials. 23andMe’s account guide describes what is available through Account Settings. Read the account guide.
- Save anything you may want to retain before requesting account deletion, because deletion is irreversible.
Withdraw from research without deleting the account
Research consent can be changed separately from full account deletion. Use the research and product-consent controls in Account Settings to withdraw. 23andMe’s consent instructions explain the process.
Request account deletion
- Open Account Settings and go to the 23andMe Data section.
- Select the permanent-deletion option and follow the confirmation steps.
- Confirm using the email sent to the address associated with the account. Once confirmed, the request cannot be canceled or reversed.
The company says deletion applies to data associated with all profiles in the account. Check the implications before proceeding if you want to preserve information for another profile. Its policy says it deletes the majority of personal information and discards stored saliva samples, subject to stated legal-retention and other requirements; limited information may remain for legal or administrative reasons. Deletion should not be described as instant, absolute erasure of every record. The account-closure instructions set out the steps and limitations.
Understand what deletion cannot undo
Account deletion does not necessarily make data already incorporated into completed, deidentified research recoverable as an individual record. The company’s privacy statement, updated May 19, 2026, explains its current data-handling terms and should be consulted for details relevant to a customer’s account. Read the privacy statement.
